Patented Jan. 1, 1952 j UNITED STATES PATENT FFI'CE l Y 2,580,523 u I oiGAR'rTE HQLDER i Albert J. Crone, Cincinnati, Ohio Application July zo, 1945, serial No. 606,119
i 1 My invention relates to cigarette holders and has for an object to provide in such a device means to minimize the danger of 'fires being started by cigarettes.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cigarette holder so formed that the entire cigarette may be consumed.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a cigarette holder a heat dissipating device.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a stem within which a cigarette may be held and means for automatically moving the cigarette so that the lighted end is visible and exposed to the atmosphere.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of my cigarette holder,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view of a stem of the device,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal, sectional view of Figure 1, partly broken away,
Figure 4 is a similar View showing a spring expanded,
Figure 5 is a broken away end of a mouth-piece, looking in the direction of line 5-5 of Fig. 1,
Figure 6 is an end view of Figure 1, and
Figure 7 is a section on line 1--1 of Figure l.
My invention l0, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, includes a stem II and a mouth-piece I2. The stem I|, from end I3 to end I4, is cylindrical internally and of a length to receive a major portion of a cigarette I5, which is freely slidable within said stem I I. The end I3 of stem is chamfered out as indicated at I6, in order that the cigarette may be easily inserted. 'Ihe end |4 of stem is screwthreaded to receive the threaded end of the mouthpiece l2, the latter being provided with an outwardly grooved projection I8 at its inner end and around which is secured the inner end I9 of a coil spring 20. To the end 2| of the spring is secured a pusher cup 22, by means of an outwardly grooved stem 23 of the pusher cup and around which stem the terminal of the spring is secured. The cup 22 frictionally holds the end 2d of the cigarette in order that it will still be held in horizontal position after it has been pushed beyond the said end I3.
Threadedly mounted upon the outer portion 25 of the stem I|. is a member 26, including a ring 21. secured to the end I3 of said stem II.
1 Claim. (Cl. 1314-181) 2 From the ring 21 extend arms 28. 29, to the outer ends 30 of which is secured a ring 3|. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the stem has an externally threaded portion and the ring 21 comprises an intermediate portion of the member 26, this intermediate portion being internally threaded and engaged on said externally threaded portion, While the arms 28 and 29 are integral forwardly extending portions of member 26 and terminate in the ring 3|. Fixed to the arms 28, 29, and inwardly of ring 3|, is a pair of fine tungsten steel wires 32 and 33, against which the lighted end 34 of the cigarette I5 is forced through the action of the spring 20. The member 26, with the arms 28, 29, and ring 3|, constitute a cage, to permit free passage of air and convenient lighting of the cigarette. The longitudinal openings 35 in member 26 permit access of air to the body portion 25 of stem |I, to prevent heating thereof as a result of its proximity to the lighted end of the cigarette. Beyond the edge 36 of the said member 26, the stem uniformly tapers toward the head 31 of the mouthpiece as clearly indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings. A clip 38, is provided on the member 26, for securing the device to a pocket of the user.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will 'be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
- The spring is removable with the mouth-piece. Due to the construction of my cigarette holder as above outlined, it will be obvious that the lighted end of the cigarette is held in such a manner as to keep it out of contact with anything externally of its cage and if a cigarette holder of the character described herein and with a lighted cigarette therein were mislaid in a bed the danger of fire would be lessened. Furthermore, the entire cigarette can be consumed, no portion being wasted, so in the aggregate it will be a money saver. It is obvious that larger sizes may be made for cigars.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A cigarette holder comprising a mouth piece, a tubular stem threadably secured to said mouth ing an apertured-i protective grill` surroundingtthe said stent adjacent saidjlared iend ,tliereof-.i s'aid;
member having an intermediate portion thereof comprising a ring internally threaded and enagagingsaid externally threaded portion of.the stem, arms integral with and extending forwardly"V-- from said ring, another ring secured: to=theffor.- ward ends of the arms, and heat-resistant cross wires secured to and between said arms tdabut* a lighted end of a cigarette, whereby sai'dtcigaeV rette is supported with the lighted end thereof visible.andr-substantiallyopen to-,the atmosphere; 2G
