UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
WILLIAM WIMER, OF. UNION CITY, INDIANA.
SASH-BALANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.`261,797, dated July 25, 1882. Application led April 5, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it, known that I, WILLIAM WIMER, aA citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county ol Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Balances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-balances; and it consists in the construction and arrangement ot' its several parts, as will be hereinafter fullyset forth, and pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawing fully illustrates my invention.
The ligure is a front elevation.
A represents a window-frame ot" ordinary construction, in which slides the upper sash, B, and lower sash, C, as shown. To one corner ot' the upper sill of the window-frameAis att-ached the end of the cord a, as shown. Secured centrally to the upper portion of the sash B is a T-shaped hanger, b, the arm b2 ot' which projects downwardly, and hasjournaled in its lower end the pulley b, as shown. The cord a is carried around this pulley, and thence back to the oppositecorner of the upper sill of the frame from that to which its end is attached, and is carried over a pulley, a', as shown. From this pulley the cord is carried downwardly along the frame, and passes through a clamping device, a2, adapted to secure the cord, and thus hold the sash B in any desired position. When it is desired to low'er the sash B the cord a is loosened from the clamping device a2, and the sash descends by virtue of its own weight. To raise the sash the cord a is drawn upon until the sash has reached the desired elevation, when the cord is secured in the clamping device.
The advantage secured by this arrangement of the sash-balance is that additional leverage is secured upon the sash, and that by the use ofthe hanger b', having the depending arm b2, the power beingappli'ed so th at the sash is pushed rather than pulled up, by which au additional eiieet is produced with the same eX- penditure of a pulling-power.
What I claim isrIhe combination, with the window-frame A, having a cord, c, attached in one corner of the upper sill, adapted to pass over the pulley c on the opposite corner of said sill, of the sash B, provided with a T-shaped hanger, b', se-
cured centrally to its upper portion, and having a pulley, b, journaled in the lower end of its depending arnI b2, the said cord a being held by the clamping device a2 after passing around the pulleys b and af, substantially as shown and described. l
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
