This invention relates .to a folding seat and more particularly to a foldable seat particularly designed for sportsmen.

It is an object of this invention to provide a folding pocket seat of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter, particularly designed for deer hunters, the folding seat, when extended, providing for the hunter to arise from a seated position with a minimum of time and effort with the least possible motion.

Another object of this invention is to provide a folding seat of this kind which is readily c01- lapsible to a small compact device to be easily carried in a pocket of a hunters jacket to be readily extended to support the hunter in a seated position.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a folding seat of this kind having a single telescoping leg and a foldable brace engaging between the seat and the leg, the seat having an arcuate cut-out position on the rear edge for engagement partly about a side of a tree or other suitable fixed support to provide for the firm support of the seat for holding the seat against swinging about the leg engaged on the ground.

A further object of this invention is to provide a folding seat which, in one position, may support a hunter or other person by engagement partly with the legs of the person, as behind his bent knees above the calf of his legs.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the combination, arrangement and details of construction as set forth in the following specification and drawings and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure l is a side elevation of a hunters folding seat, constructed according to an embodiment of my invention, supported against a tree.

Figure 4 is a side elevation, partly broken away and partly in section, of the folding seat in its folded condition.

Figure 5 is a side elevation of the folding seat, when used without a fixed support.

Referring to the drawings the numeral Ill designates generally a folding seat, constructed according to an embodiment of my invention, particularly formed for folding to a compact position to be carried about in the pocket of a hunters jacket, in a ladys handbag or other portable,

compact carrying case. The folding seat II] is preferably made of light, strong metal as aluminum or other suitable material which will provide suitable strength in a compact, light weight device of this kind.

The folding seat In is formed with a flat plate I I which constitutes the seat on which the hunter is to be seated and is particularly formed for engagement with a portion of a tree or other suitable fixed support against which the seat is rested for holding the seat in its desired extended position.

The seat I I is formed with a pair of outwardly extending arms I2 and I4, intermediate the length thereof, and a rearwardly extending center panel or arm I5. The outer edges of the side arms I2 and I4 are rounded to present convex arms and the rear edge iii, of the center panel I5 is bowed inwardly, along the length of the seat I I, to provide for the secure engagement of the rear edge of the seat with a segmental outer portion of a supporting tree or other fixed support.

A tubular supporting leg member I! is pivoted, at its upper end, to the rear end of the seat II, at the rear end of the center panel I5. A pair of depending, apertured, ears I8 are fixed on the lower side of the rear end of the center panel I5 and are spaced apart, transversely of the seat I I, for pivotally receiving therebetween the upper end of the tubular member IT. A pivot pin I9 is engaged between the ears I8 and through the upper end of the member I! and provides for the swinging of the tubular leg section I! from a folded position, underlying and abutting the lower side of the seat II, to an extended position inclined downwardly and forwardly from the pivot pin I9.

A bracing member 20 is pivotally connected to the member I1 and is formed for engagement with the seat II to secure the member I! in its extended position, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. An annular ring 2| is engaged about the upper portion of the leg member I1 and is freely slidable and rotatable thereon. A pair of spaced apart pivot ears 22 are fixed to. or formed integrally with the ring 2|, on one side thereof, and a pivot pin 24 is engaged through the ears 22 and the lower end of the tubular bracing bar 20.

A clamping collar 25 is slidable on the tubular member II, below the ring 2| to provide a lower abutment or stop member for limiting the downward sliding of the ring H. The annular collar 25 is formed in the manner of a split ring clamp having a screw 26 engaged between the split ends for clampingly securing the collar 25 at a selected position along the length of the leg member IT.

A depending tang or pin 21 is fixed to, or preferably struck from the forward end of the seat I I and is inclined downwardly and rearwardly therefrom for engagement in the upper, open end of the brace 20, in its extended position.

A second tubular leg member 28 is telescopically received in the lower open end of the leg member I! and together the leg members I! and 28 constitute the supporting leg 29 for the seat II. The lower leg member 28 is formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart openings or apertures 30 along the length thereof aligned with diametrically opposed openings 3| for securing the leg section 28 in a selected extended position relatiye to the leg section IT.

A pin 32 is slidably engaged through a selected pair of apertures 38 and 3! in the upper end of the leg section 28 and the diametrically opposed openings 34 in the lower end of the leg section I! for securing the sections I! and 28 in selected extended position. A pair of transversely aligned openings 35, in the lower end of the lower leg section 28 provide for the securing of the leg section 28 in its retracted or telescoped position within the upper leg section H.

A suitable foot or plug 36 is fixed in the lower open end of the lower leg section 28 and is engageable with ground or other supporting surface on which the seat II is to be supported. Preferably the foot 36 is made of rubber or other suitable resilient material to provide for the secure engagement of the leg 29 on a hard surface as rock or the like.

In the use and operation of the folding seat Ill, the leg section 28 will be retracted or telescoped within the upper leg section I! and secured therein by the engagement of the pin 32 in the

openings

34 and 35. The ring 2| will be rotated a quarter turn and slid to the upper end of the leg section I! and the brace 20 will flatly underlie the seat H along the length of the leg section [7. For extending the leg 29 and brace Zll, the clamping collar 25 is moved downwardly on the upper leg section I! to a selected position and there secured. The ring 2! is then slid down to abut the upper side of the collar 25, rotated a quarter turn, and the pin 21, on the front of the seat II is engaged in the front, upper end of the brace 20.

In the extended position of the folding seat ID, the rear arcuate edge I B may be engaged with the bark of a tree with the leg 29 extending forwardly and outwardly for supporting the seat ll against the tree or the rear edge of the seat ll ma be engaged behind the folded knees of a hunter to be seated on the seat II with the leg 29 extending downwardly and rearwardly. A suitably rearward force exerted on the seat II by the legs of the hunter will suitably support the seat in a horizontal position, as shown in Figure 5, for suitably supporting the hunter.

I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A portable folding seat comprising a seat member having one end formed to embracingly engage an upstanding cylindrical support, a first leg section arranged beneath said seat member longitudinally thereof and having one end positioned contiguous to said one end of said seat member and mounted thereon for swinging movement from a retracted position abutting and confronting the under surface of said seat member to various extended positions inclined downwardly with respect to the latter, a second leg section arranged longitudinally of said first leg section and mounted on the latter for extensile and retractile movement with respect to the other end of said first leg section into and out of engagement with a ground surface contiguous to and spaced from said upstanding support, means carried by said first leg section and selectively engaging said second leg section for holding the latter in various positions of the extensile and retractile movement, a ring circumposed about first leg section and mounted on the latter for movement toward and away from the other end thereof, brace means carried by said ring and engaging said seat member, and means carried by said first leg section and engageable with said ring for holding the latter in select positions of the movement toward said other end of said first leg section wherein said seat member and said first leg section are held in a select one of said various extended positions.

2. A portable folding seat comprising a seat member having one end formed to embracingly engage an upstanding cylindrical support, a first le section arranged beneath said seat member longitudinally thereof and having one end positioned contiguous to said one end of said seat member and mounted thereon for swinging movement from a retracted position abutting and confronting the under surface of said seat member to various extended positions inclined downwardly with respect to the latter, a second leg section arranged longitudinally of said first leg section and mounted on the latter for extensile and retractile movement with respect to the other end of said first leg section into and out of engagement with a ground surface contiguous to and spaced from said upstanding support, means carried by said first leg section and selectively engaging said second leg section for holding the latter in various positions of the extensile and retractile movement, a ring circumposed about said first leg section and mounted on the latter for movement toward and away from the other end thereof, brace means carried by said ring and engaging said seat member, means carried by said first leg section and engageable with said ring for holding the latter in select positions of the movement toward said other end of said first leg section wherein said seat member and said first leg sections are held in a select one of said various extended positions, and a foot fabricated of a resilient material carried by the extensible end of said second leg section for firmly engaging said ground surface.

3. A portable folding seat comprising a seat member having one end formed to embracingly engage an upstanding cylindrical support, a first leg section arranged beneath said seat member longitudinally thereof and having one end positioned contiguous to said one end of said seat member and mounted thereon for swinging movement from a retracted position abutting and confronting the under surface of said seat member to variou extended positions inclined downwardly with respect to the latter, a second leg section arranged longitudinally of said first leg section and mounted on the latter for extensile and retractile movement with respect to the other end of said first leg section into and out of engagement with a ground surface contiguous to and spaced from said upstanding support, means carried by said first leg section and selectively engaging said second leg section for holding the latter in various positions of the extensile and retractile movement, a ring circumposed about said first leg section and mounted on the latter for movement toward and away from the other end thereof, a dependin lug carried by the under surface of said seat member contiguous to the other end thereof, a brace arranged between said first leg section and said seat member and having one end pivotally mounted on said ring and having the other end engageable about said lug, and means carried by the first leg section and engageable with said ring for holding the latter in select positions of the movement toward said other end of said first leg section wherein said seat member and said first leg sec- 6 tion are held in a select one of said various extended positions.
