which are employed to indicate whether a watchman is faithful in visiting at proper intervals of time the different rooms or portions of a building or manufactory, and in which this is indicated by perforating or marking a dial or a strip of paper or other suitable material operated by a time-movement.

The object of my invention is to provide in such a detector a very simple and reliable means whereby the paper will be perforated v or marked whenever the case of the instrument is opened and closed, and thereby to prevent a dishonest watchman from opening the case surreptitiously and marking or perforating the paper to make it appear that he has faithfully made his rounds when he has not done so.

To this end the invention consists essentially in the combination, in awatchmans timedetector, with a drum or carrier having a timemovement, a strip of paper or other suitable material surrounding or facing the same, and a case the body of which is provided with a lock and the lid of which is provided with a hasp, of a perforating or marking device arranged within the body of the case adjacent to the lock, and adapted to be operated by the hasp in opening or closing thelid to perforate or mark the paper.

Theinvention also consists in the novel combination, with the perforating or marking device, ofa spring to which it is fixed, and which retracts it after it is pushed in by the hasp of the lock.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional view of an instrument embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 represents a partly-sectional side view, showing the lock more clearly.

A designates the body of the case of the in strument, and B designates portions of a timemovement which is arranged therein, and may be of any suitable and well-known character.

0 designates a drum or carrier which receives a rotary motion from the movement, and which may rotate in unison with the hourhand. Around the drum or carrier 0, and facing the same, is a strip, a, of paper or analogous material, which may be readily perforated, and which is divided to designate hours or fractions thereof 5 and the drum may be grooved circumferentially under the paperstrip, as seen at b, so that the paper may be readily perforated.

The necessary perforating or marking devices, which are designed to be operated by the watchman by means of keys placed in the roomsor localities which he is expected to visit, may be of any well-known or suitable character; but as they form no part of my invention they are not here shown.

A designates the cover of the case, which is represented as hinged at c, and which may be secured by a lock, D, of any suitable character, of which d designates the hasp, which is fixed to the cover A.

To the plate 0 of the movement B is secured a leaf-spring,f, carrying a perforating or marking device, 9, and on the upper end of the said spring is fixed a lug or nose-piece, h, which projects in the way of the hasp, and is represented as tapered or inclined on its upper and lower sides, while the nose of the hasp is correspondingly tapered or inclined. When the cover is unlocked and raised the nose of the hasp d engages with the nose-piece h, and in passing it forces it inward sufficiently to cause the pin or device 9 to perforate the paper, and when the cover is closed the nose of the hasp again engages with the nose-piece h and forces it inward, thus indicating when the case was opened and when it was closed.

The springfserves to retract the pin or device g at each time it is forced inward, and although the arrangement of the said-pin or device here shown is very desirable, it may be modified, if desired, or adapted to perforatea dial, it being arranged in the body ofthe case adjacent to the lock.
