Description

March 14, 1950 E. LANKFORD, JR TOILET PAPER DISPENSER Filed July 8) 1946 Inventor Patented Mar. 14, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOILET PAPER DISPENSER Eugene Lankford, J12, Austin, Tex.
Application July 8, 1946, Serial N 0. 681,873
This invention relates to improvements in toilet paper dispensers.
An object of the invention is to provide an im proved toilet paper dispenser which will be positioned within an opening in a wall to receive and dispense a roll of toilet paper.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved toilet paper dispenser for bathrooms which will be adapted to be positioned within an opening in the bathroom wall, and to be provided with a pivoted door which may be opened when a new roll of paper is to b installed in the dispenser.
Another object of the invention is to provide an proved toilet paper dispenser for bathrooms which will comprise a housing adapted to be received in an opening in a bathroom wall, together with a pivoted front door and means for supporting a roll of toilet paper therein, with resilient tensioning means therefor.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved toilet paper dispenser comprising a housing adapted to be inserted within a wall opening, together with a pivoted door therefor having resilient locking means, and a serrated toothed cutter blade on the lower edge of said door whereby the toilet paper as it passes from said housing may be torn off by drawing the same into contact with said serrated teeth.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of toilet paper dispenser which will be highly eflicient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved toilet paper dispenser shown in position within a wall;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a detailed sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings, a bathroom wall generally designated by the reference numeral I, through which an opening 2 will be 55 1 Claim. (Cl. 24255.5)
formed in which the improved toilet paper dispenser generally designated by the reference numeral 3 will be received.
The toilet paper dispenser 3 will include a housing 4 generally U-shape in cross-section which will be provided with the oppositely disposed and oppositely extending attaching flanges '5 adapted to overlie the upper and lower edges of the wall I respectively, when the housing 4 is inserted within the opening 2 within said wall. The screws 7 will extend through suitable apertures in the attaching flanges 5 and 6 and will be secured in the said wall I for holding the housing 4 in fixed position therein.
The door or closure member 8 will be formed at its lower edge with the oppositely disposed depending ears 9 and I9 which will be pivotally supported upon the pins ll suitably supported by the opposite ends of the housing l, whereby the door may be swung downwardly on its hinge at the lower edge thereof, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, when it is desired to replace a roll of toilet paper l2 within the dispenser housing.
The upper end of the door will be thickened as at l3, and will be recessed as at M to receive the coil springs l5 which will engage the ball bearings It for forcing the same into a groove I! in the upper surface of said housing 4 to serve as a latch for locking the door when in closed position.
A flange ill will be formed along the upper edge of the door 8, while the lower edge of the door is curved outwardly, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, and is slightly elevated above the lower surface of the housing 4 to permit the toilet paper l2 to pass below the door. The lower edge of the door 8 is formed with the arcuate cutting jaw l8 along which the serrated cutting teeth 3|) are formed whereby when the toilet paper is pulled from the roll and pulled upwardly the cutting teeth 30 will cause the paper to be cut from the roll.
The shade roller bracket type hangers 20 are secured to the opposite ends of the housing 4 to support the roll of toilet paper upon a suitable roller (not shown), while a depending resilient tensioning arm 2| is supported by the rib 22 formed along the undersurface of the top of the housing 4 so that the tensioning arm 2| may contact the outer surface of the roll of toilet paper I2 while the end of the paper is being torn along the serrated cutter teeth 30.
The hangers 20 are provided with recesses 3| for receiving the ends of a roller or shaft for a roll of toilet paper. Slots 32 are also formed in the hangers 20 and extend to the recesses 3| so that the ends of a roller may be received in the recesses 3|. Spring members 33 carried by the hangers 26 will yieldingly retain the ends of a roller in the recesses 3|.
The arcuate finger engaging seat 23 will be formed in the forward and lower portion of the upper attaching flange 5, whereby the fingernail or the edge of the finger may be inserted in the seat for pulling the upper end of the door closure 8 away from the housing 4 and against the action of the resiliently tensioned ball bearing latch when it is desired to opened the door.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised a highly eiiicient form of toilet paper dispenser, which will be concealed within a wall opening in a bathroom, and which will be provided with means for detachably supporting a roll of toilet paper therein, and additional means for tensioning the paper while the loose end thereof. is being drawn out and cut from the roll.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope ofthe invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to Without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by- Letters Patent of the United States is:
A dispenser for rolled paper comprising a housing placeable in a recess in a wall surface, and having a substantially rectangular open end, a peripheral flange at the open end of said housing having fastener receiving apertures provided for securing the same against the outer face of a wall, a substantially rectangular closure hinged at one edge to said housing, said peripheral flange having a recess for normally engaging the edges of said closure, the outer face of said closure being coplanar with the outer face of said peripheral flange, a spring seat provided on the inner face of said closure, a spring urged locking ball positioned in said seat,,a recess provided in said housing adjacent its open end for lockably engaging said ball to retain said closure in a normally closed position, means mounted within said housing for supporting a roll of paper, a support rib fixed in said housing, a resilient arm fixed at one end to said rib, the free end of said arm frictionally engaging a roll of paper mounted in said housing to prevent unravelling of the latter, said closure having an arcuate cutting jaw integrally formed therewith, said jaw having a free longitudinal edge and cutter teeth carried by the free edge of said jaw.
