DRINKING CUP Filed Oct. 12. 1949 IZZY/72107 [6526)" 215 440 Patented Mar. 18, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DRINKING CUP Lester T. Sawyer, Leominster, Mass.
Application October 12, 1949, Serial No. 120,907
1 Claim.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a drinking cup for babies and young children which is not only relatively stable but also unbreakable and capable of being quickly and conveniently cleaned and which is so designed as to minimize, if not avoid, the likelihood of being accidentally tipped over. Further objects will be apparent from consideration of the following description and the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved drinking cup;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cup member; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the base cup.
The embodiment herein shown for the purpose of illustration comprises a cup member I of generally cylindrical shape and formed at its upper end with a drinking lip 2. The body or at least the lower part of the cup member is slightly tapered as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. The cup member is made of a resilient and flexible plastic material, such as a polyethylene resin, at plasticized vinyl polymer, nylon, or the like which is relatively fracture-proof and yet flexible and resilient.
The base member 5 consists of a dish-like structure having a central upstanding annular flange 6 defining a circular recess having a slight taper so as to receive the lower end of the cup member with a slight pressed fit. A peripheral flange 8 of arcuate cross section extends beyond the body of the base member and not only provides a stabilizing element, but also a drip-receiver.
The base member is preferably of a plastic material which may be the same as or similar to that of the cup member so that the flange 6 While I have shown and described one desired embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that this disclosure is 'for the purpose of illustration and that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
A childs drinking cup comprising a cup member formed of resilient, flexible polyethylene, the lower part of which has a taper capable of undergoing a slight radial compression, and a base member of relatively rigid plastic material having an upstanding central annular flange for receiving and radially compressing the tapered part of said cup member, the cup member being releasable by squeezing its side wall, and a peripheral flange of arcuate cross-section projecting from said base member so as to provide a combination drip receiver and stabilizing element.
LESTER T. SAWYER.
