A. SGHWEHR.
MACHINE FOR MAKING HOES. No. 257,082. Patented Apr.25, 1882.
WITNESSES Wmvw ATTORNEYS I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT SGHWEHR, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR MAKING HOES.
. SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 257,082, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed November 26,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, ALBERT Sonwnnn, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio,
have invented a new and valuable Improve-' part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Figs. 3 and 4: are detail views.
This invention has relation to dies for manufacturing hoes; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the bed or base of the press, on which is seated the lower die, B.
C 0 indicate uprights or side bearings,-in which is journaled the rotary shaft D, which may be operated by hand or by power. This shaft should be provided with a-fly-wheel, E.
F represents the follower or pressure block, which carries the upper die, G, which is secured to its lower face by means of screws, bolts, or other common fastening devices. Guides H are provided in connection with the uprights C to keep the follower true in its reciprocatin g movement. The follower is raised and depressed by means of the eccentrics K on the shaft D and 'pitman I, connecting the eccentrics to the follower, as indicated in the drawings.
In the lower die, B, the face of which is inclined or beveled, as indicated at a, is formed a rounded recess, 12, having a beveled or inclined side wall, a, said recess having the contour of the exterior of the eye of the hoe or other tool which is to be welded and thereby formed therein.
Through the follower and the upper die, G, is made a perforation, way, or bearing, 61, in which reciprocates a plunger, L, the lower end of which corresponds in its rounded and beveled form to the recess b, into which it is designed to descend. This welding and forming end 0 of the plunger is made smaller in size than the recess to provide for the thickness of the eye-band, so that when the plunger is down the space around it within the recesswall will be equal in size and form to the eye. The plunger is operated by means of a central eccentric, N, on the shaft D, and a pitman, P, connecting said eccentric to the plunger. A reciprocating movement is designed to be given to the plunger in its bearing d, and this movement should have a certain relation to that of the follower, this being effected by arranging the eccentric N at the proper angular distance from the eccentrics K from the axis of the operating-shaft to raise the plunger to its highest position within the upper die, and
so that its lower extremity will be about flush with the face of said die at the same time that said die is raised to its highest position. The stroke of the plunger is therefore greater than that of the die, and the eccentricity of its cam N greater than that of the cams K of the follower. So, also, the angular distance of the cams N and K provides for the descent, first, of the upper die, B, the end 0 of the plunger following in its descent into the recess b of the lower die.
In operating this device hoe-blanks are provided having branches 9, which are, to form the eye. These branches are bent toward each other in round form, as indicated at h, and heatedtto a welding-heat. The blank is then placed on the lower die with the branches in the recess, and the plunger, descending, welds them together as the upper die moves down, forming the eye.
I am aware that two perforated dies and a punch operated through the dies, together with power mechanism for operating the punch and one of the dies, is not new; and I do not broadly claim said construction.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In a welding-press to form the eyes of hoes or other tools, the combination, with the pressframe having guides H in, its uprights O G, In testimony that I claim the above I have of the lower recessed die, B, the follower F, hereunto subscribed my name in the presence and upper die, G, havinga bearing, b,thr0ugh of two witnesses.
them, the welding and forming plunger L, re- ALBERT SGHWEHR. 5 ciprocating through the follower and upper die, Witnesses:
and the eccentrics K N and pitman I P, sub- MOZART GALLUP,
stantially as and for the purposes specified. PHILIP (J. SOHENKEL.
