This invention relates to a memorandum appliance and has for its primary object to provide an appliance particularly for use in scoring at games such as bridge in which, when the matter 'on a writing surface is no longer required the said writing surface can be replaced by a fresh writing surface or area. A further object is to provide an appliance which can be placed conveniently on a card table or other surface and which also can be utilised as a container for articles such as packs of cards, pencils, and/or include or be formed with a smokers ash receptacle.

For a ready understanding of the invention reference will now be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings, illustrative of preferred embodiments of the invention.

Referring'first to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, the inner part comprises a wedge or triangular shaped base member I, arranged so that the upper surface. 2 thereof is inclined providing a writing surface 3. The rear or thick end 4 is formed with a substantially semi-cylindrical recess 5 to contain therein a roll of paper 6, the axis of the roll being disposed transversely of the base. The upper or writing surface is marked in a manner suitable for the purpose for which the appliance is intended. Conveniently, and as shown, if thesaid appliance is for use in scoring at bridge, a sheet of printed material! is secured to the upper surface orthe printed matter impressed directly on said surface.

The cover 8 (Fig. 3) includes side walls 9, 9 each of triangular shape with a rectangular rear portion l0, ID. The upper edges of the said rear portions may slope slightly in the direction of the wedge as shown. The said side walls 9, 9 are united by a top surface H which comprises a frame consisting of two side strips Ila, a cross strip at the bottom llb, i. e., thin end, and a cross strip I la at the top of the triangular portions. Thus the rectangular portions extend beyond the writing surface. An inturned flange l2, I2 is provided at the bottom edge of each side wall and the wedge portion is inserted in the cover from the rear and being secured in place by screws or the like which'pass through the flange into the wedge portion. The bottom of said wedge may extend rearwardly tothe rear of the rectangular portions as shown, forming a continuous base, and a strip of felt l3 secured thereto.

An ash receptacle is retained between said rectangular portions Ill, l0, said receptacle conveniently comprising a box-like member 'I 4, of dimensions to fit snugly in the space at the rear of the appliance.' Each said portion ID has a slot l5 extending fromthe top wall downwardly and the ash receptacle is provided with an undercut lug l6 at each side, each lug engaging in a slot to secure the receptacle in position. The upper edge of the receptacle is formed with an inturned flange IT at each side, said flanges terminating short of the rear edge of the receptacle. The lid for the receptaclei'comprises a'rectangular frame l8, and'from-the' 'rearedge of said frame there extends, forwardly and downwardly a platform l9. The arrangement is such that the platform l9 enters the space between the flanges l1 and the rear wall of the receptacle and normally the frame rests onthe upper surface of the receptacle and completely closingsame as shown in Fig. 1. Ash or cigarette stubs'dropped on the platform are caused to enter the receptacle by sliding the frame rearwardly, the contact between the platform and rear edge of thereceptacle causing the whole sliding lid to tilt upwardly. On release the lid drops to its normal position. The front of the lid and the rear of the cross member of the cover frame adjacent'thereto have upstanding projections 20 formed to retain a cigarette.

In order to loadthe scoring appliance the ash receptacle is completely removed giving access to the recess 5 in the wedge shaped portion. The roll 6 is then inserted and the end is passed betweenthe rear of the upper surface I on the wedge and the upper cross member He of the frame, and the paper is drawn over the printed surface and out from between the thin end of the wedge and front cross member llb'. To facilitate the insertion of the paper the upper surface of the wedge at its rear end is constituted only by the flexible strip or sheet I. Said strip is secured to the upper surface and carries the printing thereon, the rear portion extending up to the ash receptacle, while the upper surface of the wedge proper terminates some distance short of the said receptacle. The flexible strip may be bent to facilitate the insertion of the paper.

In the alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 6 the side extensions ID are semi-circular instead of rectangular with the curved edges facing rearwardly. The ash receptacle I4 is shaped correspondingly and has a vertical front wall 2| disposed to close the recess in the wedge, and a curved rear wall 22 which extends from the bottom upwardly to about one half or more of the side walls. The receptacle is retained in position in the manner mentioned above and the vertical front wall serves to retain the roll of paper in its recess. The lid comprises a vertical frame 23 which pivots on the upper edge of the vertical front wall. The said frame 23 extends downwardly for about one half the wall with which it is normally contiguous. A platform 24 extends upwardly from the bottom edge of said frame and over the rear wall terminating in a curved downward extension 25 which resides over the curved rear wall 22 of the container.

A stub or ash on the platform 24 which closes the receptacle, is caused to drop by swinging a projecting portion 20 of the vertical wall forwardly so that the curved extension and platform swing upwardly as shown in broken line-s.

It will be understood that any suitable ash receptacle may be provided. Further the appliance may terminate at the rear ends of the triangular side portions, in which case a detachable rear wall will be provided or the cover and wedge arranged to separate by a sliding or pivoting connection between the two parts.

A pivoting arrangement is illustrated in Figure '7. The wedge l is pivoted at 26, at its lower edge at each side and towards the rear thereof, to the corresponding point on the side wall of the cover. The two parts are opened as shown in broken lines.

With the paper in position as shown in Fig. 2 the score is kept in the usual manner and at the end of the rubber the paper sheet which is as transparent as possible, is drawn from the appliance until a clean area is over the sheet I. The withdrawn portion is then torn off and may be kept for checking purposes if necessary.

We claim:

1. In a memorandum pad assembly, a wedgeshaped body having an inclined writing surface and provided at its broad end with a recess adapt.- ed to receive a roll of paper, and a cover having parallel triangular side walls corresponding to the sides of said body and further having a top face joining the inclined edges of said side walls and provided with a central window, said side walls being provided on their bottom edges with inturned flanges directed toward each other, said cover being adapted to receive said body and said flanges being adapted to hold said cover on said body.

2. In a memorandum pad assembly, a wedgeshaped body having an inclined writing surface and provided at its broad end with a recess adapted to receive a roll of paper, a cover having parallel triangular side walls corresponding to the sides of said body and further having a top face joining the inclined edges of said side Walls and provided with a central window, and pivot means projecting laterally from the bottom edges of said body adjacent the broad end thereof and engaging registering apertures formed in the side walls of said cover for pivotally attaching said cover to said body, said cover being adapted to receive said body.

3. Ina memorandum pad assembly, a wedgeshaped body having an inclined writing surface and provided at its broad end with a recess adapted to receive a roll of paper, a cover having parallel triangular side walls which correspond to the sides of said body and which project rearwardly beyond the broad end of said body, said cover further having a top face joining the inclined edges of said side walls and provided with a central window, and closure means mounted between said rear projections of said side walls for closing said recess and retaining said roll therein.

4. An assembly according to claim 3, the upper edge of said projections of said side walls being provided with slots, and said closure means being provided with lateral lugs adapted to engage in said slots for locking said closure means in said projections of said side walls.

5. In a memorandum pad assembly, a wedgeshaped body having an inclined writing surface and provided at its broad end with a recess adapted to receive a roll of paper, and a cover having parallel triangular side walls corresponding to the sides of said body and further having a top face joining the inclined edges of said side walls and provided with a central window, said covering being adapted to receive said body, and said side walls being provided on their bottom edges with means for retaining said body in position within said cover.

6. In a memorandum pad assembly, a wedgeshaped body having an inclined writing surface and provided at its broad end with a recess adapted to receive a roll of paper, a cover having parallel triangular side walls which correspond to the sides of said body, said cover further having a top face joining the inclined edges of said side walls and provided with a central window, and closure means mounted between said side walls for closing said recess and retaining said roll therein.

7. An assembly according to claim 6, and retaining means displaceably pivotally mounted on thetop of the broad end ofsaid cover for retaining said closure means in closing position.

8. An assembly according to claim 6, and pivot means projecting laterally from the bottom edges of said body adjacent the broad end thereof and engaging registering apertures formed in the side walls of said cover for pivotally attaching said cover to said body, said cover being adapted to receive said body.
