BOTTLE STOPPER.
N0. 261,095. Patented July 11, 1882.
INVENTOR JJJe MzWJZZnMn, flmwdmfi dmmi ATTORNEYS WITNESSES moiyifi d UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH W. JOHNSON, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR' OF ONE- HALF TO HENRY C. WILLIAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
BOTTLE-8T0 PPE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,095, dated July 11, 1882.
Application filed April 20, 1862. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osEPH W. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical sectional View of my stopper, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
This invention has relation to bottle-stopper fasteners; andit consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claimappended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates the neck of a bottle having a wire or other metallic neckband, b, to which the pivot-lugs c of the bow-lever dare connected. The ends of the lever are provided with lugs e, to which are connected the lower ends of links g, which extend upward and are connected to lugs h of the cap-plate, one on each side.
The cap-plate B is made of metal, and is provided with a central perforation, k, which communicates with the valve-seat m, which is formed in a projection or hollow central caselug, l, under the plate, as shown in the draw-' ings. Lateral perforations n are also made through the wall of the valve-seat under the horizontal portion or body of the plate, and an opening, 12, is made in the bottom of the valve-seat m, as shown. Around the valveseat lug or projection a groove or bearing, 21, is formed, serving to engage the central opening of the rubber stopper or washer D, when the latter is fitted under the cap-plate.
In the valve-seat is a rubber check-valve, E,
which is formed with an elastic conical pedes- 4 5 tal or flange-support, 2, which rests over the opening 12 in the bottom of the recess in the valve-seat, and serves to cause the valve to act quickly when relieved from the outside pressure by the action of the aerated liquid within the bottle to close the same.
The operation is as follows: When thelever' d is pressed down the cap-plate B, with its washer D, is relieved from its bearing on the mouth of the bottle and falls back, so that the bottle is opened. The central opening, k, and the elastic valve below the same are designed to facilitate filling the bottle with soda or other light or aerated drink without opening the bottle by the removal of the cap. To effect this the draft-spout is brought into engagement with the opening k, and the pressure of the aerated liquid will force the valve back, so that the liquid enters, filling the bottle. When the bottle is removed from the draft-spout the 6 external pressure is relieved and the valve springs up at once, closing the opening and preventing the air from escaping and rendering the liquid flat.
Havingdescribed thisinvention, whatIclaim, 70 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a bottle-stopper having a perforated capplate, B, formed with a hollow valve-seat lug, l, below the perforation, and a rubber washer, D, around said lug, the rubber valve E, having an elastic conical pedestal or flange-support, 2, resting on the bottom of the recess in the valve-seat lug having the apertures n n and p, and causing the valve to act quickly when relieved from outside pressure, substan- 8o tia-lly as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH W. JOHNSON. Witnesses:
