PH.GASE.
HARNESS PAD,
Patented May 2, 1882i N. persas. Pnuwmnngmpmr, wnmngaan, no
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP H. OASE, OF ALEXANDRIA, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT J. MCNEIL, OF SAME PLAGE.
HARNESS-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,209, dated May 2, 1882.
Application illed February 11i, 1882. (No model.) Y
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILlP H. OASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Douglas and State ot' Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Harness-Pad, of which the following is a specieation.
My invention relates to improvements in harness-pads by the use ofa combination burrplate composed of metal and lea-ther 5 and the objects of my improvements are, first, to form a stift' center to the pad over the backbone of the draft-animal; second, to make the pad selt adjustable to the form ofany animal upon which it may he used, thereby avoiding chating or galling the animal and equalzing the bearing ot' the pad upon the animals back upon each side of the backbone. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a lateral view ofthe entire pad, and Fig. 2 a bottom view of the burr-plate.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the two views.
Sections a and b ot' Fig. l represent whatis called the back band, and is composed of two pieces of leather stitched together. Section c is a housing` attached to the backband a b, and, heilig somewhat broader than the backband, projects beyond it.
Sections d and e compose the burr or nut plate, of which section d is ot' leather and e of metal, secured together by rivets or bolts, (shown at each end lot' the metal plate e by lettersjj.) fdenotes the outline of the cushion. It is firmly secured to the leather plate d, andv is stuffed with hair or other soft and suitable material.
The cushion is of leather. The burrs or nuts i i i are firmly fixed in the leather plated, to re.- ceive the pad-screws h 7i and the terret-screws g g. These screws pass through the several sections of the pad and hold them tirmly together.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent In a harness-pad, theburr or nut plate composed of the upper leather section, d, provided with the burrs or nuts i, and the metall plate e,
riveted to the under surface ofthe leather section, all substantially as and for the purpose stated.
PHILIP H. OASE.
