PORTABLE F OLDABLE LEG REST Filed June 14, 1951 24 20 22 /2 A //O B 26 He/ep W. Bus/rang I INVENTOR.
Patented Oct. 21, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PORTABLE FOLDABLE LEGREST Helen -W. Bushong, Lima, Ohio Application Tune 14, 1951-, Serial No. 123L514 2 Claims. (Cl. 155 169 This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in leg rests, and the principal object of the invention isvto providea convenient and .aneffici'ent support for the legs while sitting, this being so arranged that the leg may be sustained in a substantially horizontal, outstretched position with respect to the level of a chair, or the like on which the user is seated.
An important feature of the invention resides in its foldability, which permits it to be conveniently collapsed and carried when it is not in use.
some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient and dependable operation, in its pleasing appearance, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention in use;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention in its folded position;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention in its extended position, the leg member thereof being partly broken away;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the invention with the upholstery of the platform being removed;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary underside detail illustrating the attachment of one side of the leg member to the platform.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a leg rest which is designated generally by the reference character In and consists primarily of an elongated leg supporting platform l2 and a leg member I4. I
The platform [2 is formed of two sections A and B which are hingedly connected together by a hinge 16, the latter being so arranged that the two sections A and B may be sustained in an open, co-planar relation without collapsing, but
if desired, the two sections may be folded into superposed relation as shown in Figure 2 or as indicated'by the dotted 'linel'fl' in Figure. 3..
The sections A and B of the platform l2 preferably include a metallic base 20,. on which is superposed'suitable padding 22 and upholstery or covering material 24, as is best shown in Figure 3.
The free end portion of the platform section B is preferably tapered as indicated at 26 and is adapted to be positioned on the edge of a chair or the like, 28, while the outer end of the platform section A is supported by the leg member [4. The leg member is preferably formed from a single piece of wire 30 and is configurated substantially as shown in Figure 4 so as to provide a relatively wide portion 32 and a pair of side pieces 34 which, as well as the portion 32 may be provided with continuous rubber tube covering 36, as shown.
The metallic base 20 of the platform section A is angulated at the free end thereof to provide a transversely extending bearing member 38 having inturned flanges 40 at the ends thereof, in which are rotatably journaled angulated portions 42 at the ends of the ends of the side pieces 34 of the leg member [4.
The extremities of the portions 42 are substantially U-shaped as indicated at 44 so that they may abut the bearing member 38 to sustain the leg member 14 in the position shown in Figure 4, but the entire device may be folded to the position shown in Figure 2 wherein the portion 32 of the leg member may be utilized as a handle for carrying purposes.
The device is sustained in the folded position by a strap 46 which is secured to the platform section A and, after embracing the member I4, is separably connected to the section B as indicated at 48.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:
1. A leg rest comprising an elongated leg supporting platform adapted to have one end portion thereof positioned on a seat and consisting of two sections having contiguous edges thereof hinged together, a transversely extending bearing member provided at the other end of said platform, and a leg member including a bight portion and a pair of side pieces, said side pieces having end portions thereof rotatably journaled in opposite ends of said bearing member and terminating in arpair of angulated stop elements which may abut the bearing member to sustain the leg member and the platform in a predetermined angular position.
2. A foldable leg rest comprising anelongated leg supporting platform adapted to have one end portion thereof positioned on a seat and consisting of two longitudinally aligned half-sections having contiguous end edges hinged together whereby they may be folded to a superposed relation, a transversely extending bearing member provided at the other end of said platform, a leg member including a bight portion and a pair of side pieces, said side pieces having end portions thereof rotatably journalled in opposite ends of said bearing member and terminating in a pair of angulated stop elements which may abut the bearing member to sustain the leg member at a substantially obtuse angle to the platform, the transverse distance between said side pieces being greater than the width of said platform and said stop elements having a limited rotary movement in said bearing member whereby said leg member may be swung to a position wherein it embraces the folded platform half-sections and the bight portion thereof affords a carrying handle, and means for sustaining said half-sections and leg member in their folded positions.
