THOMAS SAMSON, OF EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, ATLANTIC COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO WM. B. ROSE, OF SAME PLAGE.
' ROPE-SLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 258,668, dated May 30, 1882.
Application led February 14, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SAMSON, of Egg Harbor township, county of Atlantic, and State of New Jersey, have invented a Rope- Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a chock for holding a taut line while it is being rendered through a block or fastened to a fixed support; and my invention has for its object the provision of an apparatus into which a line may be easily introduced and securely held while therein.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are perspective views of my improved chock; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the base-block with the clamping-jaw removed therefrom, and Figs. 4 and 5 detail views of the clamping-block and the shaft on which it works.
A represents a block of wood or casting, provided with bolts or screws at each end for fastening it to the deck of a vessel or other suitable base. The block Alias its central portion cut out, as shown, so as to leave an oblong opening, B, open at top, and having recesses a a at either end for the reception of the line. The block A has a longitudinal mortise, (l, cnt in it and extending the length of opening B, leaving side walls, b b, which are provided with openings b b for the reception of a shaft, D. The shaft D passes through the openings b b', and is held in position by a collar, d, at one end and a pin, d', at the other. That part of the shaft which is journaled in the block A is round, as shown, while its central portion is squared off to t a square hole, e, in a crescentshaped clamping-block, E. The shaft has also a squared end, di, on which a handle or lever, F, is placed.
It will be seen that .a rope or wire may be clamped between the crescent-shaped block E and either side of the oblong opening B by reversing the position of the aforesaid block B.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When it is desired to hold a line taut while the free end is being rendered through a block or otherwise manipulated the lineis pressed down into the oblong opening B and under one ot' the edges a. The handle F is then turned toward the side of the block against which the rope rests, when the end of the crescent-shaped clamping-block E will press against the rope and hold it securely until the loose end has been rendered or fastened, when the handle may be drawn back and the line released.
It will be seen that when desirable a rope may be clamped oneither side of the block by removing the handle Fand revolvingtheclamping-block E until its concave edge faces the side on which it is desired to secure the line.
I claim- The block A, having the oblong opening B and transverse slot C, in combination with the shaft D, journaled therein, and carrying the rcversible crescent-shaped clam pin g-block Eand handle F, all constructed and arranged sub` stantially as described.
O. B. OGDEN, D. W. OGDEN.
