.1 'lheV present invention relates to fill boxesfand its consists in the combinations;constructions and arrangements of partsherein'described and claimed. I l .l
. Generally, the invention comprises a nllbox loi" the-type adapted tolle ush with kthe surfaceof the erund and. provided with e musing, er1. auer cover having a grooved portion with a v,gasket mounted therein. and adapted .bozrecevean Wardly extending annular portion of thehousin'g and an. inner cover adaptedfto. be quickly and easily removable` and provided with alocking means. 'A sand trap is provided adjacent the outer cover and a water trap is provided adjacent the inner cover which is removably mounted upon a replaceable nipple.
It is an object of the invention to provide a ill box having a plurality of traps for sand, water and the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a device of the character set forth, of threadless covers.
Another object of the invention is the provi sion of novel means for locking the inner cover of a mechanism as above set forth.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel seat construction for the inner cover of a flll box.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment oi the invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan View of the device shown in Figure 1, with certain parts removed,
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view, taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a bottom plan viewiof a cover forming a part of the invention,
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 5--5 of Figures 2 and 3,
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken I along line 6 6 of Figure 2,
Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 1-1 of Figure 4,
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken along line 8-8 of Figure 2, and
Figure 9 is a sectional view taken along line 9-9 of Figure 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a. fill box comprising a housing of generally circular cross-section having an interior-ly threaded dependent portion I0 for the reception of a conventional ll pipe (not shown) an enlarged central section I I and a. further enlarged top section I2.
1 Claim. (Cl. 220757) Spacedfrom the wallj of, the top section is an integrally formed upwardly extending continuation I3 of the wall of the central. section II, the topof. which is adapted to be received in an an,- nular groove I4 formed in the underside of a top. cover I5, Within the groove I 4, is provided a, gasket I6.
The cover I5 is adapted to lie lflush with. the upper extremity I1 of. the top portionfl. of the housing and is provided with a centrally. located. slot. I8 having a crosspiece I9. extending there-. across.
The continuation I3 is provided with a pair of inwardly extending locking lugs 20 and the cover I5 has attached to its underside, by means of screws 2i, a pair of locking plates 22 which are angularly disposed, as best shown in Figure '1.
The continuation I3 and the wall of the top portion I2 of the housing form therebetween a sand trap 23.
A nipple 24 is exteriorly threaded at its bottom portion and is adapted to be removably engaged in the dependent portion II) of the housing and extend upwardly therefrom. It is provided with a tapered upper edge 25 upon which an inner cover 26 having a dependent ange 21 is adapted to be removably mounted. The ange is provided with a gasket 28 upon its interior face.
To the upper side of the inner cover is pivotally mounted, by means of a pin 29, a locking bar 30 having integrally formed wedge-shaped outer faces 3l and an integrally formed abutment 32 upon each face. The faces 3I are adapted to pass beneath locking dogs 33 formed on the inner surface of the central section II of the housing.
Adjacent the outer end of one of the faces 3|, there is provided a pair of upwardly extending brackets 34 each having an opening 35 extending laterally therethrough. The brackets are interconnected at their inner ends with a pin 36 and a lock bolt 31 having an opening 38 is hingedly mounted thereon and adapted to extend when in its outward position to a point adjacent the outer end of the face 3|. The lock bolt 31 is provided with an integrally formed ngerpiece 39. The openings 35 and 38 are adapted to register with one another when the bolt 31 is in its outward position.
An additional sand and Water trap 40 is provided in the space between the outer side of the nipple 24 and the inner side of the wall of the central portion I I of the housing.
In operation, it Will be apparent that, after the ll box is used, the inner cover 26 is rst placed in position upon the nipple 24 and that the gasket 28 will form a sealed joint with the tapered portion 25 of the nipple when the locking bar 30 is turned so that the faces 3I thereof come into engagement with the dogs 33 forcing the cover downwardly. The lock bolt 31 may then be swung to its outward position and one dog 33 will be held between it and the abutment 32 onithat side of the locking bar, thus preventing rotation in either direction. A padlock may then be passed through the openings 35 and 38, thus preventing unauthorized removal of the cover 26.
The outer cover I5 may now be placed in position and turned by a suitable tool being placed in the slot I8 under the cross-piece I9, thus causing the locking plates 22 to bear against the locking lugs 20 and compressing the gasket I6 between the cover and the continuation I3.
It will be seen that two compartments or traps 23 and 38 are provided by this structure. It will also be apparent that the nipple 24 may be easily and quickly replaced whenever necessary.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modiiications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In combination with a circular housing having a nipple projecting upwardly therein, a cover for said nipple, dogs projecting inwardly from the walls of the housing, a horizontally extending bar centrally pivoted upon the top of said cap and having end portions extending beyond the edge of said cap and having transversely inclined upper faces constituting cam surfaces engaging under the dogs to force the cap downwardly upon said nipple, an integrally formed abutment extending upwardly from each of said cam surfaces at one side thereof, an arm pivoted for radial vertical swinging movement mounted upon one end portion of said bar in circumferentlally spaced relation to the abutment on said last named end portion and contiguous in its outward position with one side of one of said dogs when ari-abutment is contiguous with the other side.
