In amachine operating as disclosed in the afore-noted copending application Serial No;
8548 (now Patent 2,531,207) and embodying an application ofthe invention, a program of divisionis initiated upon depression ofa settable divide key 590 (Figs. 1', 2 and 3). Divide key 590' isheld in adjusted positionby a lever! l 9 (Fig. 2) which is pivotally mounted upon a bracket secured atthe front of the keyboard. Thestem of the divide key is provided with two spaced lugs? and the rightwardly'extendingarm of lever 1 I 9'is positioned therebetween. The ends of a toggle spring lztl'are attached to the rightmost. end of. lever H9 and to a pinfixed'in the bracket at the front of the keyboard. Thus, lever 1 l 9 is biased'in' counterclockwise direction (Fig. 2) thereby hold ing'divide'key' 590 in raised position. thereby moving link 122 from the position shown in Fig. 1 toward the front of the machine. Link 122 is provided with a pin 122' which is adapted for operation in connection with latches 456 and I25. Latch 45'6 normally connects arms 454 and 455 which are rocked in unison by a cam 312 upon operation of a two phase clutch3'II; which operation invariably occurs following the termination of a carriage shift. However, in the performance of the division program, according to the above noted copending application, arm 455 must not be rocked. Therefore, when link I22 is moved forwardly, pin I22 will rock latch 456 from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, counterclockwise against the tensionof a spring, and thereby disconnect arms 454, 455. However, prior to the final operation of clutch 31!, which invariably concludes a program of division, latch 456 is reengaged so that arm 455 may be rocked to perform certain normalizing operations to be hereinafter described.
' The eifective end of a latch lever I25 which is pivotally mounted on the framing of the machine is 'normally in engagement with a roller'on an arm of a crank I26 (Fig. l) ,'fixed on a pivotally mounted shaft 6H3; Asecond crank I29 is affixed to crank I26 by a sleeve, and the two cranks and shaft 6I6 are biased in clockwise direction by-aspring I28 attached to an arm of crank I29. When latch I25 is in normal engagement with the roller of crank I26, shaft 616 is held in counterclockwise position against th tension of spring 128. 'Latch 1251s normally engaged by pin I22 (Fig. l) and therefore when link 122 is moved forwardly (not shown), pin 122' will move latchfI25 out of engagement with the roller of crank 126. Accordingly, spring I28 will rock crank I29, crank 126 and shaft M6 in a clockwise direction to theposition shown in Fig; 3. Another crank 132 is also fixed on shaft M6 and extends upwardly therefrom. The rearward end of a forwardly extending link I33 is attached to,
crank I32, and as the crank isrocked with shaft dunk 13s is moved toward the front of the machine. As disclosed in the afore-noted copending application Ser. No. 8,548 (now Patent 2,531,207), the movements-of cranks I26, I29 and link-I33 are adapted to adjust certain controlsfor the division program and to initiate the operation of certain mechanisms to move clutch lever II I in counterclockwise direction (Fig. 3), thereby engaging differential clutch mechanism I for subtractive registration, Furthermore, as will be hereinafter described, certain preliminary adjustments-of the devices-of the invention will be effected as an incident to the operation of. the aforesaid registration control means to initiate the program.
The subtractive registrations willcontinue until a divisor set on the keyboard III is subtracted once more than it is contained in the corresponding portion of the dividend registered in dividend Wheels I3. A negative numeral wheel reading is therefore obtained and the tens transfer mechanism will successively move wheels 13 through intermediate gears 545 from 0 to 9 as far toward the left as such transfer mechanism is provided. One of the intermediate gear 545 is located to the outside of the left hand side frame and the one stepmovement of this gear by th'efltenstransfer mechanism is utilized to trip the control devices for terminating the subtractive operation by rocking a lever 3|. Lever 3| is spring urged in clockwise direction and its leftmost free end is provided with a nose 3| engaging a tooth space of the intermediate gear 545. The rightmost end of lever 3| normally engages a spring urged latch 25 thereby holding said latch in disengaged position. Latch 25 is mounted on the upper free end of a pivotally mounted arm 24 which is held in normal counterclockwise position (Figs. 1 and 3) by as'uitables'pring. Latch 25 is adapted for engagement with a shoulder at the upper free end of an arm 22 which is pivotally mounted at a common point with arm 24. Arm 22 is reciprocated clockwise from the position shown in Fig. 1 and return, once for each cycle of registration by a link 2| and crank 26 which is driven by a suitable gear train (Fig. 3) with the actuating mechanism.
Upon movement of gear 545, lever M will be rocked, thereby releasing latch 25 for engagement with the shoulder of arm 22. Therefore upon the next clockwise movement of arm 22, arm
24 will be rocked in unison therewith to move said arm 24 against the fixed stop 29. Arm 24 is provided with an extension I44 provided with a cam slot at its free end adapted for engage ment with a pin I45 on clutch lever II I. Therefore, when arm 24 i moved against stop 29, the cam slot will move clutch lever II I to its neutral position, thereby disconnecting the drive to the actuators. Arms 22, 24 will, thereupon, rebound from stop 29 in the reverse direction and latch 25 will be disengaged by lever 3| and clutch leverlll engaged for additive registration. A single additive registration will be efiected to correct the excessive subtraction as the tens transfer mechanism will move the leftmost wheels from 9 back to 0 thereby tripping the control devices and initiating a single order carriage shift. The initiation of the carriage shift is effected by engagement of the two phase clutch 3H for a single step of movement and upon termination of the shift, the clutch is reengaged to effect certain normalizing operations as will appear.
The retraction of divide key 596 by stop key 6I8 provides that the division program may be terminated when the desired number f quotient digits have been registered. Upon retraction of divide key 590, the machine will continue to calculate until the correct quotient digit has been registered in that order; thereupon carriage 2 will be shifted one order to the left and the operation terminated without calculation in that order as follows:
It will be recalled that when divide key 590 is depressed latch 456 was moved to disconnect arms 454, 455. Retraction of divide key 590 therefore will permit the recoupling of said arms by latch 456. Arm 455 is adapted for engagement with a depending lug on a link 424 which is attached at its forward end to arm 24. Therefore when the two phase clutch 3' is operated at the termination of the final shifting operation, cam 312 will rock arms 454, 455. Link 424 will therefore carry arm 24 to the fixed stop 29 and thereby disengage differential clutch I05.
If the stop key is not operated, the program of operations will continue until the carriage is shifted into its leftmost position. Upon completion of the registering operations in that order. the carriage shift mechanism will be idly operated for a single cycle. The idle operation is utilized to restore the divide key and thereupon the operation of the two phase clutch will termi-, nate the operation in accordance with its operation upon retraction-of the divide key by the stop,
key.
Alternate shopping operation From the foregoing it will be noted that upon retraction of the divide key, operation of the carriage shift mechanism is necessary to stop the machine, that termination of an additive cycle of registration is necessary to initiate the carriage shift and that the termination of the subtractive and additive registrations is effected by movement of the numeral wheels to operate lever 3|. If lever 3| is not operated after a given number of cycles of the registering mechanism the devices of the invention are adapted to opcrate said lever to terminate the subtractive operation and operate it a second time to terminate the following additive cycle of operation. The operation of the two phase clutch 3'" upon termination of the carriage shift will thus stop the machine as described in connection with the operation of the stopping means when lever 3| is operated by movement of the numeral wheels.
To accomplish the above, a device has been provided which, after retraction of divide key 590 will be advanced one step of movement for each cycle of operation of the registering mechanism. The tenth cycle will effect the maximum advancement and then permit a reverse movement of the device one step; the advancement and subsequent reverse movement effecting operation of trip lever 3| to terminate minus operation of the registering mechanism. The following plus corrective cycle will effect readvancement and reverse movement of the device to again operate lever 3I to terminate the operation. The maximum number of cycles required for the registration of any quotient digit is eleven, i. e., ten negative cycles and a plus corrective cycle for the digit nine. It will be seen therefore that the devices of the invention will not interfere with the operation of the normally operable stop- 2 ping means but will be operated in lieu thereof if, for reasons heretofore set forth, said normally operable means is rendered ineffective.
The device comprises a ratchet member 808 (Figs. 1, 3 and 4) having a series of teeth extending partially around its periphery. Ratchet 800 is rotatably mounted on shaft 8 I 6 between cranks 132 and 726, and is normally held in clockwise position (Fig. 1) by a spring 80I (Fig. 4). A
suitable stop pin on ratchet 800 determines its normal position by engagement with the lower free end of a slide 882 (Fig. l). Ratchet 850 is provided with a counting detent 803 and a back stop pawl 804; each of which is spring biased for engagement with said ratchet. A latching arrangement, however, normally holds pawl 804 and detent 803 out of engagement (Fig. 1) with the ratchet. Such latching is effected by a circumferentially disposed edge portion of crank I25 engaging back stop pawl 80 At its lower free end, detent 803 has slot connection with pawl 804 and is thereby also held from engagement with ratchet 800. Detent 803 is pivotally mounted at its upper end on a leftward extension of arm 22. Therefore, as arm 22 is reciprocated with each cycle of the registering mechanism, detent 803 will be raised and lowered accordingly.
The forward movement of link I22 upon depression of divide key 59d and the resulting clockwise movement (Fig. 3) of crank I26 provides for the release of pawl 8.04 and detent 803 from the edge portion of said crank and for the adjustment of another latching means to prevent the pawl and detent from engagin .ratchet 800 at this time. To this end, the edge portion of crank 126 is provided with a recess 805 which, upon clockwise movement of said crank, is moved into position to permit engagement of ratchet 800 by pawl and detent 804, 803. However, upon the aforesaid forward movement of link (22 (which position is not shown) a pin 806 on said link will be moved into position to block pawl 804 and detent 803 from movement to engage the ratchet.
Upon retraction of divide key 590, link I22 will be moved rearwardly to normal position (Fig. 3) thereby moving pin 806 from engagement witlu pawl 804. Thereupon, pawl 804 and detent 803 will be moved by their springs into engagement with ratchet 800; such engagement being allowed by recess 805. Ratchet 800 will be advanced step by step; the back stop pawl 804 preventing reverse movement of said ratchet. If the normal operation of the stoppin means does not intervene, the operation will continue until a pin on ratchet 800 is moved into engagement with the lower end of slide 802 (Fig. 3) upon the tenth step of movement of said ratchet.
Slide 802 has slot and pin mounting on the framing of the machine and is thereby adapted for movement upwardly from its normally lowered position. A rightwardly extending arm at the upper end of slide 802 underlies a pin I34 on the rightwardly extending arm of a lever I 34. Lever I34 is spring biased in clockwise direction and is provided with a pivotally mounted trip pawl l36 on its leftwardly extending arm. Pawl I36 is spring urged in counterclockwise direction but is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by engagement with a pin on the framing of the machine. When in normal position, a 111g of pawl I35 is positioned to the right and above a depending lug 0f lever 3|. Therefore, upon the tenth step of movement of ratchet 800, slide 802 will be moved upwardly and lever I34 rocked in counterclockwise direction. Pawl I 36 will thereupon be allowed counterclockwise movement to position its lug beneath the lug of lever 3| (Fig. 3). Furthermore, upon the tenth step of movement, the untoothed portion of ratchet 800 will be moved into engagement with backstop pawl 804. Therefore, upon the return downward movement of detent 803, ratchet 880 will be allowed one step of reverse movement by its spring 86L This will permit spring urged lever I34 to be rocked in clockwise direction and slide 802 to drop back to its normal lowered position. The lug of pawl I 35 engaging the lug of lever 3| will therefore rock said lever and thus release latch 25 for engagement with the shoulder of arm 22 to terminate the subtraction registration. Upon the following additive cycle of the registering mechanism, ratchet 800 will be readvanced, thereby terminating additive registration, which termination will initiate the final operation of the carriage shift mechanism. The operation of clutch 3' will effect the normalizing of the devices as follows:
The rearward movement of link I22 upon retraction of the divide key will permit the recoupling of arms 454, 455 by latch 456 as heretofore described. In its unset position (Fig. 3), latch I25 is positioned with its under side resting upon the roller of crank I25 and its upper edge moved into a position adjacent a roller on arm 455. When clutch 3H is operated the recoupled arms 454, 455 will be rocked in clockwise direction by cam 372. The roller on arm 455 will move latch I25 clockwise to normal latching position thereby moving crank I26 and he associated parts counterclockwise to normal. The movement of crank 126 to normal will engage the leftmost edge of recess 805 with pawl 804, thereby camming said pawl and detent outward- 1y from engagement with ratchet 800, thereby releasing said ratchet which will then be moved clockwise by spring Bill to normal. In the normal operation of the machine, it will be apparent that the normalization of crank 126 will be effective to release the partially advanced ratchet 800 in-like manner.
Although I have shown and described the invention as adapted for operation in conjunction with the stopping means for a particular program of operations, it will be apparent that the inven tion may be adapted for use in conjunction with other stopping means for other operations. For example, where a common drive means operates to efiect any selected one of a plurality of operations and is started as an incident to the selection, a stopping means for the drive means could be controlled by the delay devices of the invention and thereby permit a selected series of operations to be performed without stopping and starting the drive between each operation. Other applications of the invention may present themselves to those skilled in the art. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted to the specific embodiment .disclosed except as required by the spirit of the appended claims.
I claim:
1, In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, registration control means for initiating cyclic operation of the machine including a retractible operating key and means operable to terminate operation of the machine; means operable in response to the retraction of said oeprating key to initiate operation of said terminating means comprising a device adapted to be advanced from a normal position, a spring for urging said device to normal position, normally disengaged adjustable .driving means driven in timed relationship with said registering means for advancing said device incrementally against the tension of its spring, means for engaging said driving means with said device upon operation and subsequent retraction of said operating key, a contact member on said device, means operable by said contact member upon a given advance of said device to initiate operation of said terminating means and means operable in response to the operation of said terminating means to disengage said driving means.
2; A motor driven calculating machine according to claim 1 wherein the means for engaging the driving means with the device comprises a spring having connection with said driving means, latching means for holding said driving means in disengaged position against the tension of said spring and means for disabling said latching means upon operation and subsequent retraction of the operating key and wherein the means operable to disengage said driving means comprises means operable in response to the operation of the terminating means to enable said latching means.
3. A motor driven calculating machine according to claim 2 wherein the latching means comprises an adjustable member normally holding the driving means in disengaged position and a second adjustable member normally ineffectively positioned for holding said driving means in disengaged position, and wherein the "means for disabling said latching means comprises means for adjusting said first and second named members to ineffective and effective positions respectively upon operation of the operating key and for adjustingsaid second named member to ineffective position upon retraction of said key.
4. A motor driven calculating machine according to claim 3 wherein the means to disengage the driving means comprises the first named member of the latching means.
5. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, registration control means for initiating cyclic operation of the machine including a retractible operating key and means operable to terminate operation of the machine; means operable in response to the retraction of said operating key to initiate operation of said terminating means comprising a ratchet member adapted to be ad vanced from a normal position, a spring for urging said ratchet member to normal position, an adjustable counting detent driven in timed relationship with said registering means for advancing said ratchet member step by step against the tension of its spring, a back stop pawl for said ratchet member, spring means tending to engage said detent with said ratchet member, latching means for holding said detent in disengaged position, means for disabling said latching means upon operation and subsequent retraction of said operating key, a contact member on said ratchet memben'means operable by said contact member upon a given advance of said ratchet member to initiate operation of said terminating means and means operable in response to the operation of said terminating means to release said back stop pawl and said detent and to enable said latching means.

A motor driven calculating machine according to claim 5 wherein the latching means comprises an adjustable member normally holding the detent in disengaged position and a second adjustable member normally ineiiectively positioned for holding said detent in disengaged position, and wherein the means for disabling said latching means comprises means for adjusting said first and second named members to ineffective and efiective positions respectively upon operation of the operating key and for adjusting said second named member to ineffective position upon retraction of said key.

A motor driven calculating machine according to claim 5 wherein the ratchet member is provided with a toothed section and an adjoining toothless section; said toothed section being engaged by the back stop pawl during the advance of said ratchet member toward the given advanced position and being moved beyond said pawl during the last step of movement of said ratchet member to the given advanced position thereby engaging said toothless section with said pawl and permitting subsequent reverse movement of said ratchet member and readvancement thereof to said given advanced position.

In a motor driven calculating machine having a dividend register, a quotient register, selecting mechanism, cyclically operable registering means, division control means for dividing an amount registered in said dividend register by an amount set in said selecting mechanism and for automatically registering a plural figure quotient including a retractible operating key for initiating the operation, means operable to terminate operation of the machine and means operable by the dividend register to initiate operation of said terminating means in response to the retraction of said operating key upon the next completion of a quotient figure registration; a ratchet member adapted to be advanced from a normal position, a spring for urging said ratchet member to normal position, an adjustable counting detent driven in timed relationship with said registering means for advancing said ratchet member step by step against the tension of its spring, a back stop pawl for said ratchet member, spring means tending to engage said detent with said ratchet member, latching means for holding said detent in disengaged position, means for disabling said latching means upon operation and subsequent retraction of said operating key, a contact member on said ratchet member, means operable by said contact member upon a given advance of said ratchet member to initiate operation of said terminating means; the steps of advancement being of suificient number to permit cycling of the machine a number of times sufficient to permit registration of any quotient digit and means operable in response to the operation of said terminating means to release said back stop pawl and said detent and to enable said latching means. A
9. A motor driven calculating machine according to claim 8 wherein the ratchet member is provided with a toothed section and an adjoining toothless section: said toothed section being engaged by the back stop pawl during the advance of said ratchet member toward the given advanced position and being moved beyond said pawl during the last step of movement of said ratchet member to the given advanced position, thereby engagin said toothless section with said pawl and permitting sub equent reverse movement of said ratchet member and readvancement thereof to said given advanced position.
10. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, registration control means for initiating cyclic operation of the machine, including a retractable operating key and means operable to terminate the operation of the machine; means operable in response to the retraction of said operating key to initiate operation of said terminating means comprising a device adapted normal position and upon a given advance efiective to initiate operation of said terminating means, normally disengaged driving means driven in timed relation with said registering means for advancing said device incrementally, means responsive to the operation and subsequent retraction of said operating key for engaging said driving means, and means operable in response to the operation of said terminating means to disento be advanced from a 10 gage said driving means and to restore said device to normal.
11. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, registration control means for initiating cyclic operation of the machine including a retractable oper ating key, means operable to terminate operation of the machine and means normally efiective in response to the retraction of said operating key to initiate operation of said terminating means; alternate means operable in response to the retraction of said operating key to initiate operation of said terminating means comprising a device adapted to be advanced from a normal position and upon a given advance effective to initiate operation of said terminating means, normally disengaged driving means driven in timed relation with said registering means for advancing said device incrementally, means responsive to the operation and subsequent retraction of said operat ing key for engaging said driving means, and means operable in response to the operation of said terminating means to disengage said driving means and to restore said device to normal.
12. In a motor driven calculating machine having a register, cyclically operable actuating mechanism therefor, means for initiating operation of said actuating mechanism including a retractable operating key and means operable to terminate operation of said actuating mechanism; the combination with means settable upon retraction of said operating key and responsive to registration by said actuating mechanism to initiate operation of said terminating means of alternate means for initiating the terminating operation com prising a device adapted to be advanced from a normal position and upon a given advance efiective to initiate operation of said terminating means, normally disengaged driving means driven in timed relation with said actuating mechanism for advancing said device incrementally, means responsive to the operation and subsequent retraction of said operating key for engaging said driving means, and means operable in response to the operation of said terminating means to disengage said driving means and to restore said device to normal.
