Specification of Letters Patent. Patented M 21, 1912,
' Applicationjfiled December 3, 1910, Serial No. 596,232. Renewed March 4, 1912. SerialNo. 681,657.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUs'rIN KAY Tours, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Container and Cutter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description .of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined 'con tainer and cutter, and it may be said to consist in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of the parts as will appear from the description and claims hereinafter.
One object of the invention is to' provide a 'device of the class specified in' which a cutter is conveniently arranged in a novel manner and adapted to act effectively to sever astrip of adhesive plaster or tape, or the like, unwound from av coil thereof-disposed within the container.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for revolubly mounting the coil within the container.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novelconstruction whereby the a condition to be easily grasped by the fingers. 1
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from 'a consideration'of the following descriptions of the preferred form 0 construction in which the invention may embodied, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which, 1
' Figure 1 is a'perspective view of-a container with the cover shown detached in order to show the interior parts; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the above with the cutter in the operative position. j r
-The container 2 may preferably con s1st of the heads 3 and 4 and the cylindrical v body 5 which latter is preferably provided with a slot 6 therein. Each ofthe heads is,
by suitably crimping. the material thereof, provided with an annular groove 7 mto which edges of the body 5 may fit; the parts biirred over at each end. The heads 3'and 4 may be formed to provide, adjacent to slot 6, guides 11 in which is adapted to slide the curved cutter. 12. The cutter is desirably provided with a :fingerpiece 13 whereby it may be moved either to cover or uncoverslot 6, or to a position forwardly of the slot. Adjacent toslot 6 the material .of body 5 may be inwardly deflected to form a depression '15 over which the cutting edge 1 10f the cutter is positioned'in operation. Upon the spindle 9 may be revolubly mounted. on asleeve 8 .acoil of adhesive plaster, .or tape, or the like, the outer end 16 of which may be brought upwardlythrough the slot 6 and pressed down on the lip 17 on the cylindrical body 5 adjacent to depression 15.
In" operation, the end portion of the tape or adhesive plaster positioned above depression 15 maybe grasped'bythe fingers and pulled from lip 17 and as much of the plaster or tape as desired may be unwound from .the 00119. Cutter 1-2 may thenbe moved over slot 6 until its cuttingjedge 14 ing the end 16 of the plaster or tape to be pressed upon and made to adhere to lip 17 hering to the lip 17 thus presenting a free endof the plaster or tape projecting over said depression 15.
a is in position over the depression 15,- caus- While one form of construction in which the invention may be embodied-has been illustrated and described, various changes andmodifications thereof will readily'occur to those skilled in the art, and the rightis therefore reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim: r [1; In a device of the class specified, the combination of a container provided with a .slot therein and guides adjacent to sald slot, aspindle in the container, a sleeve loosely mounted on the spindle and adapted to carry a. coil of adhesive plaster thereon, and a cutter arranged movably 1n said guldes.
2. In a dev1ce. of the class specified, the combination of a container having guides formed thereon, said container rovlded with a slot therein and having a 11p and a depression adjacent to said slot, means perllO 'mitting rotation of a coil of adhesive plaster disposed within said container, and a. cutter arranged movably in said guides on said container aldjacent to said slot, substantially 5 as described.
' In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to thisspecification in the presence of two subscribing :it Los Angeles county of Los Angeles, State of Californis this 3rd daj of December A. D. 1910.
