1 Claim.
This invention relates to an automatic oiling device for pipe threading or working tools, the primary object of the invention being to provide means whereby the necessary quantity of oil for lubricating the blades of a thread cutting tool, will be delivered to the tool with each ratchet operation of the tool during threading.
An important object of the invention is to provide an oil releasing means which will be operated during the usual operation of the tool in cutting threads, and without any additional effort on the part of the operator.
Still another object of the invention is to feed oil to the cutting blade eliminating the necessity of the person using the cutter, applying oil by the usual oil can method, in which case the operators hands become greasy making it diilicult to continue the threading or cutting operation without wiping or washing his hands.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction'and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a thread cutting tool equipped with an oil mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a disassembled view of the diaphragm and valve controlling the passage of oil to the threading blades.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the die head, a part thereof being shown in section illustrating the oil passages.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the tool with which my invention is used, in the present showing, is a pipe threading tool and embodies a die head frame 5 within which the die head 6 is mounted, there being provided the usual ratchet construction between the die head frame 5 and die head 6 for rotating the die head to perform its operation, in the usual and well known manner.
As shown, the die head is provided with the extension 1 which is formed with a plurality of spaced longitudinal grooves 8 that have openings 9 at their inner ends, establishing communication between the grooves and the inner surface of the extension.
The die head frame is formed with the usual socket l0 in which the threaded end ll of the handle I2 is secured, the handle l2 providing an oil reservoir for oil to be fed to the dies of the tool to reduce friction, during the cutting operation and maintain the dies cool.
The inner end of the handle I2 presents a shoulder against which the ring [3 engages, the ring providing a seat for the diaphragm l 4 which extremity of the extension i6 is rounded so that it moves over the notches 5! formed in the edges or walls of the grooves. A coiled spring i8 is disposed between the diaphragm l t and annular flange H! of the valve whereby the valve is normally held in its closed position, but so arranged that it may move inwardly against the tension of the spring i8, as the rounded end of the extension !6 moves out of a groove 8, opening the valve to permit a small quantity of oil to pass into the grooves of the die head, from where the oil passes through the openings 9 to be delivered to the threads being cut. A plug 20 which is threaded in the outer end of the handle I2, closes the outer end of the handle or reservoir.
It will of course be understood that the attachment does not in any Way affect the operation of the usual ratchet structure of the tool, and the tool is operated in the usual and well known manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
In a pipe threading tool, a ratchet die head, an extension on the die head, said extension having longitudinally disposed grooves formed in the outer surface thereof, said grooves being arranged in parallel spaced relation with respect to each other, said grooves having openings formed in the inner ends thereof, the openings extending through the die head admitting oil to the interior of the die head from said grooves, a hollow handle fitted on the extension providing an oil reservoir, said handle having a discharge opening communicating with the grooves of the extension through which oil passes from the handle to the grooves, a valve mounted in the handle controlling the passage of oil to the grooves from the handle, a valve stem on the valve adapted to extend into the grooves whereby said valve is seated preventing the passage of oil from said discharge opening, said valve being opened by movement of the valve stem from the grooves as the handle is rotated around the head, releasing oil to said openings.
