This invention relates to a frame and more particularly to a readily assembled frame for framing objects such as pictures, display cards, advertisements, and the like.
In using advertising signs, such 'as in store windows and the like, it has been the practice to'print such signs upon heavy cardboard or other material and stand the sign in the window. Because of the fact that the signs may be of different sizes it has not been the'custom to frame the signs as such practice would require the establishment to maintain a considerable supply of frames of different sizes on hand in order to accommodate the signs; Furthermore, frames of wood or metal construction are expensive, are subject to breakage and on the whole are generally too expensive for everyday use.
I have invented a frame construction which is extremely economical to manufacture and which may be made up as part of the display sign and then folded about the sign to provide a handsome mitered frame which sets off the display sign to its full advantage.
It has often been difiicult and expensive to procure frames for snapshots, for picture postcards worthy of hanging or display, and for other items of a similar nature. The frame constructure of this invention may be readily assembled to provide a frame for such items and as a matter of fact may be made up as part of the original card or photograph and folded therearound as hereinafter described to provide a frame for the photograph or card, if such frame be desired. The addition of a frame according to this invention adds very little to the cost of fabrication of the card or photograph and yet provides an item which may be attractively and easily framed at little or no additional expense.
6 Claims. (Cl. 40-154) These and other advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and drawings in which:

Secured to each edge of the base piece is a rectangular strip of bendable material. ,Two of such' strips 3I-32 are shown, it being understood that a third and a fourth strip are provided along the third and fourth edges of the base piece. Each strip is provided with a first horizontal score line 34 parallel to the adjacent edge of the base piece and a second horizontal score line 35 parallel to the first score line and adjacent the inner edge 36 of each strip. Secured to the inner edge 36 is a strip 31 of reinforcing material provided with aplurality of tongues 38 adapted to fit in slots 39 formed in the base piece.
The strip 3| is provided with a mitered end 4|! in order to provide a nicely mitered corner when the strip 3| is folded over the strip 32. In arranging the mitered ends it is possible either to provide one mitered end on each of the four strips about the base piece, or, as preferred, to provide a pair of oppositely facing strips'with a miter at each end while leaving the ends of the other pair of oppositely facing strips straight as shown on strip 32.
To form the frame about the base piece each strip is folded inwardly as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the strip folding along the score lines 34 and 35 to the point where the tongues 38,- may be inserted into the slots 39. When this has been done the frame has the appearance shown in Figs. 1 and 6. I
A somewhat modified form of the invention is, shown in Figs. 7 to 12, inclusive. In this form, the base piece is also shown as rectangular; in. shape although it is clear that in any of the forms of the invention the base piece may have as mamsides as desired, Strips of bendable material. are attached to each edge of the base piece, two of such, strips, 5.]; and 52 being shown in the drawings. In this particular embodiment the stripsareiintegrally. connected, to. the, base piece. Each strip is provided witha firstscore, line 53- parallel. tp..th e.adjp ining edge of the-base piece, a second more line 54, adjacent the, inner edge; portion, 55 of the strip, and a third score line intermediate the, first. and second score lines. A fastening strip 51 is secured along each edge of the base. a
piece, eac fastening stripbeing so secured that its inner edge 58 is free of the base piece to provide a. slot. 58. therebetween into which the edge portion 55 may be inserted whenthe side strips are. folded. As in the previous embodiment, the strip 51 is provided with a mitered end 60 to prothree! a mitered, corner as; shown in. Big. '7 when the strip 5.! is. folded. over the strip 5.2. In form.- ing the frame the strip, 52; is first folded along its score, line. with itsinner, edge 55, inserted in. the Slot. 58 and then thestrip 51 is folded along its score, lines and its. edge portion 55. inserted ina. slot 59. The frame so formedihasan upstanding outer side 6|, a face 62, and an upstanding inner side. 63. They card or print to be displayed may be-attachedto the base piece in any manner such as, for example, sliding. its, edges. into the slot 59,. before, inserting the, edge, portions 55. thereinto.
A, specific application of the, frame of this in; vention is shown in Figs. 19. and, 20 in. which a picture post card 10. is. provided with four. intie g rzil.stripsv ll, 12, 1.3 and 14 of bendable ma,- terial along its edges. Each stripisprovidediwith afirst score, line 15. parallel to the ed e. of, the
card and. a second, score line. 16 parallel to. the
first, score. line and P rallel to the. outer edge, 11 of each strip. Eaeh end of the. strips 1.2 and I4 is mitered as shown at 18 while. each. end of. the. strips H and 13 is notched as shown at. 19 to pro..- vide a, double miter. In this. particular example of the invention a portion of the material be tween the score lines 16', and theedges [1 is, adapted to, be secured to. the card. which forms the base piece by gluing. To facilitate this, the ende of, the strips H and 1.3 are. formed. so that. after the strips. 12 and 1,4. have been folded to the. position. shown. in. Fig. 2i) and glued in place, the strips II and 13.,may be folded, so that, the notched end.- IS. extends. under, the miter. 1.8 Thus, they are locked in. position and may be glued in such positionif desired.
The versatility of the frame construction of invention isillustrated. in Figs. 13 to 1 8, i nelusive.
