UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO OHAPPEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION-EASEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,990, dated June 6, 1882. Application filed october s, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALONZO CHAPPEL, of Brooklyn, in the county ot Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combination-Easel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specitication.
My invention consists of a parlor or drawing-room piece combining an easel, drawing board or table, portfolio, anddrawers; of a novel means of securing the' canvas or drawing-paper to the drawing-board or easel without the use of thumb-tacks, and of novel means for supporting mounted canvas or paper or other foundation of the picture upon the easel. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation'of my combination -easel as it appears when folded up. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line y y of Fig. 3, the easel being raised topo'sition for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line m a' of Fig. l, looking toward-the rear of the easel. Fig.. '4 is an edge view of Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the easel or drawing-board, showing my improved means of holding the .canvas or drawing-paper; and Fig. 6 is an edge or top view of the same.
The frame of the easel is composed ot' the uprights A and A', tied together near theirL lower ends by the cross-piece B and at their by the hinged door f, which may be provided with lock and key. Between the upper side of the portfolio and the bottom of the shallow `box D is placed the drawerG, which is divided' into several compartments, as shown in Figs.
2 and 3, for holding the artists outfit of paints,
brushes, pencils, 85o., when no t` in use, and this drawer may also be provided with lock and key.
rlhe easelwhen raised for use, is held in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 2, by means of the jointed braces a a, which are hinged to the easel and bottom board of the shallow box D in such manner that they are adapted to fold back into the box D and permit the easel to be lowered upon the edge ot' the box to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1.
In using the easel with mounted canvas or paper, orgother foundation or material for the picture, the frame or mounting is held upon the easelt by means of the cramp-plates d d, which tit upon the edges of the easel, as shown in Figs..2 and 4; and for holding drawing-paper or other unmounted foundation I provide the cross-bars c c and the screw-clamps g g, which tit over the ends of the cross-bars and the edges ot' the easel and clamp the paper or canvas, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
When not in use the clamps, cross-bars, and cramp-plates can be placed in the shallow receptacle or box D.
Thus constructed the device is very convenient and ornamental to the drawing-room or parlor, and occupies small space.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t- 1. The combination, with the shallow box D on the frame A A B, of the hinged easel E, having the hinged braces a, the. cross-bars c, the cramp-plates d, and the clamps "g, arranged as shown and described.
2. In combination with the hinged easel E and the' receptacle D, the portfolio F and drawerG, substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth..
p ALONZO GHAPPEL.
