To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY F. SMITH, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State ofPennsylvania,haveinvented eertainnewand useful Improvements in Halters or Bridles, of which the following is aspecitication, reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective of a halter embodying my invention. My invention has for its object to provide a bridle or Vhalter the various component parts of which (save thebrow-piece) are put together so as to dispense with stitching, riveting, or other similar ways of fastening, thereby producing a cheaper and superior article than has heretofore been made.

Y My invention consists of the novel combination, construction, and arrangement of the parts forming the halter or bridle.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a halter composed of chin-and-nose strap B, cheek-straps C C', and neekstrap D; and E, E', F, G, and [-I are buckles for securing said parts together.

The buckles E E are Inore plainly shown in Fig. 4, and consist of the ring part e, through which passes the chin-and-nose strap B, and the rectangular part e', in which are inserted the cheek-straps G G'. The part e is formed with a curved or straight cross-bar, e2; and e3 is a depressed bar provided with one or more studs, e4 e, and a lug, e5. Thev ring paint e is formed with an eye, e, for attachment ot' the bit to form a bridle, as shown at y, Fig. 8, and has a depressed cross-bar, e", provided with one or more studs, e8, and an enlarged projecting lip, e9, coinciding with cross-bar e2, to form a groove or recess, 61, for receiving the end of a strap and preventing it from curving by friction.

pressed bar f3, having stud or studsf4, and lug having stud or studs f7, and a lip, f3, which forms a groove or recess, f, for the insertion and protection of the end ot the neck-strap.

The buckle G (plainly illustrated in Fig. 2) is composed ot' two parts or uniting frames, g g, placed at an angle with each other.` In the part g' is inserted the remaining end of neckstrap D, and is formed with cross-bar g2, depressed bar g3, having stud or studs g4, and lu g g5. ,The part g :is provided with depressed bar gG, having lip 97, which forms a groove, y, for the insertion ot' said end of theneek-strap,and in addition thereto said part gis provided with another depressed bar,g0, carrying stud or .studs 911 and an elevated cross-bar, g, which The part f is formed with cross-bar fg,

The buekleH, which is separately illustrated in Fig. 5, consists of but one part or frame, h,l corresponding to part g ot' buckle G, and is formed with depressed cross-bars h! h2, the former carrying a swinging tongue, 11,3,and the latter a stud or studs, 71.4,- and h5- is an elevated cross-bar forming part ofvi'ratne'. 7L, and is situated between the cross-bars h' and h2.

The halter or bridle is constructed, or its parts put together, in substantially the following manner: The near or left side eheek-strap, C, engages at its lower end with the nose-buckle E', said end entering into the recess or groove el, and held in place by stud c4 of said buckle, as shown in Fig. 1. strap G is provided with a slot, so as to engage the tongue g8 of buckle G, and it encircles the rI he upper end ot' saidY bar gs, and the chape, or end G3 thereof, passes Y under the elevated bar gg, as illustrated at x,

The nose-and-chin band B is one continuous strap, one end of which is slotted to engage with tongue h3 of buckle H,as more plainly shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The other end forms the billet H for buckle H. Said strap passes througha ring, lr, of bitching-tug K, thence through nose-buckles E E', and engages with their respective studs e8, and thence to the chin-buckle H, as illustrated.

The neck-strap D is passed through the slit 7c of tug K. The ends d d2 of said strap are provided with openings d d3, and engage with the studs gef4 and enter the grooves or recesses g12f9,`respectively, of the cheek-buckles G F, in like manner as described for cheek-straps on the nose-buckles E E.

.It will be noticed from the foregoing that all the parts described are pnt together without theaidofstiching, riveting, or other similar fastening devices.

The:lugs g5, f5, and e5 are providedfor giving` greater bearing-surfaces for the straps at their points of connection with the buckles on which said lugs are respectively formed; but said lugs may,it desired, be dispensed with.

The halter A is provided with the usual brow-piece, I, and bitching-tug K. The latter may be a-metal tug ot' any desired shape or construction; or the usual leather tug may be employed.

Ifdesired, a strap, L, may be used for re-en forcing the chin-strap, and thereby make such part of the holder or bridle more durable than would otherwise be the case if but a single strap were used. Said strap L is secu red at one end, I, to stud e8 of buckle E, and at its opposite end, l', to stud h4 of buckle H, as more plainly shown in Fig. 6.

Fig. 8 shows a bridle embodying my invention, wherein the chin-and-nose strap B and cheek-straps C C are arranged and secured tov gether by buckles E E and H, as above set forth; but the neck-strap is secured to or passes through loopsin brow-piece I, as shown. In such case the buckles Fand Gare dispensed with, and in lieu of buckle Gra buckle, H, is substituted, and a double band or stra-p, M, is provided.

The grooves or recesses c1,f9, and gl2 are respectively formed in buckles E, F, and G for receiving and protecting the ends of the cheek and neck straps, asshown, and the elevated bars g9 and h5, respectively, of buckles Gr and H are provided in order that the chape ends of straps C and B may be tucked under said bars Without requiring said ends to be shaved or reduced in thickness.

l am vaware that two-part buckles with bars and studs have been employed to connect the variousstrapsofhaltersandbridles. Therefore I do not claim such buckles, broadly, but only when they are provided with grooves-or recesses e1", fg, and gli, as above described.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. The improved halter or bridle, having continuous cheekandhead strap C C* and a separate cheek-strap, C, united to strapC by a tongued buckle, the two-part buckles -E E, having grooves or recesses c10 for'the reception and protection of the lower ends of cheekstraps C C', and the continuous nose-and-chin strap B, secured to buckles E'E, and provid ed with a tongued buckle,lsaid parts being constructed substantially as shown and described.

2. A halter-buckle composed of two uniting frames or parts formed with a depressed crossbar having a projecting lip adapted and designed to form a recess or groove for the reception and protection ot' the end of a strap, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination, with cheek-straps() C."

and chin-and-nose strap B, united by buckles E E', formed with grooves or recesses em, constructed substantially as shown and described of the re-enforcing strap L, secured at one end to buckle E and at its opposite end to a buckle, H, on strap B, substantially as shown and described.

4. The buckle H, having depressed crossbars h h2 and intermediate bar, h5, elevated above frame h, the bar It carrying tongue h3 and the bar h2 formed with or Without stud h4, substantially as shown and described.
