(Cl. 235-62) The invention relates to stopping means for calculating machines and particularly to the control of such means in conjunction with any one of a plurality of machine operations involving operation of the registering mechanism.
The invention has been disclosed as embodied in a machine operating in accordance with the disclosure of applicants Patent 2,531,207, issued on November 21, 1950. According to this disclosure, depression of a stop key causes termination of a division program. However, operation of stopping means for the registering mechanism is delayed to permit registration of the current quotient digit thereby insuring the registration of a correct quotient extended to the desired number of decimal places.
Furthermore, according to the aforenoted disclosure, a program of multiplication is terminated after the last of a series of multiplier digit storage devices is counted I back to a zero indicating position. At this time, operation of stopping means for the registering mechanism is initiated and a latch is released to disable means to initiate operation of the carriage shifting mechanism and subsequent operation of the registering mechanism, which operations would normally follow operation of the registration stopping means after each ordinal multiplication if a digit value remained in any one of the storage devices. At times, however, misoperation of the mechanisms due to binds or other causes may prevent operation of the registration stopping means and/or release of the shift disabling latch.
In view of the aforenoted machine operating characteristics, the present invention provides a stop key which upon depression causes control devices to initiate operation of the stopping means to terminate operation of the cyclically operable registering means at the end of a current cycle of operation and to release the shift control latch if set in connection with a program of multiplication. However, during a program of division, the control devices are disabled and depression of the same stop key will cause the stopping means to be operated only after registration of the current quotient digit as noted with reference to Patent No. 2,531,207. Furthermore, movement of the registering mechanism to full cycle position also operates to disable the control devices for the stopping means. If such provision were not made, depression of the stop key with the machine at rest would trip the stopping means, and therefore upon subsequent depression of an operation initiating key, an unwanted operation of the stopping means would be effected. The invention, however, will best be understood from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

The full cycle stopping means Additive or subtractive registration in connection with the various machine operations is effected by clockwise and counterclockwise movement respectively of a clutch lever 1 (Fig. 1) from a neutral position to engage a differential clutch mechanism 3. The controls for this clutch lever to initiate the various machine operations involving registration and the associated controls to initiate operation of the registration stopping means are fully disclosed in the aforenoted Patent No. 2,531,207. Reference is made to this patent for the details of mechanisms and operations herein referred to but not disclosed.
Operation of the full cycle stopping means for the registering mechanism is initiated upon counterclockwise movement of a latch lever 5, as shown in Fig. 2. The rightmost end of lever 5 which is spring urged clockwise normally engages a spring urged latch 7 (Fig. 1) thereby holding said latch in disengaged position. Latch 7 is mounted on the upper free end of a pivotally mounted arm 9 which is normally spring held counterclockwise against a fixed stop. Latch 7 is adapted for engagement with a shoulder at the upper free end of an arm 11 which has common pivotal mounting with arm 9. Arm 11 is rocked clockwise from the position shown in Fig. l, and return, once for each cycle of the registering mechanism by a ling 13 and a crank 15 which is driven in time with the registering mechanism.
Upon counterclockwise movement of lever 5, latch 7 will be released (Fig. 2) and spring moved counterclockwise for engagement with the shoulder of arm 11. Therefore, as arm 11 passes through full cycle position, its shoulder will engage latch 7 to rock arm 9 in unison with said arm 11 and against a fixed stop 17. Arm 9 is provided with an extension 9a which has at its free end a cam slot adapted to engage a pin 10 of clutch lever 1. Therefore, when arm 9 is moved against stop 17, the cam slot will engage pin 1a, thereby moving clutch'lever 1 from its additive or from its subtractive position to neutral position to disconnect the drive to the registering mechanism. Thereupon, arms 9 and 11 will rebound from stop 17 in the reverse direction to full cycle position whereat the registering mechanism and connected parts will be located and latch 7 disengaged by lever 5 which will have been restored to normal clockwise position.
The stop key and associated devices Upon initiation of a program of multiplication, a pair of cranks 23 and 24 are rocked counterclockwise to the position shown in Fig. 3 and a latch 25 is moved beneath a nose on each crank to hold them in counterclockwise position. A horizontally disposed lever 19 (Figs. l, 2, and 3) is intermediately pivoted on the machine left side frame and has slot and pin connection at its rear end with the forward end of latch lever 5. At its forward end, lever 19 is engaged by a pair of spaced lugs 21a located at the forward end of an arm 21 which, at its rear, is also pivotally mounted on the machine side frame. As each of a series of multiplier storage devices is counted back to zero during a program of multiplication, arm 21 is rocked counterclockwise (Fig. 3) thereby rocking lever 19 in like direction to lift the forward end of latch lever 5 to initiate operation of the registration stopping means. When the last of a series of multiplier storage devices is restored to zero, not only is arm 21 rocked to terminate the registering operation but latch 25 is moved clockwise (Fig. 3) to release cranks 23-24 which will be restored to normal thereby disabling the means for initiating operation of the carriage shifting mechanism and subsequent operation of the registering mechanism. Thus the multi- V 3 V plication program terminated. The invention provides devices operable in Conjunction with a stop key 27 (Figs. 1, 1a) to rock arm 21 and to release latch 25 should the multiplication control mechanisms fail in either or both of these operations or if it is desired to stop the machine before completion of the program for other reasons, such as, for example, incorrect entry of the factors.
Stop key 27 is freely retractable and in this position (Figs. 1 and la) the lower free end of its stem is normally positioned a slight distance above a rightwardly extending arm 29a of a crank 29 pivotally mounted on the machine side frame. Crank 29 has a rearwardly extending arm 29b exteriorly of the side frame, and inwardly of the side frame an arm 29c extending to the rear and downwardly. The lower free end of arm 29c is normally a slight distance to the front of latch 25 (Fig. 3) when said latch is in set position and a stud 31 beneath the free end of. the arm limits clockwise movement (Fig. 3) of crank 29. Upon depression of stop key 27, its stern will engage arm 29a and rock crank 29 clockwise, (Fig. 2) thereby engaging arm 290 with latch 25 and moving said latch clockwise from the position shown in Fig. 3 to release cranks 23-24 if the release has not been effected bv the normally operable controls.
To rock arm 21 to initiate operation of the stopping means upon depression of key 27, the arm is provided with a pin 21b (Figs. 1 and 2) extending outwardly through an opening in the machine side frame. An arm 33 pivotally mounted at its forward end on the machine frame extends horizontally toward the rear and downwardly where it terminates in a forked end which engages a pin 35d .at the end of an arm 35a of a three armed locking member comprising a crank 35. At the rear of the horizontal portion of arm 33 the upper edge of an opening 33a engages pin 21b of arm 21. Thus, arm 21 is permitted clockwise movement independently of arm 33 when rocked during a program of multiplication.
A lever 37 (Figs. 1 and 2) is provided intermediate its ends with a slot extending upwardly from its lower edge where it is pivotally mounted on a stud 38 in the machine side frame. The left end of lever 37 is forked and engages pin d of crank 35, thereby providing a coupling between crank 35, lever 37, and arm 33. A spring 39 urges lever 37 downwardly (Fig. 1) to hold the upper end of the slot in the lever in engagement with mounting stud 38. Also, spring 39 urges lever 37 clockwise to engage a lug at its right end with the upper edge of arm 2% of crank 29. The upper free end of a rearwardly extending arm 35b of crank 35 engages a roller 11a at the upper end of rock arm 11 when the registering mechanism is in full cycle position (Fig. l). A lug at the free end of the third arm 35c of crank 35 is adapted to be engaged by a link 41 during a program of division as hereinafter described. However, normally link 41 is disengaged (Figs. 1 and 2) from arm 35c to permit clockwise movement of crank 35.
Upon depression of stop key 27 during a program of multiplication, its stem will engage arm 29a and rock' crank 29 clockwise (Fig. 2). Arm 2% of crank 29 will urge lever 37 counterclockwise and this will tend to move arm 33 counterclockwise and crank 35 clockwise. If the registering mechanism is at or adjacent mid cycle position, the roller 11a of arm 11 will be removed from engagement with the free end of arm 35b of crank 35 as shown in Fig. 2. Therefore crank 35 will be moved clockwise, arm 33 will be moved counterclockwise, and the upper edge of opening 33a engaging pin 2112 will rock arm 21 clockwise, thereby initiating operation of the stopping means at the end of the current cycle of registration. However, if the registering mechanism is at full cycle position (Fig. l) or definitely removed from mid cycle position, the free end of arm 3512 will be engaged by roller 11a. Therefore crank 35 will be blocked from clockwise movement and arm 33 connected therewith will be locked against counterclockwise movement to rock arm 21. In this event,'upon depression of stop key 27, spring 39 will yield and the slotted mounting of lever 37 will permit said lever to be rocked counterclockwise about pin 35d on arm 35:: of crank 35. In normal operation before the operator will have time to release stop key 27, the registering mechanism will approach mid cycle position and roller 11a will be removed from engagement with the free end of arm 35b, thereby permitting clockwise movement of crank 35. Spring 39 wil1 now move lever 37 downwardly and counterclockwise about its mounting on stud 33, thereby rocking crank 35 clockwise and arm 33 counterclockwise to initiate operation of the stopping means at the end of the current cycle of registration. If provision were not made to disable the devices to trip the stopping means when the registering mechanism is at full cycle position, the stopping means would be tripped upon depression of the stop key with the machine at rest. Subsequent operation of a key to initiate a registering operation would therefore result in an unwanted operation of the stopping means instead of the registering operation.
Divide key 43 (Figs. 1 and 1A) is held in retracted or in depressed position by a lever 45. The stem of divide key 43 is provided with a pair of spaced lugs at the rear and the'right arm of lever 45 is positioned therebetween. The ends of a toggle spring 47 are attached to the right end of lever 45 and to a fixed pin respectively. Thus, lever 45 is normally biased counterclockwise (Fig.
1A) to hold divide key 43 in raised position. However,
when the divide key is depressed, lever 45 will be rocked clockwise thereby and the lever will then be biased clockwise by spring 47 to hold key 43 in depressed position.
Upon depression of divide key 43, a link 49 will be moved forward from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to engage a pin 49a with a latch 51 thereby releasing said latch. Upon release of latch 51, arm 41 will be spring moved forwardly from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to initiate the program of division. Upon forward movement of arm 41, its upper edge will be brought into engagement with the lug at the end of arm 35c of crank 35 to block said crank from clockwise movement.
Stop key 27 is positioned to the left (Fig. 1A) of divide key 43. The stem of stop key 27 is provided with a lug which extends to the rear and to a position above the left arm of lever 45. Therefore, when lever45 is rocked upon depression of divide key 43, the left arm of lever 45 will be raised to a position immediately adjacent the lug at the rear of the stop key. Accordingly, upon depression of the stop key, the lug thereon will contact and rock lever 45 counterclockwise to restore divide key 43. However, as crank 35 is blocked from clockwise movement by arm 41, which will not be restored until completion of the division program, depression of stop key 27 will be ineffective to rock arm 33 to initiate operation of the stopping means at the end of the current cycle of registration but will cause lever 37 to yield. Therefore, the stopping means will be operated only upon completion of the registration of the current quotient digit as heretofore described.
The devices of the invention have been disclosed in conjunction with the control of registration stopping means in a particular type of machine. It is obvious, hov ever, that the principles of the invention may be equally adaptable to other types of machines. The invention therefore is to be restricted only as necessitated by the spirit of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a motor driven calculating machine including means for initiating and means for terminating operation of the machine; the combination with means adjustable to control the machine to perform a calculation comprising a program of operations; of a stop key, a device operable upon operation of said stop key to initiate operation of said terminating means, and a member rendered effective by said machine control means upon adjustment to controlling position to disable said device.
2. In a motor driven calculating machine including cyclically operable mechanism, and full cycle stopping means for said mechanism; the combination of a device operable to initiate operation of said stopping means including a stop key, and a member rendered effective upon movement of said mechanism to full cycle position to disable said device.
3. In a motor driven calculating machine including cyclically operable mechanism, and full cycle stopping means for said mechanism; the combination with means adjustable to control the machine to perform a calculation comprising a program of operations; of a stop key, a device operable upon operation of said stop key to initiate operation of said stopping means, and a member rendered effective by said machine control means upon adjustment to controlling position and/or upon movement of said mechanism to full cycle position to disable said device.
4. In a motor driven calculating machine including means for initiating and means for terminating operation of the machine; the combination with means adjustable to control operation of the machine; of a stop key, a device including yieldable means for initiating operation of said terminating means upon operation of said stop key and a member controlled by said machine control means upon adjustment to controlling position for blocking operative movement of said device.
5. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, means for initiating operation of said registering means, and full cycle stopping means for said registering means; the combination with means adjustable to control the machine to perform a calculation involving plural operation of said registering means including a stop key operable to cause said step ping means to terminate the registering operations at the conclusion of a predetermined number of cycles of said registering means; of a device operable upon operation of said stop key to initiate operation of said stopping means, and a member rendered efiective by said machine control means upon adjustment to controlling position to disable said device.
6. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, means for initiating operation of said registering means, and full cycle stopping means for said registering means; the combination of a device operable to initiate operation of said stopping means including a stop key, and a member rendered effective upon movement of said registering means to full cycle position to disable said device.
7. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, means for initiating operation of said registering means, and full cycle stopping means for said registering means; the combination with means adjustable to control the machine to perform a calculation involving plural operation of said registering means including a stop key operable to cause said stopping means to terminate the registering operations at the conclusion of a predetermined number of cycles of said registering means; of a device operable upon operation of said stop key to initiate operation of said stopping means, means rendered effective by said machine control means upon adjustment to controlling position to disable said device, and means rendered eflective upon movement of said registering means to full cycle position to disable said device.
8. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, means for initiating operation of said registering means, and full cycle stopping means for said registering means; the combination with means adjustable to control the machine to perform a calculation involving plural operation of said registering means including a stop key operable to cause said stopping means to terminate the registering operations at the conclusion of a predetermined number of cycles of said registering means; of a device operable upon operation of said stop key to initiate operation of said stopping means, and a member rendered eifective by said machine control means upon movement to controlling position or upon movement of said registering means to full cycle position to disable said device.
9. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, means for initiating operation of said registering means, and full cycle stopping means for said registering means; the combination with means adjustable to control the machine to perform a calculation involving plural operation of said registering means including a stop key operable to cause said stopping means to terminate the registering operations at the conclusion or" a predetermined number of cycles of said registering means; of a device operable upon operation of said stop key to initiate operation of said stopping means including a yieldable transmission member, and a locking member rendered effective by said machine control means upon adjustment to controlling position to prevent said device from operative movement; said yieldable member permitting operation of said stop key.
10. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, means for initiating operation of said registering means, and full cycle stopping means for said registering means; the combination with means adjustable to control the machine to perform a calculation involving plural operation of said registering means including a stop key operable to cause said stopping means to terminate the registering operations at the conclusion of a predetermined number of cycles of said registering means; of a device operable upon operation of said stop key to initiate operation of said stopping means including a yieldable transmission member, a locking member connected to said device for movement therewith, and means adjusted to position by said machine control means upon adjustment to controlling position to block movement of said locking member thereby preventing operative movement of said device; said yieldable member permitting operation of said stop key.
11. In a motor driven calculating machine having cyclically operable registering means, means for initiating operation of said registering means, and full cycle stopping means for said registering means; the combination with means adjustable to control the machine to perform a calculation involving plural operation of said registering means including a stop key operable to cause said stopping means to terminate the registering operations at the conclusion of a predetermined number of cycles of said registering means; of a device operable upon operation of said stop key to initiate operation of said stopping means including a yieldable transmission member and a locking member rendered effective by said machine control means upon adjustment to controlling position and/or upon movement of said registering means to full cycle position to prevent said device from operative movement.
