W. 0. MILLER.
& Harness Tree. No. 242,552. 7 Patented lune 7, 1881';
UNHED STATES PATENT OFFIC WILLIAM O. MILLER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
HARNESS-TREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,552, da.ted June 7, 1881.
Application filed August 12, 1880. (N0 model.)
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VILLIAM 0. MILLER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Harness-Trees, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of harness-pads which are flexible in contradistinction to those which are provided with a rigid tree.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts, and in their combinations, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure .l is a vertical central longitudinal section through the center of the complete pad. Fig. 2 is a perspective ofone of my metallic padplates. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the check-hook and plate. Fig. 4c is a similar view of a modification when it is desired to use a detachable hook or post with which to engage the check-rein.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a reinhook plate, with a hook, a, cast with or rigidly secured thereto, or a hole, I), to admit securin g thereto a detachable hook or post, and also provided with a loop, 0, through which the crapper-strap passes. These plates are cast with a loop, (I, on each side of the body.
B is a metallic pad-plate, shown in Fig. 2, consisting of two vertical sides, 6, two end bars, ff, 011 top of the sides, (the latter being provided with an eye, g, or car, through which there is a hole, h,) and with two pairs ofcrossbars, 1', and a single bar, It, at the bottom.
0 is aharness-pad, oI the usual construction, as attached to a rigid metallic tree, and provided with burrs l, lfltO which to screw the terrets m. They are aso provided with other burrs, a a, into which to screw the screwsr s, which secure the body of the pad to the flexible tree, which I will describe.
Two leather straps, D, (onefor each side of the tree,) are employed, with two pad-plates, B.
through the rings orloops E and folded under and back upon themselves underneath the bars f. Screws 7' are then passed through the folded inner ends, downward between the upper pairs of bars 13 i into the body of the pad 0, and engaged with the burrs n. Then the screws 8 are inserted through the holes h in the ears g of the bars f, through the folded outer -ends of the straps, and engaged with the burrs a in the body of the pad. The terrets m are then passed through the straps, between the lower pairs of bars 1' i, and engaged with the burrs l in the body of the pad. The shaft or belly band of the harness is secured, in the usual way, to the rings or loops E.
I am aware that a harness-pad eonsistin g of the check-hook plate A, having side loops, d, pad-plate B, and straps l) passing through said loops and returnedoverthe harm, in combination with the body 0 of the pad, secured thereto by the screws 8 passing through hole h in the pad-plate, and screws 1' passing through the returned end of the strapD and engaging with the burrs n n, has heretofore been employed, and I therefore lay no claim to such invention.
\Vhat I claim as my invention ,is--
1. In a flexible harness-tree, the pad-plate B, provided with the bars ff, i, and 7., substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the pad-plate B, provided with the bars f f, i, and 7c, of the checkhook plate A, provided with side loops, d, and straps D, substantially as described.
VM. 0. MILLER.
