BED'JACKET AND SIMILAR WEARING APPAREL Fil ed se t. 7, 1950 Patented July 22, 1952 BED JACKET AND SIMILAR WEARING APPAREL Toni Straus, London, England Application September 7, 1950, Serial No. 183 ,'48,4; In Great Britain August 4, 1950 q 3 claims. Cl. 2-408) This invention relates tobedjackets and similar wearing apparel.
When bedjackets and similar wearing apparel of usual cut and designate to be taken off a problem is presented because the wearer has to lift up the upper part of his body and/or to turn to hi side in order to be able to remove or have the garment removed.
It is in the nature of the present invention to provide a bedjacket or similar wearing apparel which avoids these disadvantages and inconveniences and which can easily be taken off by the wearer himself or be removed by a helping hand without calling for any effort on the part of, and without causing any inconvenience or trouble to the wearer. For taking ofi or removing the bedjacket or such like according tov the present invention it is not necessary that the upper part of the body of the wearer is lifted up or turned. Even when the arm of the wearer are stifi so that they cannot be bent, the bedjacket or such like can be taken off or removed easily. This proves very convenient especially for elderly and/or ill people who should not or cannot move or be moved. Of course such a bedjacket or similar wearing apparel according to this invention is also mucheasier and more convenient to put on than a garment of usual cut.
This is attained by this invention by slitting the back of the bedjacket or similar wearing apparel along the centre line from the bottom edge up to near the top seam where the two parts of the garment remain permanently together. Of course, instead of slitting, the garment may be made of two separate halve which are permanently joined together for only a short length at the top part. The two parts of the divided or of two halves made bedjacket or such like are held together at the back by suitable elastic means of one kind or another which means on the one hand are strong enough to hold the two halves of the garment closely together while on the other hand these said means are elastic enough to allow for a sufficient separation of the two halves to take off or remove the garment swiftly and of wellknown'form with the front panels closed and showing the invention incorporated, therein; and 9 Fig. 2 is a: yiew similar toils. 1 withjthe .front panel opened and thrownback forino're clearly disclosing the invention. 1
As shown on the drawing the bedjacket J is of well known form and includes a back panel B, front panels F, a neck opening N and sleeves S united to the back and front panels by arm hole seams 4a and 4b. In accordance with the present invention the back panel B is centrally vertically slit at 5 from its lower edge to a point adjacent 1 its upper edge or the neck opening N, thereby dividin the usual back panel B into a pair of panels la and lb. These panels are united for a short distance from theneck opening N downwardly as indicated at 6 and these panels la and lb have free overlapping edges 5a, 52) below the line of connection 6.
The free edges 5a,'5b of the respective back panels la, lb, are normally maintained in lapped relation by mean of two pairs of elastic strips 2a, 2b and 3a, 3b which extend transversely across the inner faces of the back panels la, lb. The outer ends of these strips 2a, 3a. are secured to the arm hole seam 4a and the outer ends of the strips 2b, 3b are secured to the arm hole seam 4b.
The strips 2a, 3a extend across the slit 5 and the free edge 5b of panel lb and have their inner.
endssecured thereto adjacent said free edge 51;. The strips 21), 31) extend across the slit 5 as well as the free edge 5a of panel laand have their inner ends secured thereto adjacent said edge 5a.
Thus it will be seen that the inner ends of the elastic strips, whose outer ends are secured to the arm hole seam, of each panel, are connected to the opposite panel adjacent the free edges thereof, for normally retaining these edges in lapped relation to close the slit 5.
It is obvious that instead of using two pair of 1. A closure for a bedjacket having a neck opening, opposed arm hole seams, and separable panels having adiacent free edges normally overlapped 1n symmetrical relation to a center line extending from the bottom of the garment to a point adjacent the neck opening Where the panels are connected; comprising a pair of strip of elastic material, the opposed ends of said strips being connected to the respective arm hole seams, the strips extending transversely across the respective panel and having their adjacent ends connected to respectively opposed panels at opposite sides of said line for y'ieldably maintaining said edges in normally overlapped relation.
2. The structure according to claim 1, together r i with a second pair of strips of elastic material in vertically spaced relation to the first pair of strip and having their opposed ends connected to the respective arm hole seams, and their ad-- jacent ends connected to respectively opposed panels at opposite sides of said line.
3. A bedjacket or similar garment having a neck opening, opposed arm hole seams and separable back panels having adjacent free edges intermediate the arm holes and extending from the bottom of the garment to a point a short distance below the neck opening, and means for yieldably retaining thesaid edges in lappedgarment closing position comprising two vertically spaced TONI STRAUS.
