UNITED STATES PATENT EFICE.
Nic. BoEEN, JE., oF HAUBsTADT, INDIANA.
CUTTER-BAR FOR HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,279, dated April 11, 1882.
Applicationtild September 1, 1881. (No model.)
To all zehom it may concern Be itknown that I, NIe.BoREN, Jr., ofHaubstadt, in the county ot' Gibson and Stateof Indiana., have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Cutter-Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following; is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved cutter-bar for harvesters with theknives or critters in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the knives or cutters detached. Fig. 3 is a detail view ofthe bar, the cutters having' been removed; Fig. 4, a side view ofthe device complete. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to cutter-bars for harvesting-machines; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same,
by which the knives maybe separately and detachably secured, as will be hereinafter more fully` described', and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the cutterbar, which is provided with a longitudinal dovetailed or otherwise suitablyconstructed recess, B, in which is fitted a slide, C, having at one end a. stop, D, and at the other end a threaded projection, E, extending through the end ot' the cutter-bar, and having a nut, F.
The edges of the upper side of the cutterbar are provided with two parallel rows of upward-projecting studs, G G, and the slide C has a similar row of studs, H.
The knives or critters, which are represented by the letter I, are provided on one side with a single deep central recess, J, located between two notches, K K. The other side of the teeth is provided only with a centrally-located notch, L.
In operation the teeth are adjusted, as shown, between the studs G H ofthe cutter-bar A and slide C, the recesses Jin the teeth permitting the latter to be adjusted while the slide C is slid ont. By tightening the nutF the bar and slide are drawn together, thus clamping the teeth and retaining them all securely in position.
By this invention a single tooth may be at any time readily removed from the cutter-bar and a new one substituted, and the construction is siinple, inexpensive, and easily applied to machines now in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States- As an improvement in cutter-bars for har vesters, the combination of the grooved or recessed bar A, having studs G G on both sides of the central longitudinal recess B, the sliding bar C, having stop D, threaded projection E, and studs H, the nut F, and the removable knives or cutters I, having notches K K L, and recesses J formed in one side between the notches K K, as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Nro. BOEEN, JR.
