Description

Patented Dec. 27, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in nozzles, and more particularly to nozzles for use upon garden hose.
In the present construction of nozzle used upon garden hose, it is necessary for the user to grasp the hose with one hand while eiecting an adjustment of the water stream with the other hand, due to the fact that the stationary base end of the nozzle does not aord the proper hand grip which will permit of the base end of the nozzle to be held stationary during manipulation of the adjusting head. Usually the hose is dirty and touching of the same during adjustment of the nozzle to change the water stream causes the hands of the user to become soiled. It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a hose nozzle in which the base of the nozzle is provided with an elongated spindle body of sufcient length to afford a hand grip for a user, the adjusting head being carried by the outer tip end of the spindle body and being relatively short and stubby so as not to make the nozzle unduly long in length. By such improved construction, it is possible for a user to rmly grasp the spindle body of the nozzle while eiecting an adjustment of the water stream, thus making it unnecessary for a user to shift the hand onto the hose.
Another feature of the invention resides in a hose nozzle having a substantially uninterrupted bore which extends from the base inlet end thereof to a point adjacent the discharge orifice which serves to increase the length and force of the water stream emitted from the discharge orifice.
A further feature of the invention is to provide a hose nozzle which is simple of construction, comfortable to hold in the hand of a user, and which is inexpensive of manufacture so as to be within the price range of the conventional hose nozzle now upon the market.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter described in the following specification, are partic ularly pointed out in the appended claim. and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in

Like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the several forms of the invention to be hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters and more particularly to the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, the numeral .I9 designates my improved hose nozzle in its entirety and which includes a tubular spindle shaped body II having a substantially uninterrupted bore l2 extending lengthwise therethrough. The inlet end of the body I I is provided with a hose connecting base I3, which is internally screw threaded to facilitate the attachment of the nozzle to one end of a hose. The outer end of the body II is reduced in diameter as at I4, and the tip end thereof is provided with an integral valve member I5 which is in the shape of a collar button. The valve member I5 is disposed in axial alinement with the axis of the body II for a purpose to be hereinafter appreciated. The tip end of the body II is also provided with opposed radially extending discharge passages I6-I6 which passages open onto the exterior of the reduced extension I4. The extension I4 inwardly of the passages I6 is screw threaded as at Il and seated in a recess I8 at the inner end of the screw threaded portion, is a split ring I9, which ring acts to limit the outward turning movement of the control head-presently to be described. The outer end of the reduced portion I4 of the body I I is beveled as at 20 to provide a seat to receive the control head when the same is moved to a fully closed position.
Carried by the reduced extension I4 of the spindle body I l is a thimble shaped control head 2|, the outer closed end of which is provided with a flared discharge orice 22, the said oriiice being disposed in alinement with the axis of the spindle body II. The orifice 22 is of a size to permit of the passage of the valve member I5 therethrough and the said valve member coacts with the walls of the orifice to regulate the stream of water discharged from the nozzle. The control member 2I is internally screw threaded as at 23 for threading engagement with the thread Il on the reduced extension I 4. The open end of the member ZI is internally screw threaded for threadedly receiving a packing nut 24 and which nut serves to compress a packing ring Z5 for sealing the joint between the control head 2| and the reduced portion I4 of the spindle body I I.
By reason of the relative length of the control head 2| and the spindle body II, it will be seen that the exterior of this spindle body II is of a suicient length to provide a hand grip for a user of the nozzle, and in order to facilitate rm CJI diameter.

In practice, the threaded base I3 is attached to the outlet end of a hose and the water from the hose enters the bore I2 and is free to pass to the discharge passages I6 from where the water enters the restricted space between the control head 2| and the tip end of the spindle body, and thence it passes through the restricted discharge orice 22, the said orice being regulated as to size by reason of the valve |5. The operator may firmly grasp the nozzle at the knurled portion 26 with one hand and with the lingers of the other hand, he may manipulate the control head 2| to turn the same in order to regulate the stream of water passing through the discharge orice 22. In order to provide suicient friction surface on the interior of the control head 2|, the said head is provided with a knurled portion 2l'. When the control head 2| is moved to the limit of its inward movement as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, the end wall of the said control head seats against the beveled surfaces on the tip end of the spindle body i Outward movement of the control head 2| is limited by engagement of the gasket engaging the ring i9.
In Figures 4 and 5 of the drawing, a slightly modified construction has been shown, and wherein the numeral 35| designates a tapered spindle body having a tapered bore 3| extending therethrough.4 The wide end of the body is provided with a hose attaching base 32, whereas the opposite end is of a substantially uniform The exterior of the outer tip end of the body is screw threaded as at 33, while opposite sides of the bore 3| inwardly of the tip end are provided with channels 34. The walls of the bore 3| at the tip end are internally screw threaded as at for threadedly receiving the exteriorly screw threaded body 3,5 of a valve member 31. The inner end of the body 3E is provided with a kerf 38 to facilitate threading of the valve member 3l into and out of the tip end of the body member 3D. Opposite sides of the threaded body 36 of the valve member 3'! areflat as at 38 and are disposed in alinement with the channels 34 to provide outlet passages 39 which communicate with the bore 3| and with the tip end of the spindle body 3i). A ring 40 is seated inwardly of the threaded portion 33 for the same purpose as that shown in Figure 2 and previously explained.
Threaded tothe tip end of the body 3|) is the control head 2| and which is identical in construction to that shown in Figure 2, The parts function in the same manner as previously explained so that a repetition of the entire operation is not deemed necessary. However, it may be stated that the water enters the nozzle through the enlarged end of the tapered bore 3| and flow uninterrupted to the discharge passages 39 from where it leaves the nozzle through the discharge orice 22 in the control head 2i. In this form or the invention I provide diametrically opposed ribs 4| on the spindle body 35 to act as hand grip portions for a user when grasping the nozzle during use. The ribs or wings 4| are the equivalent to the knurled portion 26 hereinbefore mentioned.
In'Figures 6 and '7 of the drawing, a slightly different construction of stuiing box has been shown wherein in lieu of the nut 24 an externally screw threaded ring 42 is threaded to the internally screw threaded portion of the control head 2| for the purpose of maintaining the gasket 25 in position. In view of the fact that the ring 42 is disposed Within the open end of the control head 2|, Spanner openings 43 are provided in the outer sides of the ring to enable a spanner wrench to be applied thereto during turning of the ring 42 relative to the control head 2|.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a hose nozzle which includes a stationary body member having a suilicient exposed portion to enable rm gripping of the same by the hand of a user, and which permits the nozzle to be held in one hand while using the other handto impart a turning movement to the control head 2| when making an adjustment for regulating a stream of water emitted from the discharge end of the nozzle. These parts are so designed and proportioned as to make the nozzle comfortable to the hands of a user and avoid bulkiness and undue length to the nozzle in its entirety.
While I have shown and described what I consider to be the most practical embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that such changes and alterations as come within the scope of the appended claim may be resorted to if delred.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Aof the United States, isz- A hose nozzle comprising in combination, a relatively long tubular spindle-like body having an enlarged hose attaching base at the inner end thereof and also having a reduced cylindrical outer end provided with a restricted discharge outlet, the intermediate portion of the body between said attaching base and reduced outer end constituting a hand grip, a valve element carried by and extending beyond the tip end of said spindle-like body and disposed axially relative thereto, said reduced end of the body including an external threaded portion adjacent the valve element, a relatively short stream control head, internal threads provided on the reduced end of said spindle-like body and threadedly engaging the external threaded portion on said body and having a ared discharge orifice in the outer end thereof and disposed axially with respect to said spindle-like body, the walls of said discharge orice adapted to coact with said valve element to regulate the stream of water discharged from the nozzle, an annular recess in the exterior of the reduced end of the body at the inner end of the threaded portion thereof, a stop ring seated in said recess, an enlarged internally threaded portion at the inner end of said control head, a shoulder at the inner end of the enlarged internally threaded portion, and a packing gland threaded to the internal threaded portion of the control head and having a working fit on the reduced end of the spindle-like body inwardly of the threaded portion thereof and embodying a packing gasket arranged to constantly abut the inner end of said packing gland and said shoulder and to abut the stop ring when the control head has been turned to the limit of its outward movement, said stop ring operating to compress the gasket when engaged thereby to increase the sealing action of the gasket.
