4 Claims.
This invention has to sive bleach solution containers, and relates particularly to the new use of a metal of the later described composition on bottles containing the usual sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions.
Household hypochlorite bleach solutionshave been sold in glass bottles having screw caps of the conventional type made of metals, or sometimes of plastic compositions, sufficiently soft to permit formation of the cap thread as by a stamping or di forming operation, and capable of deflection (in the manner of the well known vent caps) to relieve excessive container pressures. While otherwise generally satisfactory, the caps used in the past have been objectionable because of their susceptibility to corrosion and attack by the bleach solution. Despite persistent efforts to find cap forming materials resistant to reaction with the hypochlorite solution, the experience of the industry has been that prior to the present invention, all caps used on the bleach containers were subject to varying degrees of attack, with resultant formation inside the cap of compounds which were carried onto the clothes or materials to which the bleach was applied (particularly when the cap was used to measure the amount of solution used), and there appeared as stains removable only with dimculty. I
In accordance with the invention, I provide the hypochlorite solution bottle with a cap having such composition as to effectively resist attack by hypochlorite bleach solutions, and in so do- .ing have eliminated the troublesome hazard of staining the materials bleached. And in discovering that this cap composition has the long sought chemical properties, I also find that it is suitable in its physical properties from such standpoints as assuring the workability required for low cost quantity production of the cap with its die-formed thread, and the flexibility need for functioning as a. vent closure.
Essentially the invention contemplates a hypochlorite bleach container having a cap in suitable or usual physical form madeof an aluminum alloy characterized by its content of chromium and magnesium in percentages which surprisingly, have been found to render a predominately aluminum cap' highly resistant to attack. Investigations have indicated that while other metals may be present in the alloy, its suitability for the particular purpose of this invention is due to the presence of both the chromium and magnesium.
Broadly as the cap forming metal is a metal formed by alloying with aluminum, between about 0.1 to 0.5% chromium, and 0.5 to 4.5% magnesium. The alloy may contain other metals nordo generally with corro-,
' and the remainder aluminum.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the glass bottle l0 containing sodium hypochlorite bleach solution, has a screwed-M cap i I made by a stamping or die operation on sheet stock of the above alloy, with the stock converted into cup shape and having the thread i2 formed in its side wall. By reason of the alloy composition, the cap though exposed to the potentially corrosive hypochlorite solution in the bottle, is unaffected to any practical degree.
I claim:
1. A hypochlorite bleach solution-containing bottle having a cap made of an aluminum base alloy consisting essentially of aluminum alloyed with between 0.1 to 0.5% chromium, and between about 0.5 to 4.5% magnesium.
2. A hypochlorite bleach solution-containing bottle having a cap made of an aluminum base alloy consisting essentially of aluminum alloyed with between 0.1 to 0.5% chromium, and between about 0.5 to 4.5% magnesium, the alloy containing not in excess of about 1.0% impurities in the group of copper, manganese, iron, silicon and zinc.
3. A hypochlorite bleach solution-containing bottle having a cap made of an aluminum base alloy consisting essentially of aluminum alloyed with about 0.25% chromium and 2.5% magnesi- 4. A hypochlorite bleach solution-containing bottle having a cap made of an aluminum base alloy consisting essentially of aluminum alloyed with about 0.25% chromium and 2.5% magnesium, the alloy containing not in excess of about 0.10% copper, 0.45% iron and silicon, 0.1% manganese and 0.10% zinc.
