My invention relates to a self-supporting substantially conically shaped, or more specifically, a self-supporting frustoconically shaped hair foundation for shaping and supporting a substantially conically, or more specifically, a frustoconically shaped hairdo often referred to as the beehive hairdo on the top portion of the human head, said foundation including brush means positioned therewithin and extending therethrough for simultaneously gripping the hair while being formed therearound, for holding the so-formed hair in position thereabout and for reinforcing said foundation, said foundation being a foundation frame for forming said beehive hairdo or coiifure and being retained in said hairdo or coiffure. My invention also relates to the method of styling human hair tresses in a stylish beehive hairdo on the top portion of the head even though said hair tresses are relatively short, said method including the step of forming said hair tresses about said reinforced foundation while simultaneously gripping the hair tresses and holding the so-formed hair tresses or strands about said foundation until said foundation is covered by said hair tresses in the shape of the foundation.

Prior hereto, the woman, who desired to style or dress her hair in such a maner as to attain said beehive hairdo, has found it necessary to obtain and utilize the services of a professional hair stylist, and, even before the professional hair stylist has been able so to style or dress a womans hair in the shape of such beehive hairdo, the hair strands or tresses must, of necessity, have been uniformly relatively long and flowing. With the hair foundation of this invention, the woman herself, without the necessity for the services of a professional hair stylist, can form such beehive hairdo at home even though her hair strands or tresses be relatively short.

The foundation of this invention comprises a conically shaped, and more particularly and preferably a frusto conically shaped, hollow member of relatively stiff, resilient and preferably of thermoplastic organic open mesh material, and brush means positioned within said hollow member and extending through said open mesh material, for at least a portion thereof, for simultaneously gripping the hair while being formed therearound, for holding the so-formed hair in position thereabout and for reinforcing said hollow member. In addition, the foundation when positioned on the top surface portion of the head which is substantially flat, is stationary and does not tip, the center of gravity of said foundation being on its longitudinal axis, which is, of course, the longitudinal axis of said hollow member.

The method of styling the human hair tresses in the stylish beehive hairdo on the top portion of the head comprises positioning on said top portion of the head the self-supporting, so-reinforced, substantially conically shaped, and more particularly and preferably the frustoconically shaped, hair foundation with its longitudinal axis substantially perpendicular to the top portion of the head, attaching the foundation at its bottom portion at the top portion of the head, and forming said hair tresses around said self-supporting, reinforced foundation while simultaneously gripping the hair tresses and holding the soformed hair tresses in position about the foundation until said foundation is covered by said hair tresses in the stylish shape of the beehive hairdo, and, of course, in the substantial shape of the foundation, and securing said so-shaped hair tresses in position about the foundation.

An object of my inventionis to provide a self-supporting, reinforced, hair foundation for simultaneously shaping and supporting a stylish beehive hairdo on the human head and, while shaping said hairdo, gripping said hair tresses and holding the so-formed hair tresses in position thereabout, even though the hair tresses be relatively short and not flowing.

Another object of my invention is to provide a method of styling human hair tresses in a stylish beehive hairdo without the utilization of the services of a professional hair stylist even though the hair tresses being so-styled by the woman herself are relatively short and not flowing.

Other objects and features of my invention will become readily apparent from the following detailed description which is not limiting in any way Whatever but only illustrative of the preferred embodiment of my invention.

FIGURE 4 is a perspective View of the preferred types of brushes in the hair foundation of this invention.

FIGURE 5 is a View in perspective of the hair foundation of FIGURE 1 on the top of the wearers head in the process of styling the hair tresses.

FIGURE 6 is a front view of a woman having the sostyled beehive hairdo obtained using a hair foundation of my invention.

More specifically, the foundation of my invention comprises the self-supporting hollow member 2 of relatively stiff, resilient and somewhat flexible material, preferably a thermoplastic organic material such as is polyethylene, polystyrene, or nylon, among others, having the shape of a frustum of a right circular cone. Said hollow member includes a plurality of intersecting crossed ribs 4 and 6 forming diamond shaped apertures 8, as clearly shown in the appended drawings. At the top portion is circular top ring 16 and at the bottom portion is circular ring 12, said ribs 4 and 6 preferably being integral therewith, as clearly shown in the appended drawings. Said rib members 4 and 6 are preferably rounded at their outer surfaces and preferably flat at their inner surfaces. The center of each of said

14 and 12 is on the longitudinal axis A-A of said hollow member 2, and the center of gravity of hollow member 2 is likewise on said longitudinal axis A-A. Said hair foundation, as is clearly apparent, is symmetrical about its longitudinal axis AA, is stationary when positioned on a substantially flat surface, and will not tip over. Circular top ring 10 is preferably substantially rectangular in cross circular area, and circular secting crossed ribs 4 and 6, as clearly shown in the appended drawings. Each of said circular shaped rigid members 3%, 32a and 34a is formed by two metal, preferably steel, wires twisted one about the other, and said bristle members 36 are gripped and held fixedly therebetween'. As is clearly shown in the appended drawings, the diameter of brush 3% is smaller than the diameter of brush 32, and the diameter of brush 32 is smaller than the diameter of brush 34. Each of said

30, 32 and 34 are squeeze-fitted into the hollow member, and a portion of the bristles 36 extends, as is clearly shown in the appended drawings, through said apertures 23. The center of each of said circular brushes is on the longitudinal axis AA of hollow member 2. Likewise the bristles 36 are evenly distributed throughout each brush, and each bristle is of the same substantial length and Weight. Thusly, the center of gravity of the hollow member having said brushes in combination therewith is on said longitudinal axis A-A.

In using the hair foundation of my invention to form the hereinbefore described stylish beehive hairdo, the

wearer first shapes her hair strands or tresses in the form of curls 14, including 14a, 14b, 14c and led, by means of the Well known and readily available cylindrical curler forms (not shown) in such a manner that said curls are formed in one direction about't'he head, said direction being the same as the direction of the beehive hairdo to be formed, as clearly shown in FIGURE 5. The forward or front group of curls 14a is then brushed forwardly. The foundation member is then positioned on the top portion of the head preferably either slightly forwardly towards the forehead or slightly to the rear of the mid portion of the top of the head, in accordance with the wearers desires. In FIGURE 5 of the appended drawings the hollow member 2 is shown to be positioned on the top of the head slightly forwardly towards the forehead. Then said hollow member 2 is attached to the hair tresses on the top of the head with hair fasteners, such as hairpins 16, said hairpins 16 preferably passing about ribs 4 and/ or 6 and/ or bottom ring 12, as clearly shown in FIGURE 5. Starting with curls 14a nearest hollow member 2 the hair tresses constituting said curls 14a are swirled in the direction of arrow B lightly with hairbrush 18 about the hollow member 2 and formed thereabout and attached thereto with hairpins 20. Likewise, successive portions of the hair tresses such as are constituted by

14b, 14c and 14d and adjacent portions of the hair tresses about the head constituting the remainder of curls 14 about the top portion of the head are formed about hollow member 2 and attached thereto by hairpins, as previously. Said hair tresses while being so-shaped and so-positioned, are simultaneously gripped and held in position by said brushes including the bristles 36 thereof. Thusly, the wearer, although her hair strands or tresses are relatively short and not flowing, is able herself to form the stylish beehive hairdo as shown in FIGURE 6. The end portions W of said curl groups, as is clearly shown in FIGURE 6, are tucked into the top ring 19 and fastened to hollow member 2 at said top ring It) by hairpins 22. The remaining portions of the hair tresses may be styled in accordance with the wearers desires.

As is clearly apparent from the appended drawings together with the hereinbefore set forth descriptive matter, the foundation of my invention is self-supporting and this is so irrespective of the size of the apertures.

Many alterations and changes may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention which is set forth in the appended claims which are to be construed as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.

I claim:

1. A self-supporting substantially conically shaped hair foundation for shaping and supporting a substantially conically shaped hairdo on the top portion of the human head comprising, in combination, a substantially conically shaped hollow member of relatively stiff, resilient open mesh material, and brush means positioned within said hollow member and extending through said open mesh material, for at least a portion thereof, for simultaneously I gripping the hair while being formed therearound, for

holding the so-formed hair in position thereabout and for reinforcing said hollow member, the center of gravity of said hair foundation being on the longitudinal axis of said hollow member, said hollow member and said brush means being symmetrical about said longitudinal axis.

2. A self-supporting substantially frustoconically shaped hair foundation for shaping and supporting a substantially frustoconically shaped hairdo on the top portion of the human head comprising, in combination, a substantially frustoconically shaped hollow member of relatively stiff, resilient open mesh material, and brush means positioned within said hollow member and extending through said open mesh material for at least a portion thereof for simultaneously gripping the hair while being formed therearound, for holding the so-formed hair in position thereabout and for reinforcing said hollow member, the center of gravity of said hair foundation being on the longitudinal axis of said hollow member, said hollow member and said brush means being symmetrical about said longitudinal axis, and said hair foundation being substantially station.- ary with respect to said longitudinal axis of said hollow member.

Claims

1. A SELF-SUPPORTING SUBSTANTIALLY CONICALLY SHAPED HAIR FOUNDATION FOR SHAPING AND SUPPORTING A SUBSTANTIALLY CONICALLY SHPAED HARIDO ON THE TOP PORTION OF THE HUMAN HEAD COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION, A SUBSTANTILALLY CONICALLY SHAPED HOLLOW MEMBER OF RELATIVELY STIFF, RESILIENT OPEN MESH MATERIAL, AND BRUSH MEANS POSITIONED WITHIN SAID MATERIAL, FOR AT LEAST A PORTION THEREOF, FOR SIMULRTANEOUSLY GRIPPING THE HAIR WHILE BEING FORMED THEREAROUND, FOR HOLDING THE SO-FORMED HAIR IN POSITION THEREABOUT AND FOR REINFORCING SAID HOLLOW MEMBER, THE CENTER OF GRAVITY OF SAID HAIR FOUNDATION BEING ON THE LONGITUDINAL AXIS OF SAID HOLLOW MEMBER, SAID HOLLOW MEMBER AND SAID BRUSH MEANS BEING SYMMETRICAL ABOUT SAID LONGITUDINAL AXIS.
