UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. BREARLEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
ORGAN-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,983, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed January 26, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H.BREARLEY, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented ncwand useful Improvements in Combined Organ and Desk; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of what are usually denominated as reed or cabinet organs, by means of which the space within the top is utilized as a writing-desk, containing the usual depositories for inkstand, paper, envelopes, and the usual conveniences for writing, and, if desired, shelves or compartments for keeping sheet-music.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement. and combination of pat ts, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a front elevation. vertical central section.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body or lower chamber of the instrument, which contains the bellows, reed-boards, stop, and pedal connections, and B the keyboard, all of the usual construction.
0 is a slide adapted to run in grooves or other suitable devices (not shown) in or attached to the inner sides of the end walls of the organ. This slide is situated at the top of said chamber, just above the key-board, and is made of two pieces, hinged together, so that when withdrawn the front piece will form an Fig. 2 is a inclined cover to the key-board. When it is desired to disclose the key-board this front piece is elevated to the plane of the rear piece, to which itis hinged, and the whole slide shoved rearward into the body of theinstrument, thereby forming a top or roof to the chamber A.
The upper chamber, D, is provided with a front, E, hinged at its lower edge to the instrument above the slide O, and adapted, when opened from the top and resting upon the front edge of the slide when this is performing the function of a cover for the key-board, to form an inclined writing-table. When this front E is thus opened it discloses the chamber D, which may be divided into compartments, divided from each other by shelves, or provided with drawers, as is usual in writing-desks with falling fronts.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A cabinet-organ provided with guides for the reception of the slide 0, which is made in two parts hinged together, substantially in the manner described, whereby both parts may be pushed into the guides in the body of the organ-case, entirely out of sight, by first raising the front part of the slide to a horizontal position, as set forth.
2. In a combined cabinet-organ and writingdesk, the hinged front E and sliding hinged portion 0, combined and adapted to serve as and for the purposes set forth.
\V. H. BREARLEY.
