Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE L. HEATON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,681, dated July 4, 1882.
I Application filed November 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Honnon L. HEATON, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and-Locks; andldo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved sash-holder with the bolt in its extended position. Fig. 2 is a front or face view of the same, showing the bolt pushed back into its recess flush with the face-plate. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bolt detached, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the complete device with the bolt in its extended position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of sash-holders which consist of a beveled bolt pivoted within a box or casing and adapted to support the sash upon or by the shoulder formed by the bolt when it projects from its case, which latter is mortised into the side or o jamb of the window-frame and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of a device of that class, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a box or casing made preferably ofcastiron, and having a face-plate, a, and beveled or inclined sides and ends, as shown at b and c, respectively.- The face-plate a has countersunk screw-holes d d in its projecting top and bottom parts for its attachment to the win- (low-casing.
B represents the bolt, which is of the configuration clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, with beveled or inclined sides e, and an inclined top,f, to conform to the shape of its box or casing A. The back part is concaved or hollowed out, as shown at g, and is cast with two projecting ears, h h, made with a curved slot,
1'. The top part of the bolt may have side the bottom rail of the sash.
slots or recesses, f f, on opposite sides, for the purpose hereinafter stated.
The sides of box A are cast with inwardlyprojecting studs G, upon a pair of which the bolt is pivoted by slipping the slotted cars 71. upon the studs, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Where the box is cast with two pairs of studs, as represented in the drawings, the side recesses,f, in the head of the bolt permit this to be pushed all the way back into the casing by making room for the side studs, 0, in the top part. By casting the box or casing A with two pairs of pivotal studs it may be reversed; or the bolt may be reversed, if desired.
The lower end of the bolt forms a right-angled lip or shoulder, 70, which, when. the bolt is in its extended position, abuts upon the inclined bottom of box A, and thus relieves the pivotal studs 0 and bolt-ears h of strain. The bolt has a thumb-notch, i, in its face for tilting it out of its casing, if it should not tilt out readily of itself. When the sash is down the bolt' is back in its box flush with the face-plate; but in raising the sash after it has passed the bolt the latter will tilt out of its box into the position shown in Fig. 4, and thus support To lower the sash the bolt is simply pushed back again into its box flush with the face-plate.
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim broadly the combination of the box or casing and its pivoted bolt; but v What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The sash lock or holder herein shown and described, composed of the box or casing A, having the pivotal studs 0, and reversible bolt B, having the slotted ears h h, thumbnotch a", flat head f, and side recesses,f f, constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
