Description
4 Claims.
This invention relates to gutter-hanger devices, and more particularly to a bracket or hanger device for supporting or hanging roof gutters, said device being of the adjustable type.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved adjustable gutter hanger device which is very simple in construction, very easy to install, and which permits roof gutters to be hung in proper position without requiring nails to be employed through the shingles adjacent the gutter.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved gutter-supporting bracket or hanger which is very inexpensive to manufacture, neat in appearance, which provides a secure support for the gutter, and which is adjustable to meet a wide range of structural conditions.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the main body portion of a gutter-supporting device constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a hanger strap employed with the supporting member of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken through a building adjacent the eave portion thereof, showing a gutter-supporting device in accordance with the present invention installed in operative position;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4, showing a modified gutter-supporting device of the present invention employed on a building whose roof has a relatively steep slope as compared to the building illustrated in Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of the end portion of a further modified form of supporting bracket according to the present invention adapted to receive a gutter of different shape from the bracket shown in Figures 1 to 5.
Referring to the drawings, II designates the main body portion of the gutter-supporting bracket, said main body portion comprising a strap member I2 of suitable metal bar stock which has secured to its outer end a saddle member I3. Saddle member I3 is curved to correspond with the cross-sectional contour of standard gutters and is adapted to receive a standard gutter therein. The saddle member I3 has an inturned depending lip I4 at its inner end which is adapted to fit over the inside margin of the gutter. At its outer end the saddle member I3 is looped, as shown at I5, to receive the outer marginal bead of the gutter.
The outer portion of strap member I2 adjacent saddle member I3, is downwardly bowed, as shown at I6, and is formed at its bottom edge with a series of square notches IT.
The strap member I2 is pivotally secured at its inner end within a U-bracket I9 having the securing feet 22. As shown in Figure 4, the feet 22 of bracket I9 may be secured adjacent the cave of a building by means of nails 2| passing upwardly through the feet 22 into the under surface of a rafter or associated member 23. Referring to Figure 4, it will be seen that the head 24' of a vertical depending fiat T-shaped bar member 24 is fastened to the outer surface of the member 23 adjacent the strap member I2, said bar member 24 being formed at one margin of its depending leg with anchoring means or notches defining a series of vertically-spaced, upwardly-hooked lugs 25. One of the square notches I! of the member I2 is engaged over a selected hooked lug 25, the notched portionof member I2 being received in the vertical notch portion of the bar 24 inwardly adjacent the selected lug. The cooperating notch I1 and lug 25 are selectedso that the saddle I3 will be located in the correct position to receive the gutter whereby the gutter will be positioned to receive drainage from the roof shingles, shown at 26. In the case of a roof having a relatively steep slope, such as is shown in Figure 5' a supporting device is employed of the same general type as in Figure 4, but wherein the downwardly-bowed notched portion, shown at It is located intthe intermediate portion of the strap member and wherein the end portions of the strap member are at an obtuse angle to each other. The head 24' of the supporting bar 24 is also bent at an I obtuse angle to the vertical depending portion of bar 24, as shown at 21, so that said vertical depending portion may interlock with a notch I! in the bottom edge of the bowed portion I 6. It will be further noted that in Figure 5, the outer end portion of the main strap member is angularly bent with respect to the inner end portion so as to be substantially horizontal, whereby the saddle I3 will support a gutter in the required horizontal position underlying the end shingle of the roof.
As shown in Figure 6, the saddle member, designated at [3, may be formed to receive a gutter of right-angled cross-sectional contour instead of round contour. The saddle member [3 is provided with a downwardly-bent, inner lug l4 similar to that employed in saddle member l3.
While certain specific embodiments of guttersupporting brackets have been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that variousmodifications within the spirit, of the inventiorr mayv occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
