Application February 18, 1946, Serial No. 648,479 I art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a-containerfor holding a spool of adhesive tape or plasterusually kept in the home for emergency first aid cases. The container allows the plaster to be dispensed in predetermined lengths as desired... It will be'found useful also for holding and dispensing adhesive tape used in place of string for tying packages.
The container is designed to hold the plaster or tape in such manner that its free end will be readily available to the user, whereby he can grasp said free end and after pulling the tape to the desired length with the fingers of one hand, use the fingers of the other to close the knife carrying member for severing the tape.
The container is provided with a removable cover which allows for an easy and simple means of reloading the container with a new roll or spool of tape or plaster.
The object will be understood by referring to the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the container, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the cover removed.
Fig 3 is an end elevation, showing parts broken away.
Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing a perspective of a channel member employed in the device.
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a side elevation of a knife carrying member employed in the device.
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing a perspective of a cover employed, parts being broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device embodies an annular casing I having an embossed ridge 2 disposed near the free edge 3 of lateral wall 4, whereby to form a stop for the adjacent edge of removable cover 5 against which it abuts when said cover 5 is in closed position.
There is welded or otherwise mounted to casing I on wall 4, a channel member III having lateral sides II, II. A stationary shaft I2 is suspended between said walls II, II near one end thereof. The ends of said shaft are riveted to said sides or walls II, II. Shaft I2 provides an axle for knife holding member I4 to swing thereon as a pivot. Tothis purpose one end of member I4 is bent around shaft I2 to form a bearing surface for member I4. v
Almember I5 is welded to the free end of member I4. It has formedintegral therewith and at right angles thereto knife blade I6 which tapers from one end to the other crosswise as shown particularly in Fig. 1. The surface of blade I6 from top tovbottom thereof is made on the arc of a circle whose imaginary. center is the axial center of shaft I2, whereby to form a co-operating surface with knife blade I'I hereinafter mentioned.
Knife blade I! is welded to the opposite ends of sidesv II, II of channel. member III. The flanged 'part I1 thereof is welded to the lower surface I8 of channel member I0. It tapers crosswise from one end to the other similar to the taper of knife blade I6, whereby to form a pair of scissors therewith. Furthermore, blade I'Ifis made on the arc of a circle whose imaginary center is the axial center of shaft I2.
The means for holding the spool of tape I9 within casing I, contemplates a cylindrical member 20 welded to the inner surface of easing I and outstanding therefrom. Said member 20 is disposed eccentric to the surface of easing I, whereby to allow more space above than below in chamber 2| of easing I. This additional space above member 20 in chamber 2| will prevent the peripheral surface of the spool of tape I9 from binding against the inner surface of wall 4 of easing I in the event that the central aperture of the spool of tape I9 is larger than the diameter of member 20. This binding would occur when the user pulls on the free end 22 of tape I9 to withdraw a portion thereof.
The means for holding the free end 22 of tape I9 embodies a fiat spring 25 whose lower end is welded to the inner wall of easing I at 26. A loop 21 is made in spring 25 to provide a smooth surface for the passage of tape I9. It is extended upward through an aperture 28 in wall 4 of easing I and through an aligned aperture 29 in the lower surface I8 of channel member III with its free end 3| raised a little above the upper edges of sides I I, II of member ID, whereby to hold the free end 22 of tape I9 in convenient position for grasping with the fingers.
A narrow slit 35 is made in one of the sides II of member ID to allow for the easy insertion of tape I9 into correct position with its free end 22 resting on spring 25, adjacent end 3I thereof.
Cover 5 has an aperture or reentrant hole made in its lateral wall 31 to cooperate with the aligned 3 apertures 28 in wall 4 and 29 in channel member I B, when in closed position.
A narrow space 40 is provided between that portion of the under surface of channel member II] from ridge 2 to the outer marginal edge of wall 4, whereby to allow for the insertion of that portion of wall 31 of cover 5 when in closed position. i
In operation, the user will remove cover 5, insert a roll oi adhesive tape I9 on member 20, thread the free end 22 thereof edgewise through slit 35 into aligned apertures 28 and 29 with its free end 22 resting on the free portion 3! or spring 25. When it is desired to use a portion oi tape I9, the operator will lift the free end of member I4 and swing it upward, then grasp with; the

2. In a dispensing container for adhesive tape, an annular casing, a channel member having sides mounted on said casing, a stationary knife tapering from one end to the other mounted in said channel member, a knife holding member pivotally mounted in said channel member, anotherirnife tapered from game end to the other carried by said holding member, whereby to cooperate with said stationary knife, to shear said tape, a slit formed in one of these sides of said ghannel member to allow for insertion of tape relative to said knives, the sides of said channel member having rounded ends for guiding the lr-nije garrifid by the holding member, relative to the knife in the channel member, and a spring mounted in said channel member for holding the endoi-said tape in given position.
