VARNISH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 245,570, dated August 9, 1881.
Application filed March 15, 1881.
new and improved compound for removing stains from polished wood surfaces and renewing and preserving the luster of the same.
My improved compound consists of the following ingredients in the following proportions, to wit:
Linseed-oil 350 parts Olive-oil .l 145 Mastic 145 Sulphuricether.. 06 Tinctnre of benzoin 9U Oil of turpentine 90 Tincture 0t curcuma Nitro-henzole 45 Total -1,000parts Thelinseed-oilis poured into awooden, glass, or earthenware vessel, and the olive-oil is gradually added, the mixture being stirred continually. As soon as the two oils have become thoroughly mixed the mast-ie(0f the best quality) is added, the mixture being stirred until it is completely dissolved. The sulphuric ether,

the tincture of curcuma, and the nitro-benzoleare then added in the order named, the mixture being thoroughly stirred every time a fresh ingredient is added, which ingredient is not added until the previous one has been entirely dissolved. The vessel containing the mixture is then covered, and the mixture is permitted to settle for a few hours.
The ingredients should not be mixed at a lower temperature than 70 Fahrenheit.
The mixture is applied with a brush, and is then rubbed down with a woolen cloth.
This compound is used to remove stains and congealed oil and'varnish frompolished wood surfaces of all kinds, and also serves to renew and preserve the polish and luster of' thes surfaces.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as newand desireto secure byLetters Patent The within-described compound for cleaning and preserving polished wood surfaces, consistin g of linseed-oi], olive-oil, mastic, sulphuric ether, tincture of benzoin, oil of turpentine, tincture of curcuma, and nitro-benzole, in the proportions stated.
