UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. BUELL AND JOHN WRIGHT, OF GALLIPOLIS, OHIO SAID BUELL ASSIGNOR TO HENRY KOEHLER, OF POMEROY, OHIO.
STOVE-TO P.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 261,669, dated July 25, 1882.
7 Application filedNovember'l, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM P. BUELL and JOHN WRIGHT, of Gallipolis, Gallia county, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Stove-Top, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent the distortion of stove-tops due to their alternate expansion and'contraction.
The invention consists in making each plate in two parts, hinged together on the under side, so that when expanding under the influence of heat the plate will lift and open at the hinged joint, and when contracting will close and resume its former position.
Figure'l is a plan view of a stove-plate; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in I section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents a stove-plate constructed in two sections, A A, that are hinged together end to end to form a complete plate, each section being provided on its under side, at its point of junction with-tho other,
with a downward-projecting lug, a, which lug a projects also a little beyond the section, so that when the two sections A A are placed end to end the lugs 41 to overlap each other, and between these lugs a a is'plaeed a washer, b, while transversely through both lugs and washer is passed a pin or pivot, d, forming thereby, in combination with the said lugs a a, a hinge in the center of the said plate A, the washer 01 serving to make the movement of the said hinge more free.
It is well known that the alternate expansion and contraction of the top plates of cooking-stoves causes them to warp and eventually to crack, thereby causing great inconvenience, becoming entirely unfit for use. By this device for hinging the plates, so that when expanding they may rise or open evenly at a hinged joint and close evenly on contraction, all this difficulty is avoided, and also the expense of frequently renewing the plates.
We are aware that a stove-plate has been made in two sections abutting against each other at their upper edges and united by a hinge-connection having its pivot below the upper plane of the plate, the said halves being united by plates cast with one lug and connected by a hinge-rivet to the other lug. This construction necessitates the use of two rivets resting upon top shoulders. Manufacturers find that the two rivets, after expansion by heat, cool oft and leave the two halves rigidly fastened together, while ours, which needs the use of but one rivet, will expand and contract without any such result.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The stove-sections A A, provided at their junction with overlapping lugs at a, each projecting downwardly beyond the section, in combination with a washer, 1), arranged between the lugs, and the pivot d, passing transversely through said lugs, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM PLUMER BUELL. JOHN WRIGHT.
