Description

June 30, 1942. A. J. WYMAN WRIST BAND GRIP FOR GOLF CLUBS Filed July 28, 1941 An my J Patented June 30, 1942 UNlTED STATES T O F E I C 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a wrist hand grip for golf clubs and has for an object to provide a strap adapted to straddle the butt end of the club shaft and pass around the back of the golfers handso that at the top of the back swing the tendency of the butt end of the shaft to swing or pivot in the hand will pull the strap against the back of the hand and cause a pulled cocked wrist at the top of the swing to prevent overswinging and eliminate loss of control of the club.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be worn on the left hand of a right hand golfer or on the right hand of a left hand golfer without special straps being constructed for this purpose, as would be necessary were the device in the form of a glove.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be formed of a few strong, simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrist band grip constructed in accordance with the invention, in applied position, and showing the club shaft and palm of the hand in elevation.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the strap, similar to Figure l, but showing the back of the hand in elevation.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the strap.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, I designates a strap of leather or other inextensible material, the strap being covered by a sleeve ll of felt or other soft padding material, which is secured to the strap by lines of stitching l2. A reinforcing sleeve i3 of fabric is secured to the padding material by longitudinal and transverse lines of stitching l4 and IS, the former being disposed outside of the longitudinal. edges of the strap Ill and the latter passing through the strap Ill.
The strap I0 is equipped with a pair of short straps l6 and I1, one of which is equipped with a buckle l8 and the other of which is provided with perforations l9 to receive the buckle for adjusting the strap to encircle the wrist of the wearer and extend diagonally forward from the base of the thumb toward the little finger and present the fabric reinforced portion l3 of the' strap in position to straddle the butt end 20 of a golf club shaft and clamp the same to the heel of the palm of the hand, see Figure 1.
For tightening the club shaft straddling portion of the strap and drawing the same into the form of a loop upon the club shaft, a short strap 2| is secured at one end to the strap ID by lines of stitching 22, or otherwise, adjacent one end of the club shaft straddling reinforced portion I3 of the strap. A buckle 23 is secured to the strap 10, in any preferred manner, adjacent the opposite end of the portion [3 and is adapted to interchangeably receive perforations 24 in the strap 2| when the strap 2| is directed to extend around the heel of the palm of the hand at an angle of about to the portion I3 of the strap, see Figure 2.
In operation, during the back swing of the club, the butt end 20 will tend to pivot outwardly in the palm and this tendency will be resisted by the club straddling portion l3 with a resultant pull of the strap against the back of the hand at the wrist of the golfer to produce a pulled cocked wrist at the top of the swing.
From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described comprising, an inextensible strap, a covering of soft padding material on the strap, a covering of fabric sleeved on the padding, means for tightening the strap to encircle the wrist of the wearer and extend diagonally forward from the base of the thumb toward the little finger and present said fabric material in position to straddle the butt end of a golf club shaft at the heel of the palm of the hand, and a relatively short strap and buckle therefor secured to the inextensible strap on opposite sides of the club straddling portion of the inextensible strap and adapted to draw the club straddling portion into the form of a loop for clamping the shaft at the butt end against the palm and prevent over swinging of the club.
2. A device of the class described comprising, a wrist strap adapted to diagonally encircle the wrist, the back and. the palm of the hand and straddle the butt end of the shaft of a golf club at the heel of the palm of the hand, and an adjustable strap connected to the wrist strap on opposite sides of the club shaft straddling portion of the wrist strap and adapted to extend around the heel of the palm at an angle of about sixty degrees to the shaft straddling portion of the strap. 7
