Description
Dec. 25, 1951 G. w. MUHM GAFF Filed May 9, 1947 131 WWW Attorney:
Patented Dec. 25, 1951 GAFF George W. Muhm, Portland, Oreg.; Gertrude E. Muhm administratrix of said George W. Muhm,
deceased Application May 9, 1947, Serial No. 747,155
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to improvements in gafi's and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally, the invention comprises a handle member formed of wood, plastic or the like and has pivoted at its outer end a gaff which is adapted to normally lie within a recess formed within the handle but which, when extended, may be held by a latch member mounted in a forwardly extending groove. To the rear end of the handle is attached an elastic band having a loop at its free end which is adapted to be passed over the belt of the user.
It is accordingly an object of the inventionto provide a simple, inexpensive and efiicient gaff which may be carried conveniently in the trousers pocket of the user.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby a device of the character described is provided with a safety covering for the hook when not in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the device is prevented from accidental loss by the user.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation-a1 view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a portable gaff having a handle ll) of generally elongated formation and provided with a bulged portion I I in which is formed a slot l2 which is adapted to receive a hook l3 when the same is in retracted position said hook being pivotally mounted within the slot l2 as indicated at I4.
Communicating with the slot l2 and extending forwardly in the handle in is a groove 15 in which is fastened by means of a rivet IS a latch member ll which is adapted to retain the hookit when the same is in extended position. as indicated in Figure 3.
To the rear end of the handle I 0 is aillxed a band of elastic material l8 whose free end is formed with a loop l9.
In operation, it will be apparent that when not in use the hook I3 may be forced into the slot 12 and the handle [0 and its attendant .devices may then be placed within a pocket of the user's trousers, the loop I9 having previously been mounted over the trousers belt of the wearer. When it is desired to use the gaff, the hook l3 may be readily withdrawn from the slot l2 and rotated to its outer position and thereupon forced into the latch I1. The gaff may then be utilized in the conventional manner, the band l8 expanding as the user reaches beyond its ordinary length.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
A gaff comprising an elongated body having a longitudinal slot in the forward end thereof, a hook, a shank integrally formed with said hook, the free end of said shank pivotally mounted within the slot substantially in the longitudinal center thereof and said hook having its pointed end receivable in the rear of said slot when in retracted position, and a U-shaped latch member mounted in the slot adjacent the forward end thereof for receiving the shank adjacent the hook when the same is in extended position, whereby said shank is fully embraced by said body when the hook is so extended.
GEORGE W. MUHIM.
