COMBINATION HINGE Filed Nov, 9, 1945 "in f @milmlg mmv/7]] /N VEA/TOR JOHN R DOMAN ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 4, 11951 '2,577,456 COMBINATION HINGEl John l. Doman, Los Angeles, Califi, assignor to Victor P. Doman, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application November 9, 1.945,- Serial No. 627,607
6 claims. (o1. iii-142) This invention relates to hinges and more especially to a combination hinge having check features for restraining a hinged closed or opened position.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive device of the character described.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved combination hinge and door check adapted for checking the door in closed or opened position.
A further object is to provide in a hinge check features whereby a hinged structure such as a door may be checked in selected open positions as well as closed position.
An additional object is to provide a combination hinge and door check adapted for use with doors, windows, transoms, cupboard and cabinet doors and other uses of like character.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is an elevation view of a combination hinge embodying a form of my invention and shown in connection with a door and jamb.
Figure 2 is an elevation View showing the opposite side of the hinge shown in Figure l.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the relation of the parts with the door closed.
Figure 5 is a View similar to Figure 1 showing a modied form of my invention.
Figure 6 is an elevation View showing the opposite side of hinge shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 1-1 of Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7 showing a further modified form of my invention.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 8 showing the parts in the position assumed when the door is closed.
Figure 10 is a fragmentary view showing a modified check element and mode of attaching to a hinge butt.
Referring more particularly to the drawing and especially to Figures 1 4, I show a. combination hinge comprising a pair of butts I0 and pivotally secured together by a pin |2 and secured as by screws I3 to a jamb I4 and door I5 respectively. J amb I4 is formed with a recess I6 and door I5 is formed with a recess l1 to accommodate the check structure about to be described.
Butt I is formed with a substantially recstructure in.
III
, 2 tangular aperture |8 and butt I6 is formedwith a rectangular aperture I9 and a pair of lugs 2D.
I show a check element 2| which has a somewhat U-shaped formation formed of a strip of resilient material such as spring steel. Element 2| has a somewhat circular` center portion 22, and a pair of ends 23 positioned in aperture I9. Ends 23 are formed with apertures 24 for engaging lugs 2|) in the opposite sides of aperture I9. Butt II has a substantially rectangular aperture I8 through which the centerportion 22 of element 2| extends, as shown in Figure 4, when in the closed position of the door, portion 22 extending into recess I1 of door I 4.
The operation of the invention as thus fardescribed should be apparent from the foregoing description. Element 2| is seen to be securely attached to butt I by the resiliencyr of ends 23 and the engagementoi apertures 24 and lugs 2D. Ends 23 are sprung inwardly to permit movement of butt II and aperture I8 into and out of engagement with spring 2|. The curved enlargement 22 thus frictionally engages the opposite sides of aperture I8 and eflectively checks the opening movement of the door. Due to the gradual curve of spring 2| the movement of the hinge butt I I into or out of checking engagement therewith occurs substantially silently and no loud snapping action occurs.
In Figures 5 9,- I show a modified form of my invention. In these iigures I show butts 30 and 3| secured together by a bearing pin 32 and secured as by screws 33 to a door 34 and jamb 35 respectively, door 34 having a shallow recess 36 4and jamb 35 having a deep recess 31.
Butt 3| has a pair of rectangular apertures 38 and 39 forming an abutment bar 4|) while butt 30 has a pair of rectangular apertures 4| and 42 forming an abutment bar 43.
The check element of these figures is indicated at 44 and comprises an elongated flat strip of resilient steel or the equivalent having a lip 45 extending through apertures 4| and 42, this lip being formed with a curved end 46 which extends into aperture 42, thus by clamping action securing the element 44 to bar 43 of butt 30. A lug 46a is formed as shown and engages the outer side of bar 43.
Element 44 has an undulating formation providing a plurality of curved cam-like portions 41 adapted to engage edge portions of aperture 38 when the element moves through aperture 38 and into recess 31 of the jamb 35. Element 44 has a bent end portion 48 formed with a flange 49 forming a hook-like abutment for engaging 3 abutment bar 40 for limiting the open movement of butt 30 and door 34.
Figure 7 shows the check element 44 applied to a hinge whereby the door 34 may be opened by a 180 degree movement and will be checked in that position. Figure 8 shows a modified check element applied to a hinge for a door which may be checked at a 90 degree position. Figure 9 showsthe door of either Figui'e7jor71i'gure8in closed position with the check yelement Vextended into recess 31.
Having thus described my invention what-"1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis':
