HAIR-WAVING DEVICE Filed Jan. 19. 951
Zhwentor 4 BEL/LAH BRANDT (Ittorneg Patented Nov. 11, 1952 UNITED STATES arser OFFICE,
HAIR-WAVING DEVICE Beulah Brandt, Unadilla, Nebr. Application January 19, 1951, Serial No. 206,847
sembled relation in hair whereby the combs may Y been used in hairdressing and whereas devices of this type-are used extensively for holding individual curls or waves it is difficult to hold devices of this type in assembled relation and for this reason it is difiicult to obtain uniform spacing between curls or rolls.
With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a plurality of generally parallel elongated flexible combs carried by covered flexible cross wires and with the cross wires retained in assembled relation by similar end Wires.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for retaining a plurality of combs in assembled relation whereby the combs are set to conform to the shape of rolls or curls of hair to facilitate hairdressing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a flexible framework for holding combs in hairdressing whereby the framework is readily bent to form rolls or curls of different shapes and sizes.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for retaining a plurality of hair retaining devices in an assembled unit so that the same set of devices may be used repeatedly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a permanently assembled group of combs for use in hairdressing that is adapted to be used by either a professional or amateur operator.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an assembled group of combs for waving and curling hair which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a substantially rectangular-shaped frame having end members with side members connecting the ends of the said end members, with intermediate members generally parallel to the side members, and with elongated flexible combs slidably mounted on the said side and intermediate members.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection withthe drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the use of the improved hair waver and curler, showing. the framework holding combs in hair.
Figure 2 is a front elevational View of the device, with parts broken away. 7
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the device as shown in Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved hairdressing device of this invention includes a framework having covered flexible end members i 0 and I2, with the ends of the end members connected by side members H3 and I6, and with intermediate members l8 and 20 carried by the end members and positioned between the side members, and combs 22, 24, 25 and 28 carried by the said side and intermediate members.
The upper ends of the end members In and 12 are twisted to form loops or eyes 39 and 32, from which the side member l4 extends, and the lower ends are provided With loops or eyes'3 i and 36 from which the member I6 extends.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the ends of the intermediate member I3 are wrapped around the end members It and 12 forming coils 38 and 40 and eyes 42 and M, which are positioned in planes perpendicular to the member [8, extend from the coils. The intermediate member 20 is formed to provide similar coils 46 and 48, and eyes 50 and 52 extend from these coils.
Each of the combs is provided with a row of teeth and a back E i and tabs or eyes 56 and 58, which are formed integral with or attached to the backs, extend from the backs and are positioned to receive the comb supporting side and intermediate members, as shown in Figure 2. By this means the combs are slidable longitudinally on the said side and intermediate members, as illustrated by th dotted lines 60 at the lower right hand corner of the framework.
It is preferred to form the combs, side and intermediate members, and also the end members of flexible material, although it will be understood that other suitable material may be used, and it is also preferred to use covered material for the side, intermediate, and end members.
With the parts formed in this manner the combs are inserted in the hair and the side, intermediate, and end members shaped to conform to rolls or curls, as illustrated in Figure 1.
With the parts arranged in this manner the combs are retained in assembled relation and the framework may be shaped, and the combs set therein, each time the device is used whereby the device is adapted for forming rolls and curls of different shapes and sizes. The parts may also be pre-shaped whereby rolls or curls of the same size and shape may be formed repeatedly.
It will be understood that although the framework is illustrated as provided with two intermediate members any suitable number of intermediate members may be provided on the frame, and although the intermediate members are shown as being equally spaced in the frame these members, being slidably mounted on the end members, may be spaced as desired.
With the side and intermediate members offset in relation to the end members as shown in Figure 3, one comb may be positioned at one end of the frame and the combs on both sides extended toward the opposite end of the frame so that the hair may be waved vertically as well as horizontally.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a hair dressing device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and used, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as claimed.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a hair waving device, the combination which comprises a substantially rectangular-shaped frame having spaced parallel flexible end members, the ends of which are rolled forming eyes, spaced parallel flexible comb supporting side members formed integral with said end members and extended from the eyes at the ends thereof, flexible intermediate comb supporting-members parallel to said side members and having loops providing eyes at the ends positioned with said eyes extended around said end members, elongated bars having spaced parallel slots in one of the sides thereof providing teeth and forming combs positioned between said end members and adjacent said side and intermediate members, and tabs having openings therethrough providing eyes extended from the edges of said bars opposite to the sides on which the teeth are positioned and spaced from the ends of the bars, said side and intermediate bars extended through the eyes of the bars providing adjustable supporting means therefor, and whereby the bars forming the combs are longitudinally slidable on the supporting members and the end members are adapted to be bent to conform to curls of hair.
