For one thing, the contents of both pails must bespilled or dumped to empty either of them. Further, the fixed joinder of the pails makes it necessary to use the device in its entirety at all times, whether two pails. are needed for a particular operation or not, and,. of course, a leak or. other damage to one pail ends the useful life of the entire device.

The device of the present invention comprises acarrying element with-which a pair of pails may b'e'associ'ated for joi-nt'carryin'g. According to'the present invention, the-pails are placed in secure carrying relation withrespect to the holder by an extremely simple manipulation, and the arrangement is such that, without the employment of any movable parts, the pails are in such relation With respect to the holder or carrier that their own weight automatically secures them against accidental release therefrom during use of the holder or carrier. The center of gravity of a pail relative to the pail holding parts is such that the weight of a pail urges it into more intimate holding engagement with the holding parts.

In an alternative form of the invention the carrier or holder forms a unitary part of one pail with means for readily attaching another pail thereto in the same fundamental manner as in the case of the holder which detachably receives two pails. In this form of the invention the pails may also be used separately if desired, and the dumping of their contents individually is provided for.

While several specific embodiments of the present invention are illustrated in the accompany ing drawings and described in detail in the follow- 2 i-ng specification, it is to be understood that those forms" are set forth by way of example only and that the principles of the present invention are limited only as defined in the appended claims.

In this form of the invention a carryinghandle. it; is connected at its opposite ends to the upper endsof wall: portions [2' and I3 asa-t l5.and1 L5,, respectively.

As appears best in Figs. 3 and 4, wall portion I2 is formed at its opposite sides near the top of the device with inturned flanges which form downwardly extending ears l8. Wall portion 13 is similarly formed with a pair of downwardly directed ears l9.

To assemble pail 2G with the holding and carrying device it is merely necessary to tip it very slightly and insert its rim under a pair of ears l8 and [9 at one side of the holder, then move the pail to a vertical position where its bottom edge rests upon bottom portion ll of the holder as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The center of gravity of the pail 2D and its contents is such as to urge the bottom of the pail toward the holder and into firmer seating engagement on bottom portion l l. Pail 2| is associated with the holder at its opposite side in a similar manner.

It will be noted that the edges of wall portions l2 and I3 converge upwardly to complement the taper of the side walls of pails 20 and 2!. Wall portions I 2 and 13 may be reinforced by means of beads 23 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

In the modified form of the present invention illustrated in Fig. the essential construction and mode of operation is the same as previously described but the stamping is so formed as to comprise a complete, unitary and rigid holder, including the handle portion. In this embodiment the medial portion of the stamping blank has its side edges curved upwardly to form a comfortable an convenient handle 26 From opposite sides of handle 26 the stamping extends downwardly to form

21 and 29 and the ends of the stamping are bent toward each other to form a continuous bottom. The lower end of side wall 28 forms a bottom 29 and the lower end of side wall 21 provides a flange 36 which overlaps bottom 29 and may be rigidly secured thereto as by spotwelding or the like.

Ears 3! and 32 in Fig. 5 are identical with those previously described and the manner in which the holder and carrier of this embodiment is used is identical with that previously described and one of the supported pails is designated 33 in Fig. 5.

In the further modified form of the present invention illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the holder, designated generally 34, is permanently associated with one pail, designated 35, and is detachably associated with another pail, designated 36. To this end a pair of spaced

39 and 40, see Fig. 8, for spotwelding or other permanent securement to the outside wall of pail 35 as indicated at 4| in Fig. 6.

As in the embodiment of Fig. 5, side walls 3'! and 38 extend downwardly from an integral handle formation 42 and side wall 31 is bent inwardly to form a bottom wall 43, side wall 38 being provided with an overlapping securing flange 44 which may be spotwelded to bottom wall 43 as indicated at 45 in Fig. I.

In this embodiment each side wall is provided with a single downwardly extending ear 48 for engagement over the rim of pail 36. A further variation in this form of the present invention appears in Fig. 6 where the edge of bottom 44 is upturned as at 48 to engage under the bottom rim of pail 36. While not essential, this upturned 'flange may be incorporated in the previously described holders if desired.

The holders of the present invention may be used in multiples to carry more than two pails. This use is of particular advantage in farming and the like where a number of buckets of feed may be carried. One convenient arrangement comprises a lineal row of four pails with three holders, one between each adjacent pair of pails, the middle holder being used for the actual carrymg.

What is claimed is:

1. Means for carrying a pair of pails comprising a pair of spaced generally parallel side wall portions and a flat connecting base portion integral therewith, each wall portion having outward and downward extensions at opposite sides thereof adjacent its upper portion, whereby a pail may be quickly and detachably associated with each side of said carrying means by inserting the upper rim of the pail behind the downward extensions at one side of the two wall portions and then moving the bottom of the pail toward the wall portions to seat a portion thereof on the flat base portion, and a carrying handle associated with said wall portions adjacent their upper ends.

2. Means for carrying a pair of pails comprising a pair of spaced generally parallel side wall portions and a flat connecting base portion integral therewith, each wall portion having outward and downward extensions at opposite sides thereof adjacent its upper portion, whereby a pail may be quickly and detachably associated with each side of said carrying means by inserting the upper rim of the pail behind the downward extensions at one side of the two wall portions and then moving the bottom of the pail toward the wall portions to seat a portion thereof on the flat base portion, the edges of said side Wall portions being slanted to approximately complement the taper of the sides of the pails, and a carrying handle associated with said wall portions adjacent their upper ends.
