UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.V y
EDWARD O. FORD, OF LAUREL, MARYLAND.
HANGER FOR PLUMBERS PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,638, dated May 30, 1882.
Application tiled Aprill, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. FORD, of Laurel, Prince Georges county, Maryland, have invented a new and useful Hanger- Bracket for the Support of Water and Gas Pipes below the Ceiling of an Apartment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.
Until recently it was customary' to couceal the water-pipes under the floors or in the walls to the greatest extentpossible, and when not concealed they were fastened against the ceiling or wall. The modern practice is to leave such pipes exposed and accessible to the greatest possible extent; and by this invention I propose to provide means for the suspension of such pipes clear of the wall or ceiling, whereby the pipes are not only rendered freely accessible for repairs, but may be easily and thoroughly cleaned, and no longer become restingplaces for dust or harbor for vermin.
That others may fully understand my invention, I will more particularly describe it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whereinl Figure 1. is a perspective view of my bracket. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same, showing also a lateral adjustment of the eX- terior hooks. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. t is a side elevation, which merely illustrates the variety of design which may be employed without departing from the invention.
I have been informed that plumbers usually group three pipes, and for that reason I represent a bracket provided with saddles for three pipes. The number can be increased or diminished, however, and the bracket provid ed with any number desired.
A is a plate which is attached to the wall or ceiling, and a common Diode of attachment is shown in Fig. 2, where B B represent the lath, and C the plastering. The p0- sition and direction of the pipes D is fixed without reference to the places of attachment for the bracket-screws e, and it will often be found necessary to pass these into laths B, there being no joists or studs available. I
therefore provide a plate, A, with two slots,f 5o
f, and the screw e may be placed in one part or another ot' its slot, as may be necessary to reachthe center of a lath, and thus obtain a good support.
From the plate A one or more arms, F, de scend. I prefer to employ two of said arms, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A horizontal part, G, provided with the saddles h h h, is also provided with arms corresponding with and tted to the arms F, so that they may be secured together by adjusting-screwsi e', or some equivalent device, so that the saddles h may be raised or lowered. This is desirable, because in suspending these pipes below the ceilingit is desirable to place the pipes lower at one end than at the other, so as to secure drainage. The vertical adjustment is shown by dotted lines in Fig.
It will also be necessary sometimes to vary the horizontal distances between the pipes, and therefore a horizontal adjustment will also be useful. This is shown in Figs. 2 and 4, where the outer saddles, h, are movable h0rizontally, so as to place the pipes nearer or far ther apart.
The pendent portions k of the part G is simply' forornament and to enable the plumber to placehis name, if he desires. This part may be entirely omitted, if preferred.
The structure shown in Fig." 4 may be built up 'of plumbers T-couplings, Ste., but may be more cheaply and just as efficiently cast solid in imitation of plumbers work; or'such other design may be employed as fancy or convenience may dictate.
Having described my invention, what Iclaim as new is- 1. A hanger or bracket for plumbers use, consist-ing of a plate, A, with means for attachment to the ceiling, combined with a part, G, and saddles h, horizontally adjustable, substantially as set forth.
2. A hanger or bracket for plumbers7 use, consisting ofa part, A, for attachment to the wall, and a part, G, provided with saddles h, combined with slotsf in the part A, whereby the fastening-screws e may have a lateral range of location irrespective of the location of the bracket, as and for the purpose set saddles h h, which are capable of vertical and forth. horizontal adjustment, substantially as set 3. A hanger or bracket for plumbers use, forth. consisting ofa plate, A, provided with means EDWARD C. FORD. 5 for attachment to the ceiling having a range itnessesz of lateral location irrespective of the location R. D. O. SMITH,
of the bracket, combined with a part, G, and J. C. TURNER.
