PEN AND PENCIL BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed February 28, 1917. Serial No. 151,534.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BOGUMIL BUKowsKI, a subject Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen and Pencil Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencil boxes of the kind which are commonly known as scholars companions.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of boxes of this description the contents of which will be inaccessible to others than the person who knows the proper manner of opening the box. 1
A second important object of the invention is to provide with a simple and efficient permutation lock.
A third important object is to provide an improved box of this description wherein the lid will have both pivotal and sliding movement,-the lid being locked against pivotal movement when slid in one direction and the pivot, together with certain other parts serving as one of the locking elements to prevent sliding of the lid in the opposite direction into position to swing around the pivot. With the above and other objects in view, as Will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like charactors of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and s Figure 1 is a perspective view of'a pencil box constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal median section therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the lid of the box in position for swinging movement.
Fig. 5 is a section on the Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a section similar to Fig. 3 but showing the permutation means in its locked position.
line 5-5 of of the Czar of Russia, residing at a box of this description shafts 17 and 18 Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the pivot end of the lid.
In carrying out the objects of this invention and in the embodiment herein illustrated there is provided a box having a body or receptacle portion 10 and at one end of this box is a spur 11 wherefrom extends a pivot pin 12, preferably in the form of an ordinary wood screw. The opposite end of this box has a dove tail shaped projection 13 at its upper edge which is received in a dove tail recess 1a in the top 15 when the top is slid in one direction. The other end of the top 15 is providedwith an elongated slot 16 wherein the pivot pin 12 is received and it will be observed that when the projection 13 is received in the recess 14 no swinging movement of the lid can be effected but it is necessary to slide the lid into the position shown in Fig. 1 before it can be swung; Passing through the lid adjacent the slot 16 is a hollow shaft or spindle 17 and mounted in this hollow shaft or spindle is a second shaft 18 the ends of which proj ect above and below the ends of the hollow shaft or spindle 17. In order to cover the head of the screw 12 there is provided in the top of the box a transverse slide 19 and on this slide and the adjacent portions of the box is formed a dial 20 which is, in the present instance, shown as a clock dial so that hands 21 similar to clock hands and which are fixed on the shafts 17 and 18 respectively may revolve over this dial as do the ordinary hands of a clock. On the lower ends of these are provided disks 22 which revolve partly over the slot 16 and each of these disks has a radially disposed peripheral notch 23 which can be brought, by the revolution of the respective disk, into registry with the slot 16, the notches 23 being of sufficient size to accommodate the upper end of the pivot pin 12.
Now, it will be observed that when the hands 21 are set to the proper hours these notches 23 will registerwith each other and with the slot 16 so that when in this position the lid 15 may be slid longitudinally since the upper end of the pivot pin 12 can pass into said notches 23. When the lid is slid longitudinally in this manner as in Fig. 4:, it may then be swung on the pivot pin so as to afford access to the contents of the box. If, however, the lid be placed in the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the projection 13 enters the notch 14 and the disks be revolved so that the notches 23 are out of registry with the slot 16 then the pivot pin 12 will be held in the end of the slot 16 re mote from the recess 14: so that the lid can not be slid to the position shown in Fig. 4 and consequently can not be rotated. It will be obvious that different boxes will have different settings of the hands 21 so that the purchaser of one box may, for instance open the lid when the hands indicate 10 minutes to 2 while another box may indicate 3 :25 or some other hour. Thus a very large number of permutations may be effected render ing it practically impossible for one child to obtain access to the contents of a box belonging to another child.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In a box of the class described, a hollow body having its top fully open, a spur block secured in said body at one end thereof, a pivot pin arranged centrally in and extending vertically from the top of said spur look, a cover for said body having a longitudinally extending slot at one end to slidably receive the pivot pin to permit said cover to be moved into open and closed position relative to the body, a hollow shaft secured through said cover adjacent the inner end of the slot, a second shaft arranged vertically through the hollow shaft, an indicator secured to the upper end of the second shaft, a dial arranged on the cover over which said indicating hand moves, a notched disk secured to the lower end of each shaft and movable into and out of registration with the pivot pin, disk holding the cover in locked or unlocked position for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
