Description
B. L. AGNEW.
Fraser-.ving Jar.
Patented ct.v 18. 1859.
UNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
d3. L. AGNEV, OF INDIANA, PA., ASSIGNOR TO Gr. P. REED, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESERVE-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,863, dated October li, 15:39.
T0 rLZ, whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, .BENJAMIN L. AGNEW, of Indiana, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in'Preserve-Cans; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a preserve-jar constructed with an inner rim or iiange of less depth than the outer rim or iange, forming the mouth proper of the jar, whereby the V-groove between the two flanges or rims, and also the entire top ofthe stopper or cork, can be supplied with cement in a manner to render the jar perfectly air-tight, and also render impossible Athe detaching or breaking off the' cement. Y
I am aware that many inventions havebeen essayed in which melted wax and rosin or somev similar mixture for pouring upon and covering the month of the jar have been used; also, that caps requiring cement to seal them to the top of the jar have been in common use; but in every insta-nce, so far as I am aware, the above-named devices have proved ineffectual,
and the' cost attending their construction ren- -ders their introduction very slow.
The jar I propose may be manufactured of stoneware, tin, glass, or qnecnsware formed as herein described, namely: The mouth ofthe jar, being made of any convenient size,is formed with an annular V -shaped cavity or receptacle, B, between the fiaring portion of the neck E and a ange, C. This iiange C is made with and forms part of the jar. The V-shaped cavity is formed torretain the cement in the inonth of the jar.
As shown clearly in Figure 2, A is a conicalshaped stopper, formed to fit closely within the rim or iiange C, and, when fitted toits place for use, is formed to project slightly above the rim C, as represented. Fruit being prepared in the ordinary manner and placed within the jar, the stopper A will be tted closely in its place, and cement will be poured into the cavity B untilrbtlie top ofthe stopper A is fully covered, thereby rendering the jar perfectly air-tight.
, That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination,in a preserve-janet a deep outer iiange or rim, E, with a shallow inner flange, B, in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand.
P). L. AGNEV.
