This invention relates to a holder for toilet tissue dispensing rolls and has for its primary object to provide a holder which completely shields the dispensing roll, which is relatively simple in .design and construction, which is inexpensive and which can be fabricated of attractive plastic materials.

Another important object of this inventionis to provide a toilet paper holder of the character described which is of such construction as to make it relatively easy to assemble and disassemble the various parts thereof and to replace the dispensing roll when necessary.

An important feature of this invention resides in the provision of a stationary housing which can be secured to a supporting wall and an arcuate housing pivoted thereto, the two housings cooperating, when in a closed position, to completely shield the toilet tissue dispensing roll. The movable housing is, therefore, ineffect a door which is vertically hinged to the stationary housing and which is further provided with a novel snap resilient means for se1ectively retaining the housing in an open and closed position.

Another feature of this invention resides in the provision of a longitudinal, forwardly curved lip on the bottom free edge of the pivoted door which cooperates with the free edge of the bottom wall of the stationary housing to provide a longitudinal dispensing slot for receiving a sheet of toilet tissue, the lip serving the dual function of a cutting edge and a finger engaging means for raising the pivoted door to an open position when desired.

These, together with various ancillary features and objects of the invention, which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the present invention, a preferred embodiment of which has been illus trated, by way of example only, in the [accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now more specifically to the accom panying drawings, wherein like numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, the device is generally indicated at In and includes a first housing l2 which is stationary in the sense that it is secured to a supporting structure and a second housing I4 which is movable in'th'e sense that it is hinged to the first housing and constitutes a door, the two housings cooperating when in a closed position to completely shield a toilet tissue dispensing roller it retained in the housings. The second or movable housing It includes an arcuate wall 34 interconnecting, longitudinally spaced side walls or members 36.

A means is provided for pivotally interconnecting the movable housing M to the fixed housing l2 for movement of the former housing in a ver- "cal plane, which means comprises a forwardly and laterally extending longitudinal, arcuate tongue 38 at the forward free edge of the top wall 28 and an arcuate longitudinally extending groove 40 provided in the upper free edge of the arcuate wall 3&- of the second housing M, which groove also extends through the side members 36 of the second housing M, as will be apparent with reference to the drawings. The tongue 38 is journaled in the groove 40, as will be readily apparent.

The two housings are held together by a snap resilient means designed to selectively retain the second housing M in an open and closed position relative to the first housing. This means includes a first transversely extending recess 42, cut centrally into the undersurface of the top wall 28 of the first housing, the recess terminating to the rear of the arcuate tongue 38 to 40 to provide a second shoulder 48. 52 and 54 which are anchored in the transverse and aligned recesses 42 and 45 by engagement with the shoulders 44 and 48, respectively, as shown clearly in Figures 3 and 5. Thus, when the front housing or door [4 is moved upwardly to the dotted line position shown in Figure 3, the spring 50 will bend medially and engage and abut the interconnected tongue and

Secured by any suitable means to the inner surfaces of the opposed side wallsZd and 26 of the fixed housing 12, is a pair of longitudinally aligned, open-ended arcuate bearings 58 which removably receive the free ends of a longitudinally extending, preferably plastic tube 58 which is loosely journaled through the conventional cardboard inner sleeve Gil of the toilet tissue dispensing roll 19. Disks El are received on the ends or the tube between the sides of the dispensing roll and the hearings to prevent injury to the sides of the dispensing roll. It will be readily understood that this arrangement simplifies the necessary manipulation for removal and replacement of a toilet tissue dispensing roll in the present holder.

As will readily be apparent with reference to drawings, the bottom edges of the side walls 35 of the movable housing or cover Id are provided with forwardly and downwardly inclined bevelled edges 52 and the bottom free edge of the arcuate wall 3 3 is provided with a forwardly and downwardly inclined lip 64 which is contiguous with the bevelled edges 62. Thus, when the movable housing or door H1 is urged to the closed position, whereby the vertical free edges 65 and 68 of the side walls, 26, 26 and 35, respectively, engage a lower dispensing slot ill is produced for receiving a sheet F2 from the toilet tissue dispensing roll it. The inclined lip 64 serves the dual function of providing a cutting edge for the sheet 72 and a finger engaging means for raising the movable housing or door 14 to the open position.

From the foregoing, the construction and op eration of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A toilet tissue holder comprising a first substantially rectangular housing having rear, side and longitudinal top and bottom walls, fasteners extending through said rear wall for securing said rear wall to a supporting structure, a second housing having a front elongated arcuate wall and side members, means for pivotally securing said arcuate wall to said top wall for swinging movement in a vertical plane, snap resilient means for selectively retaining said second housing in an open and closed position, and bearings mounted in said housing for retaining a toilet tissue dispensing roll in said first housing.

2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said pivotally securing means includes an arcuate laterally extending tongue carried at the longitudinal free edge of said top wall and an arcuate longitudinal groove through the free upper edge of said arcuate wall receiving said tongue.

3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said snap resilient means includes a first transverse recess through the undersurface of said top wall and terminating to the rear of said arcuate tongue, a second transverse recess in transverse alignment with said first recess through the undersurface of said arcuate wall and terminating short of said longitudinal groove, and an arcuate leaf spring intersecting said tongue and groove and having inturned terminal lips anchored in said transverse recesses.

4. A toilet tissue dispenser comprising a rectangular housing having a rear wall, side walls, top and bottom walls and an open front, a 010- sure covering said open front, said closure being of substantially semi-cylindrical shape and having flat side walls and an arcuate wall, the edges of said closure walls normally abutting the corresponding edges of said housing top, bottom and side walls, snap resilient means securing the top edge of said housing to the abutting edge of said closure arcuate wall, a lip on the edge of said are-uate wall abutting the bottom wall of the housing, said snap resilient means biasing said lip against said bottom wall and said lip constituting a handle member for said closure and a cutting edge for said dispenser.

5. The combination of claim 4, wherein the top wall of said housing has an arcuately tongued edge extending therefrom and the abutting arcuate wall closure edge has a groove therein receiving said tongued edge.

6. The combination of claim 4, wherein bearing members are mounted on the inner walls of said side walls of said housing and a tube is seated on said bearing members.

7. The combination of claim 6, including a pair of discs J'ournaled on the ends of the tube to prevent injury to a dispensing roll supported on said tube. I
