' This. invention .relates o1 new and 'usefulimprovements in receptacle covers, and, more particularly, the aim is to provide a novel and valuable cover adaptedto be opened in an improved Amanner by the aidofa.. prying tool such as a screw driver, the back of a spoon, etc.
YMore specically, the lpresent invention proposes an improved structure for the receptacle cover wherebyunintended distortion of specially .shaped parts thereof will be preventedduring severing of the cover.
Also, in a receptacle covercharacterized by the inclusion of an annular channel inwardly directed toward the receptacle body, there is provided anl improved receptor, constituted by said channel, for said tool, for facilitating thev imparting; to the tool of a prying action to eiect a ripping through ofthe cover material by the aid of a scored or other weakened line running along the channel at a special location therein, and
such a scoring line which can practicably be located at said vspecial location, particularly when the anti-distortion means above referred to is feature of the improved channel-receptoris .the association therewith of a'buttressing structure constituted by a disk-like entity and'forming an integral part of the cover established by a recession of the central portion of the cover, and the combination with such recession (indeed, asa result of its establishment) of a second innermost continuous or annular wall; and,
V preferably, in further combination with the just vdescribed structure, the inclusion of an extra member of trifling cost added to and included in the cover. Such extra member is essentially, for cost reduction purposes, and for inherent strength, mainly of uniplanar nature rather than mainly of ring, tube or 'sleeve characteristic.
Because of the inclusion of said recession and the inclusion of said second inner Wall, an annular chamber is provided inwardly of and preferably concentric with the first-named channel; otherwise stated, a second annular channel is 'provided'which, instead of having a baseA wall vdepressed down into the cover as in thecaseof said lrst-named channel, has a roof wallwhich is at a' higher level on the cover thansaid'recessed central portion thereof.

Referring nowin more detail to the drawings, and first to Figs. 1 4, a conventional form of receptacle body is indicated at III, and its cover, generally, at I I.
The c over I-I .is formed to include an inwardly directedchannel I-2 having an outer wall I3 which continues, into a base wall I4 which continues into an inner wall I5 A score line I6 is arranged inlv conjunction with rthe channel I24 in the vicinity of the junction of the inner wall I5 Withthe base wall I4 of the cover. These are some of the essential parts of the improved cover. It is intended that thecover be engaged upon .-thetopof ,a receptacle, such as the .receptacle I.
This v,engagement may be ,accomplished in the rusual way by the double seam shown.
It is to be noted that the said score line I6 is Aat the'bottom of the channel I2, and at or very near the junction of the base wall I4 andthe inner wall I5 pf said channel.
Also, according to the present invention, in
addition to the elements I2-I6, the cover Il is shown as having the already mentioned recessed central portion, or the aforesaid second base wall, this shown at Il; the already mentioned second-named annular channel for providing the aforesaid annular chamber I8 topped by a roof wall; the already mentioned second continuous annular wall, as shown at |83;v and the already mentioned continuous circularly extended fulcrum-providing or assisting corner, as shown at I9.
When a prying tool of the kind above mentioned or of any article conveniently at hand, is at its end to be its working end inserted into the channel I2 of Fig. 3, and then rockedin a clockwise direction in that view, the cover material at the score line I6 gives, and there is a breakthrough along said line, quickly and certainly; the annular walls I5 and I8E now coacting with the main central recessed portion Il of the cover to prevent distortion of the structure I5-I8e- I-I'L it being noted that the degree of recession of said portion Il is preferably considerably less than the degree of recession of the base wall I4 of the channel I2.
The already referred to fulcrum is located at I9. When a. portion of the score line I6 is severed and so a portion of the length of the channel I2 is pried open, it is possible to insert the prying tool beneath such pried-open portion of the cover, past the torn line turned away from which is a lip 2l which at or near its root limit bears against said corner I9. On now whirling the prying tool longitudinally of the channel I2, the lip 2l may be circularly extended to a point where it is very easy to tear out the central part of the cover.
The advantage secured by such coaction is the added fulcrum power to the prying tool.
Referring to the modification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the parts to which are applied reference numerals with primes added correspond, respectively, to the parts to which have been applied the same reference numerals without primes. Here, it will be noted, the main central recessed portion Il' of the cover II is of even a less degree of recession than the degree of recession of the channel I2. Also, the cover II includes an extra or added member, to Wit, a disk 22. As will be noted from Fig. 6, the aforesaid fulcrum corner is now directly coincident with the periphery of said disk. although the corner last named is, as it were, backed up by a corner I9 corresponding to the corner I9.v
Referring to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the parts to which are applied reference numerals with double primes added correspond, respectively, to the parts to which have been applied the same reference numerals without primes. Here, the main central recessed portion Il of the cover I I, is shown as of about the same degree of recession as the main central portion Il of the cover II. In this arrangement, in substitution for the disk 22, there is provided an exceedingly shallow-cup structure 23, which can be readily stamped and drawn from thin sheet material; said structure 23 comprising a main disk-like central portionv 23a surrounded by an upturned annular skirt extension in the form of a very low Wall 23h, which wall, as shown, desirably, completely fills the chamber I8.
While I have illustrated and described the pre- Y 4 ferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a receptacle cover having a recessed main central portion .bounded by an upstanding wall continuing into a circumferential inwardly directed channel having an inner wall and a base wall, a score line in the channel at the junction of the inner Wall and the base Wall along which the cover can be broken open, a cup-like structure reinforcing the recessed main central portion and the upper portion of the inner wall of the channel, said cup-like structure comprising a main disk-like central portion secured to the inner face of the recessed main central portion, said disk-like central portion being of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the inner periphery of the inner Wall, and an upstanding wall continuing from the inner periphery of said disklike central portion with its outer periphery in contact with the inner periphery of the inner wall.
2. In a receptacle cover having a recessed main central portion bounded by an upstanding Wall continuing into a circumferential inwardly directed channel having an inner Wall and a base wall, a score line in the channel at the junction of the inner wall and the base wall along which the cover can be broken open, a cup-like structure reinforcing the recessed main central portion and the upper portion of the inner wall of the channel, said cup-like structure comprising a main disk-like central portion secured to the inner face of the recessed main central portion, said disk-like central portion being of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the inner periphery of the inner wall, and an upstanding wall continuing from the inner periphery of said diskf like central portion with its outer periphery in contact with the inner periphery of the inner wall, the upstanding wall of the recessed main central portion being spaced from the inner wall a dista-nce equal to the thickness of said upstanding Wall of said cup-like structure so that the outer periphery of the upstanding Wall of the recessed main central portion is in contact with the inner periphery of said. upstanding wall of said cup-like structure.
