SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,582, dated April 18, 1882.

To all rwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL A. McDoNEL, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State ot' Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had V to the accompanying drawings, which form a brush-head, provided with the usual holes, a,

for the reception ot' the handle. In the straight edge ot' the head I form a channel, B, lengthwise of the head, and at the bottom of this channel I out the saw-kerf b. t

In the building up of the brush, the head having been preparadas above described, I Y

then nailed as in the ordinary manner.

In brush-heads not provided with the sawkerf at the base of the channel the sides of the head often break oli' or split when; being nailed; but in this construction the saw-kerf admits of a compression of the head, the spring being from the base ot' the kerf to the edge ot' the head, allowing the channel to conform to the butt ofthe brush without danger ot' splitting, and the butts of the bristles being larger at that point, and being additionally held by the pitch, prevents their being pulled out.

What I claim as my invention is- A brush wherein the head is provided with a saw-hert' at the base of the channel which contains the bristles, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
