Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES TV. TRIOKEY, OF BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMPOSITION FOR CLEANING PROTECTING METAL SURFACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,535, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed January 21, 1881.
To all whom tt may concern Be it known thatl', CHARLES W. TRICKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belmont, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Compound to be used for Cleaning, Polishing, and Protecting Brass, Bright Iron, and other Metals, of which the following is a specitic'ation.
The invention consists in a mixture of oils in certain proportions with a preparation of gum-guaiaonm and scented with oil-mirbane.
To prepare this compound, take of marrowoil, one and one-half part; paraffine-oil, one and one-half part; oleine, one part, and mix them together. To each gallon of the mixture add four fluid ounces of the tincture of gumguaiacum and one dram of oil-mirbane. Then mix the ingredients thoroughly by stirring over a slow fire. If it is desired to make the mixture thin, add twen ty-five per cent. of kerosene-oil, and to that may be added as much of the tincture as found desirable.
This compound is used by rubbing the surface to be cleaned and protected with a woolen or other fabric or material wet-ted or moistened with the compound.
(Specimens) I have ascertained from experiment and practical tests that the acid properties of the oleine, when the compound is applied. to the cylinder-head of a steameugine, will, without staining the metal, dissolve the tarnish and remove whatever oil has been burned on the head.
The preparation of gum increases the cleaning property of the compound, brings out a deep, intense, and desirable luster, and protects in a great measure the metal from the action of the atmosphere and from becoming easily spotted.
Having described my invention, claim is-- The within-described compound for cleaning and protecting metal surfaces, consisting of marrow-oil, paraffine-oil, oleine, tincture of gum-guaiacum, and oil-mirbane, in about the proportions specified.
what I CHARLES W. TRIOKEY.
