SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,629, dated July 4, 1882,
Application filed May 24, 1882. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS H. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing'at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in ornamented Bird- Skins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a new manufacture, consisting in a bird-skin having its inherent covering of feathers or down ornamented with attached supplementary feathers of different color from those composing said covering, whereby a beautifuland natural effect is produced.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanyin gdrawin g, which represents a face View.
The letter A designates the bird-skin with its inherent covering of feathers, and B the supplementary feathers used for ornamentation. These supplementary feathers are of a different color from those composing said covering, and they are permanently attached at the desired places by pasting the stems of the supplementary feathers to the feather covering below the surface of the latter, or by pasting or sewing such stems to the skin, or by any other suitable means. Bythe supplementary feathers are meant feather-tips or small feathers the stems of which may be embedded andconcealed in the feathercoverin g. The disposition of said supplementary feathers of course may be regular or otherwise, and it will be perceived that by means thereof a plain feather covering may be made to imitate one of mottled appearance, or various other beautiful effects may be produced without producing an unnatural appearance.
I am aware that fur has heretofore been ornamented with feathers; but the article thus produced is unnatural in appearance, whereas by my invention an original or natural look-is retained.
