1 Claim. l
My invention relates to a tray and more particularly to a serving tray adapted to be supported on the arm of a chair or the like.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a serving tray equipped with means for detachably securing the tray to the arm of a chair or the like and which means is replaceable by other means for securing the tray to a different arm with respect to contour, size and style.
` Another object of my invention is to provide L." a tray of the foregoing described character which is simple in construction, durable and eiiicient in use, economical in manufacture and which may be readily appliedto and utilized in conjunction with chairs having arms of `different contours, styles and sizes.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings from which the several features of the` invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the arm of a chair having my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged bottom plan view of the tray assembly.
Figure Sis a transverse sectional view4 taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is an elevation of the tray assembly provided with aimodirled bracket for securing the tray to the arm of a chair of a style or contour different from that disclosed in Figure l.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 illustrating another modified bracket.
In practicing my invention, as illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 of the drawing, I provide a tray assembly comprising a tray 5 of a suitable size for use on the arm 6 of a chair or the like. The bottom face of the tray 5 is provided with a strap 1 having an intermediate section 8 outwardly offset from the tray to provide a pocket therebetween. One end section I0 of the strap is fixed to the tray in a suitable manner, for example, by a suitable adhesive W when the tray and strap are constructed of plastic, or by welding when the components are of metal. The opposite end section I I, which normally engagesthe bottom surface of the tray, is free and adapted to be (Cl. S11-17) forced outwardly from the tray to permit insertion of the central portion I2 of a bracket I3 into the pocket to thus detachably secure the bracket I3 to the`V tray 5. The portion I2 is provided, on each side of the strap 'I, with pips or detents I4 coacting with the strap i' to preclude lateral displacement of the bracket I3 with re spect to the strap 'I. The bracket I3' comprises legs I5 connected together by the central portion I2 and which legs are so shaped as to iirmly embrace the chair arm 6, as shown in Figure l, and thereby secure the tray 5 to the arm for use for accommodating thereon various articles, for instance, trays, glasses, etc. The legs I5, while relatively stiff, are possessed of suicient resiliency to permit ready attachment to and detachment from the arm of the chair or the like.
AS illustrated in Figure 5, the bracket 2B is of a different shape with respect to the bracket I3 to secure the tray 2| to the particular style of chair arm disclosed at 22. A bracket 25 of another shape is disclosed in Figure 6 for securing the. tray 26 to the type of arm depicted at 21.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that any of the brackets may be readily removed from the tray for replacement by a bracket of a suitable size and shape for fitting a particular type of chair arm or the like. Furthermore, it is to be understood that the tray assembly or the Various components thereof may be constructed of any suitable material, for instance, metal or plastic, and that the brackets may be constructed of various sizes and shapes to lit various styles, sizes and contours of chair arms and the like.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and subcombinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not conned solely to the use herein disclosed in connection therewith as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles involved which are capable of extended application in various forms, and the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In a tray assembly, a tray, a bracket, a strap disposed over the bottom face of said tray and having an intermediate section offset from said face to form a pocket therebetween receiving said bracket, said strap having end sections disposed on the sides of said intermediate section, respectively, with one of said end sections being fixed to said face and the other end section being free for movement away from said face to permit said bracket to be inserted within and removed from said pocket, said bracket being of a shape to secure said tray to the arm of a chair or the like of an established contour and being replaceable with another bracket of a dierent shape to conform to an arm of a different contour, said bracket being provided adjacent said strap with means coacting with said strap to preclude lateral shifting of said bracket.
