CUTTER FOR LEATHER-WHITENING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,497, dated June 13, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN E. CLEMENT, of Peabody, Essex county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Gutter for Leather-Whitening Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 1
The invention consists in the combination, with a cylinder of a length slightly more than its diameter and provided with V shaped grooves, of V-shaped cutters provided with spiral wings and secured in the grooves of the cylinder by strips of soft metal, as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a transverse section of a cutterhead provided with theimproved knives. Fig. 2 is an edge view, and Fig.3 a side view, of one knife or cutter; and Fig. 4. is a plan view, showing the relative position and arran gemcnt of the cutters on the head.
A is the cutter-head, which is a cylinder of a length slightly more than its diameter, and B are the cutters, set in grooves formed in the head, and held securely by strips of soft metal (shown at a) calked or forcedinto the grooves after the cutters are inesrted.
The cutters B are thin blades of metal bent in V form, and with each wing 11 formed as a spiral on a pitch equal, or nearly so, to the length of the cylinder. The points or angles of the double cutters are at the mid-length of 3 5 the head A, and the wings are of a length to extend to the ends of the head at each side.
The cutters, formed and arranged as described, act on the leather with a shearing cut from the center line outward in both directions, the fiber being thereby cut in two directions, and the operation is similar to slicker-whitening as done by hand. The strain or draft on the leather is in both directions, the wings at one side acting against those at the other side. There is no movement of the leather to either side, and it is retained on the bed-plate. Further, the cutters will not crease or plait the leather, and the liability of holes being cut is thus avoided.
The cutters, constructed as described, are self-bracing and not liable to bend or to break.
