ATTACHING CLIP FOR ROOF GUTTERS Filed Dec. 5, 1938 F7624. F/GJ.

Application December 5, 1938, Serial No. 243,929" I 4Claims. (01.24 43) I v i The objectof my invention is to provide an improved roof gutter. More especially; my device relates to an' impr'oved cup for attac'hingone edge of the gutter to the gutter hanger circle or other support.
More specifically, this improved clip consists of a resilient, semi-cylindrical portion adapted to engage the curved edge of the gutter, said clip having a perforation through it through which a portion of the gutter hanger circle extends, there being on the clip adjacentthe lowest part of said perforation a curved wall adapted to em brace a portion of a cutter, hanger circle or other support adjacent that portion which passes through the perforation in the clip.
For a further exposition of my invention, referonce may be had to the annexed drawing and specification at the end thereof my invention will be specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation with parts omitted and the gutter shown in. vertical cross-section.
Fig. 2 is a rearelevation of the clip.
Fig. '3 shows the clip in perspective. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a modification.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing a second modification. 7
In that embodiment of my invention chosen from among others for illustration in. the draw-' ing and description in the specification, my device is shown as consisting of a hanger 1 shown as a channel section having perforations 2 therein. Any means for attaching this hanger to the roof or other building structure may. be employed and are not illustrated as they are well known. Supported on hanger is a gutter hanger circle 3 having perforations 4 therein.
some of which are arranged to register with the perforations 2 so that fastening means 5, shown as screws, pass through the perforations 2 and 4 which are in register and thereby secure the circle 3 to the hanger I. At its outer end, circle .3 carries a hook '5 whose purpose will be more fully described; and; at its inner end, circle 3 carries a hook end 1 beneath which the inner edge 8 of the gutter 9 is adapted to be located. Gutter 9 has its outer edge in rolled, beaded or otherwise formed with a curved reinforcement.
There is provided a clip generally indicated at H for securing the outer edge of the gutter 9 to the outer end of the circle 3. Clip H includes a semi-cylindrical, curved portion indicated at l2 and adapted to beplaced over the edge ll) of gutter 9 by being snapped thereon or placed thereon. 1 in "any other convenient manner. Through-clip H extends til-perforation 13 having a portion extending-up into-the semicylindrica'1 portion 12 and a 'portionfextending down into the depending portion M of clip II. Adjacent the loWerend of perforation l3 and formed from the walls of depending portion I4 there is provided a curved ridge or extension [5 of suitable shape, as seen in Fig. 1, to underlie the upper portion of hook 6 and to closely and elastically or resiliently embrace the adjacent edge of circle 3. Clip II thus provides a resilient but firm and closely fitting means for attaching gutter 9 and gutter hanger circle 3 firmly together despite minor variations in the relative positions of these parts. I l
In operation, the hanger l is secured to the building structure in any convenient location.
Clip H is then placed in a horizontal position and nose l5 slipped up under hook 6. Clip H is then turned from the horizontal to a nearly vertical position so that the portion I2 snaps over the edge 89 of gutter 9, thus firmly holding gutter 9 and circle 3 together.
Fig. 4 shows a modification of my device in which the clip I! is provided at the rear or upper edge of the semicylindrical curved portion with a reversely bent flange or edge l6 which facilitates placing the clip over the rolled edge of the gutter.
Fig. 5 shows a second modification of my de vice in which the clip H is provided at the rear or upper edge of the semi-cylindrical curved portion with a roll or bead i! which serves to reinforcethe clip.
Although gutter or eaves trough 9 has been shown as of the square type, it may be of the curved semi-circular or semi-cylindrical type or' of any other convenient configuration.
The clip H may be made from sheet metal, strip or sheet steel, spring steel, copper, bronze or the like.
I do not intend to be limited save asv the scope of the prior art and of the attached claims may require.
I claim:
1. A preformed, metal clip for attaching a gutter anda gutter hanger circle. together, said clip comprising, a semicylindrical portion extending in circumference more than a half circle and adapted to be snapped onto the gutter edge without permanent deformation, a dependent portion joined to said semicylindrical portion by a sharp bend providing a shoulder adapted to engage the lower side of a gutter, said clip having a perforation through both said portions large enough to permit the end of a gutter hanger circle to extend therethrough and to allow the clip to pivot on the gutter hanger circle when snapping into place, and a ridge beneath said perforation formed from said dependent portion and adapted to engage the adjacent edge of a gutter hanger circle.
2. A preformed, metal clip for use with roof gutters and gutter hanger circles comprising, a curved resilient portion adapted to snap over the edge of a gutter and to secure the clip to said gutter, a reversely bent projecting flange extending from one edge of said portion to guide the clip into proper engagement with the'edge of said gutter, and a depending portion extending from the opposite edge of said curved resilient portion having a ridge extending out of the plane of the depending portion and adapted to embrace one edge of a gutter hanger circle.
3. A preformed, metal clip for use with roof gutters and gutter hanger circles comprising, a curved resilient portion adapted to snap over the edge of a gutter and to secure the clip to said gutter, a roll formed of the metal of said clip at one edge of said portion reversely bent to provide a reinforcement of said edge, and a depending portion extending from the opposite edge of said curved resilient portion and having a ridge extendingout of the plane .thereof and adapted to embrace one edge of a gutter hanger circle.
4. A preformed, metal clip for use with roof gutters and gutter hanger circles comprising, a curved resilient portion adapted to snap over the edge of a gutter and to secure the clip to said gutter, and a dependent portion joined to said curved resilient portion by a sharp bend providing a shoulder adapted to engage the lower side of a gutter, said clip having a perforation through both said portions large enough to permit the end of a gutter hanger circle to extend therethrough and to allow the clip to pivot on the gutter hanger circle when snapping into place.
