Description

G. J. WYKOFF SHEATHED KNIFE FASTENING April 6, 1948.
Filed Nov. 5, 1945 Patented Apr. 6, 1948 UNITED STATE ATENT OFFICE SHEATHED KNIFE FASTENING Garrett J. Wykoff, Yorktown, Va.
Application November 5, 1945, Serial No. 626,621
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a sheathed knife fastening, and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a fastening means including coacting parts carried by both the sheath and knife.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a fastening of this kind whereby the desired fastening and unfastening can be readily effected with the use of but one hand and wherein the construction is such as to eliminate protruding parts which would in any way interfere with the free withdrawing of the knife from the sheath.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved sheathed knife fastening whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a fastening constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of the sheath with the knife removed;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of the sheath as illustrated in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the hilt portion of the knife, unapplied;
Figure 5 is anrenlarged sectional View taken substantially on the line '55 of Figure 3; and Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 66 of Figure 4.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, S denotes a sheath of a conventional type made of leather or kindred material and which is adapted to receive the blade B of a hunting knife or the like.
One side wall of the sheath S is extended and formed to provide a loop L through which a belt is adapted to be threaded or otherwise used for supporting the sheath S upon the person.
The outer wall of the loop L immediately adjacent its junction with the sheath S proper has cut therethrough an upwardly and outwardly disposed elongated tongue I carrying an outwardly facing snap head 2 which is adapted to be effectively engaged within the socket member 3 secured to a side face of the hilt H of the knife at a suitable point from the inner end thereof.
It is believed to be readily apparent that the tongue I can be readily engaged with or disen- 2 gaged from the hilt H by a digit of the hand, preferably the thumb, grasping the hilt H.
It is also to be noted that there are no protruding parts carried by either the hilt H or the tongue I which Will in any way offer any interference with the ready and easy insertion or removal of the blade B with respect to the sheath S. It is for this reason that the hilt H carries the socket member 3 or the female part of the separable fastener.
It is also to be pointed out that this socket member 3 is sunk within the hilt H substantially flush with the adjacent surface of the hilt H.
From the foregoing description it is believed to be obvious that a sheathed knife fastening constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
1' claim:
1. The combination with a knife including a blade and hilt and a sheath for the blade including a belt loop extending beyond the receiving end of the sheath, of a tongue struck from the outer wall of the loop, and interlocking elements carried by the tongue and by the hilt of the knife for releasably holding the blade from withdrawal from within the sheath.
2. The combination with a knife including a blade and hilt and a sheath for the knife blade, of a relatively long flexible element connected with and extending from the blade receiving end of the sheath, said flexible element being adapted for connection with a belt, a tongue cut from the flexible element, and separable snap fastener elements carried by the tongue and by the hilt of the knife for releasably securing the blade against withdrawal from the sheath.
