LAMP-BURNER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,758, dated May 30, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. HORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being bad to the accom pan yin g drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in oil-lamp burners, the object of which is to provide a burner with the means of readily and conveniently reducing the light without the emission of smoke or an oiiensive odor. I attain these qualificationsin a lamp burner by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation, showing an ordinary lamp-burner with my improvement added, which consists in the hood F. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, showing how said hood may be attached so as to be easily adjusted. Fig. 3 is an elevatiompartly sec.- tional, and showing about the same as Fig. 2, except from a different standpoint. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hood and the rod upon which it is mounted and by which it is operated.

. A in Fig. 1 refers to an ordinary lam p-buruer provided with the usual screw for attaching to the oil-reservoir a wick-tube, a vent or gas tube, a thimble, 850.

F in Fig. 1 refers to a hood so formed as to cover a part of the wick and all of the venttube, so that any gas which may be generated about the wick or that may pass from the vent-tube will be collected by it, (the hood.) In short, the hood serves as a sort of gasometer over the vent-tube and such part of the wick as is desired to be extinguished. Hood F has a portion of its length cut away, as

shown at F, which cut-away portion may be at either end or in the middle, as desired, thus allowinga part ofthe wick to remain uncovered and burning, as a consequence of which the gas which would otherwise escape into the apartment will be consumed at thatpoint. Therod which operates the hood may be placed either above or below the perforated disk, as desired. The dotted line in Fig. 1 shows the hood thrown overthe wick. F in Fig. irshows the cut-away at one end of the hood. G in Fig. 2 shows the rod to which said hood is suitably attached. G in Fig. 2 shows the button upon rod G, by which the hood is operated. Bod G is given an endwise motion, so that more or less of the wick may be allowed to remain burning to suit the operator. In some instances it may be desirable to give the hood 3. double motion-Jorward and downward in throwing on, and upward and back in throwing off. It will be seen thatthe hood is thrown over without turning the wick down.

What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the wick-tube of a lamp-burner, an adjustable hood having in its upper end a chamber, which extends over a portion only of the wick in the direction of its greatest diameter for collecting the gas and directing it to any portion of the wick which is left burning, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, in a lamp-burner, of an adjustable hood having in its upper end a chamber which extends over a portion only of the wickin the direction of its greatestdiameter for collecting the gas and directing it to any portion of the wick which is left burning, a wick-tube, and a gas-tube for conducting any gas that may be generated in the lamp to the chamber in the hood, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
